ITC, in collaboration with the Department of Geography of Makerere University in Uganda, is inviting interested participants for a NUFFIC Refresher Course on:
Geo-informatics for Watershed Management
Developments in the field of geoinformatics as well as development and implementation of modelling routines are going very fast. For most alumni a number of significant changes and developments will have occurred since they have finished their studies in the Netherlands . Recent developments in watershed management, modelling and GIS applications have most likely not reached many of ITC's alumni in developing countries. Especially in the Eastern African region, where research efforts through the Nile Basin Initiative have started to take root, keeping people informed of these developments is very important. The course will help to bring people up to speed with these developments, and it will stimulate them to develop educational and research activities in these fields. The subject matter that is central in the contents of the course has a direct link to the subject of natural disasters and disaster management (for example drought and flood monitoring) that bears great relevance to the Eastern Africa Region. Also for appropriate management of natural hazards and disasters a good understanding of water and watershed management is essential.

New!! Introduction
Geography programmes at Makerere University have multiple linkages across the Art/Science divide. Geography programmes are a perfect embodiment of the Makerere University philosophy of interdisciplinary and open disciplinary boundaries Perhaps no other subject in the University engages with such a wide range of other disciplines in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Environmental Studies. Being one of the foundation "subject groups" of the University, Geography students and staff members have grown rapidly in the last few years after a long period of stasis in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Department of Geography is a balanced and creative blend of established mid-career and young geographers both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is a service department of the Faculties of Science, Social Sciences, Education as well as the Institute of Environmental Science.
Currently, the Department of Geography offers professional programmes such as Environmental Management, Urban Planning, Tourism, Meteorology, on top of other known traditional courses in physical and human Geography. The Department is in the process of developing the Geographical Information Systems (G.I.S.) Unit and has a Departmental Library and a Cartography Unit as support facilities. The Mountain Resource Center of the Department is currently offering short courses in different computer packages. A number of staff members and students, research on more concrete topics such as Climate, Agriculture, Population, Environment, Regional and Urban Planning, Land Use and Resource Assessment among others.

East Africa Travel Guide Basic Geography Great Rift Valley, East Africa By Donovan Pacholl East Africa generally encompasses the countries of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Most of these countries are close to straddling the equator and therefore are home to a huge variety of ecosystems - everything from highlands, deserts, jungles, to open savannas and mountain ranges. East Africa sits in the Great Rift Valley, East Africa, a geographical area that that CUT A THATwas a result of the separation of Africa and Arabia tectonic plates, stretching all the way from Dead Sea near Syria to Mozambique. As a result, many areas are marked by volcanoes, such as Mt. Kilimanjaro or the Crater Highland in Tanzania, or by a lakes high with a high mineral content. These are usually found in Kenya, such as Lake Magadi or Lake Nakuru. Lake Victoria, bordering Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, is the largest lake in Africa, with an area covering more than 70,000 square miles. It's home to an abundant amount of islands, wildlife, fish, and unique people. Lake Victoria is becoming a major transportation hub, and the fastest growing region, for shipping goods and people between Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. Just southeast of Lake Victoria is another geological wonder. Lake Tanganyika, named after the original name of Tanzania, is one of the deepest lakes in the world.
