Uganda's Four Kingdoms: A Troubled Nation's Culture Endures
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 2,984 Words Author : Ettagale Blauer
How can culture survive when life itself is a struggle? Who can remember, let alone practice, rituals and dances, music and history, when soldiers are demanding a family's last morsel of food? Somehow, in Uganda, traditional culture hung on even during the darkest days. Indeed, the kingdoms themselves were actually abolished by the Obote dictatorship in 1967 in an attempt to make the people forget their ancestral loyalties.
In countries that have suffered natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods, these watershed events become the vehicles for dating moments in life. In Uganda, events divide between the Amin/Obote years of horror and the peaceful, decent years of recovery under Yoweri Museveni. He took control of the country by force in 1986 and in May of this year was victorious in the country's first direct and democratic presidential election, winning 74 percent of the vote.
Years of tyranny
Independence, achieved in October 1962, was hardly the liberation the Ugandans had fought for. Milton Obote quickly proved himself an erratic and despotic ruler. He put Idi Amin in charge of the army, perhaps the worst choice he could have made. Less than four years after Obote took office, he suspended the constitution, arrested ministers who opposed him, and took direct control of the government. Fearing the power of the population of Buganda, known as the Baganda, Obote created a constitution that abolished the kingdoms. When the kabaka, or leader of the Baganda, objected, Obote ordered Amin and his troops to attack the kabaka's palace. The kabaka escaped, never to return. He died in exile in London, in 1969. The Baganda were truly bereft.

SOBRE LA VIOLENCIA CONTA LA MUJER... testimonio presentado por la corresponsal de Isis en Uganda
1. What is the financial cost of Violence Against Women? Here in Africa and Uganda in particular, I am sure the cost would be enormous given the magnitude and prevalence of this particular Human Rights abuse i.e. for treatment, legal intervention and time taken by relatives to look after the victims. Traditionally in some societies in Uganda when a woman is bartered by her husband, her co-wife or a sister takes off time to look after her. This reduces the woman-power in the fields (agriculture) being the backbone of the economy and therefore has huge effects on the economy of the country. Women doctor activists have on occasions indicated that a substantial number of their patients (those who can afford it!) are treated from conditions related to violence, but no one has thought of quantifying how much is spent to this type of ill health. Therefore, it is very difficult to ascertain the actual cost because of lack of specific dis-aggregated data. I am glad however, to let
you know that UNFPA here in Uganda has spearheaded and succeeded in forming a gender coalition of women organisations working in the area of violence against women. Plans are under way to start collection of data on various types of violence against women. The financial costs are also expected to be analysed.

The Uganda Society
Introduction
The Uganda Society was founded in 1923 as the Uganda Literary and Scientific Society and gained its current name in 1933. In its early days, the society was made up of some seventy members, almost entirely confined to Entebbe. During the first five years of its existence, the society presented over forty lectures of scientific, historical, economic, or religious interest. Unfortunately, the organizers dispersed or became busy with other activities and the society had almost collapsed by 1928. One of the original founders, E.J. Wayland, managed to arrange an odd lecture from a distinguished visitor and to conserve the society's assets, allowing the society to be revived in the future. In June 1933, the Uganda Society was moved to Kampala and The Uganda Journal was established to help attract wider support for the society. Also, the society published various special studies such as Sir Albert Cook's "Uganda Memories (1897-1940)." E.J. Wayland gave the first lecture of the revived society at the Kampala Club in September of that year, and the first number of the journal appeared shortly thereafter. During this period, membership in the society rose to over 250 and editions of 400 journals sold out. The society moved to the Sikh Barracks, and subsequently to the National Cultural Center in Kampala in 1960. After a Ford Foundation grant provided for extending the Uganda Museum buildings in 1963, the society settled in the Education Wing of the museum. Since then, the Uganda Museum and the Uganda Society have shared a home.

For many countries, Expo 2005 Aichi, Japan will not only be an opportunity to show their culture and lifestyle but also to learn from other nations and share ideas within the global community.
Uganda is one country looking forward to participating in the Expo with that in mind. "We not only plan to show the cultural diversity of Uganda, but we come to learn also, with our eyes and ears wide open," says James B. Baba, ambassador of the Republic of Uganda to Japan. "It's going to be a big learning experience, sharing ideas and seeing how people live elsewhere in the world with the resources nature has given them."
James B. Baba
Ambassador to Japan
The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda Uganda's exhibit will focus on how the African country markets its resources and lives in harmony with nature. In the past, expos usually served as a means to export to international markets, but this time "we are keen to let the world know what products, services and natural resources we have in Uganda," says the 58-year-old Baba. Japanese-Ugandan ties go back to the early 1960s. Uganda had an embassy in Tokyo in 1973 but it was twice closed. It was permanently reopened in 1984. Before coming to Tokyo in October 2001, Baba served in Congo, Denmark, Ghana and China as well as a stint as deputy permanent representative to the United Nations in New York where he focused on poverty eradication, HIV/AIDS and sustainable development.

CULTURE-UGANDA: A Price Above Rubies Inter Press Service - February 18, 2004
Rachel Rinaldo KAMPALA, Feb 18 (IPS) - "We are going to shout about bride price across Africa and we are going to say 'no' to the sale of women," exclaimed Atuki Turner to a crowded hall at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda . Turner was speaking at the opening this week of the first international conference on the tradition of bride price. The groundbreaking event was organised by Mifumi, a women's non-governmental organisation (NGO) in rural eastern Uganda. It brought together activists from Uganda, Kenya Tanzania Nigeria Ghana ... Rwanda and South Africa to discuss the effect that payment of bride price has on women. Delegates also talked about ways of eliminating this practice in Africa and elsewhere. Bride price is one of the most widespread and entrenched cultural institutions in Africa. It requires a man to give money and possibly goods such as livestock and foodstuffs to his bride's family. Although the tradition varies from place to place, women's rights activists say that in most cases it contributes to gender inequality and domestic violence. Turner, Mifumi's Executive Director, said that in Uganda and various other countries there were no laws governing bride price. Many conference participants argued that the bride price has outlived its original purpose, which was to be a token of appreciation that cemented the bond between two families. Miria Matembe, a prominent member of parliament in Uganda, said the tradition was now an excuse to accumulate wealth - with a bride's family routinely demanding large numbers of livestock, as well as cash and other presents.
