Geography and Climate Location:
Uganda lies between the two arms of the Great Rift Valley in East Africa. It is crossed by the equator. It lies between latitudes 4 degrees 12" north and 1 degree 29" south and longitudes 29 degrees 5" and 25" east. It is roughly the same in size to Great Britain, Ghana or the state of Oregon in the United States of America. It is bordered by Kenya to the East, Sudan to the North, DRC to the West and Tanzania and Rwanda to the south.
Area:
241,139 sq. km of which 42.000 (17%) sq km is made up of swamps and open fresh water bodies. 30,000 sq km (12%) forest reserves and game parks.
Terrain:
Uganda lies in the Great African Plateau with an average altitude of 1200m (4000ft) above sea level broken by the Great Rift Valley to the Western Side. Elevated areas are the Rwenzori mountains (5000m) with permanent snow cover and Mount Elgon (4300m).
The Nile, the world's second longest river starts its journey from the world's second largest fresh water body, Lake Victoria at Jinja.

Thus the plan is to collect and analyse palaeoenvironmental data from sedimentary basins (papyrus swamps) that lie close to the excavated archaeological sites at Kasunga and Munsa and those at Ntusi and Bigo. This will help to reconstruct the environmental history of the region and thus revel the range of possible causal factors that may have led to the decline of these kingdoms in the great lakes region.     Size: 241,139 square kilometers, including 44,000 square kilometers of open water or swampland. Topography: Mostly plateau that slopes gently toward north, with central downwarp occupied by Lake Kyoga. Mountains on east and west. Highest peak of Mount Stanley is Margherita (5,113 meters). Approximately one-half of Lake Victoria (10,200 square kilometers) lies within Uganda and is source of Nile River. Climate: Equatorial climate, moderated by altitude. Rainfall varies from more than 2,100 millimeters around Lake Victoria to about 500 millimeters in northeast. Vegetation heaviest in south; thins to savanna and dry plains in northeast.     General State of Development
    In 1965 Uganda and South Korea were at about the same point on the developing nation scale, yet today South Korea is a strong, industrial nation, while Uganda is impoverished. The reason for this discrepancy rests clearly with poor post colonization leadership, the tyrant Idi Amin from 71 - 79, and a subsequent civil war. It is only since 1986 that Uganda has had opportunity to move forward again but by then, it had almost been driving back to the 1800s
