However, few studies with such information exist. Thus, we used qualitative and quantitative methods to determine how local residents of Gulu, Uganda, viewed and responded to the 2000–2001 outbreak of EHF. Results indicated that Acholi people used at least three explanatory models to explain and respond to the outbreak; indigenous epidemic control measures were often implemented and were consistent with those being promoted by healthcare workers; and some cultural practices amplified the outbreak (e.g., burial practices). However, most persons were willing to modify and work with national and international healthcare workers.

The Ugandan community of WA presented an afternoon of traditional culture from Uganda.
Beginning with a drumming exhibition and fashion parade, youth from the community performed dances from Northern, Central and Eastern Uganda.

The Ugandan Community of Western Australia treated the large audience who came to KULCHA on Sunday 26th August to an afternoon of singing, dance and traditional cuisine.
The Ugandan Community is one of the smallest African communities in Western Australia and also one of the first to respond to the expressions of interest to participate in the Fiesta Kultura Emerge project 2001.
Clearly proud to share there unique culture from the 'pearl of Africa', Ugandan community members brought their friends and family to celebrate and see the cultural traditions of north, east, west and southern Uganda, including a wedding dance.
The audience was a complete mix of people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. The Ugandan Fiesta Kultura like the previous NILE and Ethiopian events proved an incredible forum for people to learn about the small but vibrant cultures within Western Australia.

EAST AFRICA ADVENTURE
East Africa offers a potpourri from anthropology to zoology; pearls of geological wonders, renowned wildlife, tantalizing environmental diversity, motivated rural economic development, modern urban centers and specimens of the oldest known human fossils. This is the land so eloquently described in the writings of Karen Blixen ('Out Of Africa'), Beryl Markham ('West With The Night') and dozens of other writers. Splitting the highlands of East Africa is the 3000 mile long Great Rift Valley. The same powerful forces that split the earth set the stage for the diverse habitats that not only support the big game animals, but also nurture more species of birds than any similar sized area on earth. Equally fascinating are social forces in the region a long history of highly organized kingdoms, shifting indigenous populations, centuries of trade with seafaring Arabs and a far shorter but intense period of European colonialism. Bicycle across beautiful steppes and scenic plateaus, past lakes, lush green forests and hills, and countless traditional villages. Bicycling is restricted in the game parks (for good reason) so vans are used where necessary on the program. These

Economics of Uganda
Uganda is about the size of Oregon. This country has many natural resources: fertile land, regular rainfall, and mineral deposits. The climate is tropical, with cooler temperatures in the mountain region. Despite its rich natural resources, Uganda was one of the poorest and least developed countries by the early 1990s as a result of political instability and poor economic policies. In 1992, the GNP was equivalent to only $170 per person. Fortunately, this situation improved dramatically beginning in 1994. Sound economic reforms produced annual economic growth of over 10% in the last two years. Agriculture, hunting, forestry, and fishing account for approximately 57% of the GDP . Principal cash crops are coffee (90% of exports), cotton, tea, and corn. About 80% of Ugandans work in agriculture, while 4% work in industry. The economy is also benefiting from growing ecotourism in Bwindi National Parkone of the last two homes of the mountain gorillas. The history of Uganda, like that of its neighbor Rwanda, included a period of European domination. Uganda was a British protectorate from the late 1800s until independence in 1962. Frequent political unrest followed until 1971, when Commander

By Prof. Emmanuel K. Twesigye, Ohio Wesleyan University, 29 January 1995. With its fertile land, Uganda could become Africa's bread basket. However, much of this land is idle, and young people flock into towns and cities, where there are no jobs or housing, and as a result, many are unemployed and homeless, who resort to illegal activities. We can discourage migration into the urban areas by developing the rural areas and creating opportunities and employment there.

Uganda Bishops' Letter on "Morning After" Pill
Posted by the Culture of Life Foundation -
KAMPALA, Uganda, MAR. 30, 2001 (Zenit.org) .- Here is the text of an open letter from the Uganda Catholic Bishops' Conference to the people and government of the nation on the "morning after" pill.
The "Emergency Contraceptive Pill ECP": An Appeal to Reason and Sincerity Kampala, 23rd March 2001 Brothers and sisters, The national media have advertised that the Commercial Marketing Strategies (CMS) a U.S. funded social marketing project, is introducing emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) in six districts of Uganda on a pilot basis (Bushenyi, Iganga, Masaka, Mbarara, Mpigi and Kampala). The ECP, also known as "the morning after pill", is a chemical product of hormonal nature. It is increasingly presented and marketed as a contraceptive (i.e.: preventing conception) that could be used in emergency situations after sexual intercourse in order to avoid an unwanted pregnancy. In reality, and because of the way it is used, it is an abortive product. Considering that the use of such a product touches fundamental human values to the point of affecting human life at its beginning, this Conference feels the urgent need and duty to offer some clarifications on the issue. In doing this, we are only re-stating well-known ethical stands and principles supported by precise scientific documentation and by Catholic ethical doctrine. At the same time this gives us the opportunity to express considerations and pastoral concerns that have been growing in us, and to make an appeal.

Culture
One can only start to comment about a culture from a person's own perspective.
Myself being a Dutch, let me give you some examples that i considered "shocking" when I first arrived here.
I present it to you from the standpoint that both our cultures are positive, yet very different.
Time The Muzungu (European or white man) that comes to Uganda is mostly shocked by the fact that all is so "easy going". The African seems totally unconcerned about "time". Yet you find most city dwellers wearing a wrist watch! This cannot be understood by the wazungu. (- wa -zungu- being the plural of the singular - mu -zungu-)
Well, time is a factor for the African, just not the most important one. The African takes the events as they come. He has learned that there is little that he can do to change the events and waits patiently for the event to take its due course. When the event is finished, that's when he starts thinking about the next event.
He also finds it much more important to give the person that he is talking with his full attention and honor that person by completely ignoring the fact that he had an appointment that he was going to just the moment you walked in the door. He will not even tell you that he had another appointment until one or two hours later.
