African Monarchies and Kingdoms of Uganda
By Prof. Emmanuel K. Twesigye, OWU (Written in Response to Yoswa)
23 February, 1995
Yoswa you asked very profound questions about the kingdoms of Uganda, and how President Museveni would have handled their restoration if he taken the Uganda history seriously into consideration, particularly the period between 1950-1989. This is the time when Uganda was undergoing mass nationalism, independence movements and self-redefinition as one nation and not four or more nations based on kingdoms and ethnicity. The questions of kingdoms are more vexing in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, and some parts of Nigeria because these areas have had kingdoms which probably go back into the past millennium. The empire of Ethiopia being a contemporary of Egyptian Empire predated the birth Christ. As such, it predated most of the European empire, such as the famous Roman empire and other kingdoms, including the United Kingdom itself, which emerged much later. There is great emotional investiment and attachment to this kind of African history and institution. Yet, Mengistu Mariam Haille carried out a bloody military coup and unceremoniously swept it aside without thought for the preservation of history, culture, art, religion and ceremonies attached to this long established institution. Therefore, it should be restored for Africa's pride and historical reasons, especially now that Mengistu and his murderous regime are now out of power and on trail for these evils.

Uganda Votes as EC Gets Set for Re-Run
A JOINT REPORT
THE EASTAFRICAN AS UGANDA goes to the polls this Monday to elect its next president, donors, mainly from the European Union, say they will exert immediate pressure after the election to have militant Movement cadres brought under control to avoid a continuation of the violence that marred the campaign. Should incumbent Yoweri Museveni emerge winner, the donors say, they will prevail upon him to reconcile with opposition groups. Voting starts at 7am and results are expected 48 hours after the poll closes at 5pm. But the new president will not be sworn in until May 12. There are a contested 11.6 million voters. Opposition groups, observers and donors believe there are in actuality only about 8.6 million voters out of a population of 21.6 million. European Union donors, who contribute more than $700 million (Ush1.2 trillion) annually to Uganda, were part of a delegation that met President Museveni last week to seek reassurances that his decision to deploy the army, alongside other security agencies, to contain possible election violence would not worsen the situation in which dozens have already been killed. Some EU countries, including Britain, last week warned their citizens in Uganda of possible violence during polling. "In the run-up to the election, there is a risk that crowds may become violent. Avoid political and other crowded situations and stay away from trouble spots," a statement from the British Foreign Office said on March 5.

Six of the riparian countries - the Democratic Republic of Congo (D.R. Congo), Egypt, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda - formed the Technical Co-operation Committee for the Promotion of the Development and Environmental Protection of the Nile Basin (TECCONILE). The other four riparian states participated as observers. Within this framework, the Nile River Basin Action Plan (NRBAP) was prepared with support from CIDA. One of the projects (Project D3), whose objective is to develop a co-operative framework for management of the Nile, was endorsed by all countries during the 3rd meeting of the Nile-COM (Arusha, 9-11 February, 1995)

    Module Nineteen: West Africa
    Teacher's Edition
    PURPOSE
The purpose of Module Nineteen is to introduce students to the region called East Africa. East Africa is a vast area encompassing the countries of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Seychelles, and Comoros. As with other regions of Africa (see Introduction to Module Twenty: Regional Perspectives ), the countries that are included in East Africa can vary somewhat depending on whom you talk to. Some of the countries listed here can also fit into the regions of Central, Southern, or Northern Africa. But for the sake of this module, we will refer to East Africa as the twelve countries listed above. Activity One: The Region Called East Africa gives a brief overview of the history of the region, highlighting human origins, early kingdoms, trade routes, European colonialism, and postcolonial states. In this activity, students should get a sense of the rich history of this region and its connectedness to other regions in Africa and the rest of the world. The activity ends by discussing intra-regional political and economic organizations in East Africa, giving COMESA as one example. Activity Two: The Geography of East Africa deals with some of the geographical differences between East African subregions. The region of East Africa can be further broken down into three subregions—The Horn of Africa (Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Djibouti), the Great Lakes Region (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi), and islands in the Indian Ocean (Seychelles and Comoros). The different vegetations, water availabilities, topographies, and population densities in these regions are discussed. Also, the impact of tourism on the East African enviroment is discussed.

    History
Meanwhile, Museveni took advantage of the chaos in the government to press forward his military campaign, even while signed an accord to participate in a unity government. The NRA entered Kampala in January 1986, and Museveni was soon sworn in as president. Museveni has since enjoyed continual popularity as president, particularly across the south and east of Uganda. Museveni instituted an unusual form of government known as "no-party democracy" that heavily restricts the activities of all political organizations except the NRM (now, simply "The Movement"), to which all citizens nominally belong. The main organs of government are part of a pyramidal system of "Local Councils," comprising five layers at the village, sub-county, county, regional, and national levels. Museveni's scheme of no-party government was approved in public referenda in 1995 and 2000. Museveni himself was directly elected president in 1996 and again in 2001 under the 1995 constitution, which limits a president to 2 five-year terms. Another important political innovation in the 1995 constitution was the statutory mandate of at least one female deputy for each of Uganda's 45 districts; this and similar measures have made Museveni popular with Ugandan women.

WHAT'S NEW Upcoming Events Publications Announcements ... Employment Understanding the History Appreciating the Culture Journal Entry #3 October 27, 2003 I have been learning a lot about Uganda in these past six weeks. I have been reading the local and national papers, socializing with my new Ugandan friends, exploring the country, eating the local food, participating in local practices such as going to the market for food, taking the local transportation, and attending a cultural performance. All of these activities have helped me to adapt to my new environment and to gain a deeper understanding of Uganda's values. This is one of the cultural events I attended, a group of orphans singing and dancing at the source of the Nile. I realized that in order to be effective and satisfied while working and living here, I also needed to also understand Uganda's history to appreciate the culture. Like many African countries, Uganda's history is marked with colonialism, civil war, political unrest, and the emergence of many infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. The British missionaries came to Uganda to convert the spiritual beliefs of the people - which were based on animism, a belief in the power of the natural world - to ones based on Christianity.

Kitchen: PetSTEP II Multi-Purpose Dog/Pet Safety Ramp - It looked like a great Idea, just what I needed to get my older golden in and out of my jeep. Problem is, there is a serious crush hazard because of the weight and design. There is a finger "crush area" near the hinges where a user would most likely grasp the ramp to fold it. I have mashed fingers several times and sustained a moderately serious crushed finger the last time I used it. If I can't make it safe with a saw, then out it goes. It's too dangerous for anyone in my family to use.
Kitchen: Haier BC112G 30-Bottle Capacity Wine Cellar with Contoured Smoked Glass Door - I received the Haier BC112G a couple of weeks ago, perfectly delivered by the freight compagny Amazon uses. I am so far very satisfied by this product: the price is right, its sleek look is a nice addition to my living room, it is pretty quiet (not disturbing at all, although you can hear it of course), it easily accomodates 30 bottles, it has a good height allowing variations of temperature between top to bottom, digital temperature, a basic lock - useful if you have kids, and finally a good warranty. I had made extensive research, this product along with free shipping ranks among the top options for any wine fan. Only potential negative point I could raise is that I am not certain if the smoke glass door protects against UVs - it does according to Haier customer service, but doesn't according to some internet reviewers.
