John Tyler
John Tyler was born in Charles City County, Virginia, the son of a prominent tobacco planter and former governor of the Commonwealth. Tyler graduated from the College of William and Mary, studied law and served for five years in the Virginia assembly. From 1816 to 1821, Tyler represented his state in the House of Representatives where he emerged clearly as a firm supporter of states’ rights in an age of nationalism; he voted against the Missouri Compromise . Tired of swimming against the current, Tyler returned to Virginia and served in the legislature (1823-25) and as governor (1825-27). In 1827, he was elected to the U.S. Senate and initially was supportive of John Quincy Adams , but voted against federally funded internal improvements and the protective tariff He became a supporter of Andrew Jackson and an opponent of the Bank of the United States , but Jackson’s frequent use of executive power pushed Tyler into the ranks of the Whig Party . He was the only senator to vote against the Force bill in 1833. From 1838 to 1840, Tyler was again a delegate in the Virginia assembly.

John Tyler
Tyler was the first vice president to assume the office of President after the death of his predecessor. His most notable accomplishment was the annexation of Texas.
The Early Years
John Tyler was born in Greenway, Virginia. His mother died when he was seven years old. He attended The College of William and Mary. Upon graduation,Tyler began to study law, first under his father (a former governor of Virginia), then under his cousin and finally under Edmund Randolph, the first US Attorney General. Tyler was admitted to the bar in 1809. From 1811-1816 he served as a Member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He led the efforts to censure the two Virginian senators who had voted for the creation of the Bank of New York. During the War of 1812, Tyler enlisted in the militia as a Captain. His unit, however, saw no combat. From 1816- 1821, Tyler, who was elected on a states' rights platform, served in the House of Representatives. In January of 1821, after consistently finding himself in the minority on most issues, he resigned. From 1823-1825, he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and from 1825-27 was Governor of Virginia. For the next nine years, Tyler served in the US Senate. He became a vocal opponent of Andrew Jackson. From 1838 to 1840 Tyler served as a Member of the Virginia House of Delegates. In 1840 he was elected Vice President to balance the ticket of William Harrison.

Jan. 18, 1862, Richmond), 10th president of the United States (1841-45) who took office upon the death of President William Henry Harrison. A maverick Democrat who refused allegiance to the program of party leader Andrew Jackson, Tyler was rejected in office by both Democrats and Whigs and functioned as a political independent. Born into a politically active family, young Tyler studied law and began his political career in the Virginia legislature (1811-16, 1823-25, 1839). He was elected a U.S. congressman (1817-21), state governor (1825-27), and U.S. senator (1827-36). His service in Washington was marked by consistent support of states' rights and strict construction of the Constitution. While in the Senate, Tylerwho was a slaveholdersought to prohibit the slave trade in the District of Columbia but opposed its abolition there without the consent of Maryland and Virginia. He voted against a protective tariff as unconstitutional but also condemned South Carolina's attempt to nullify it. In an unusual show of independence, Tyler resigned from the Senate in 1836 rather than yield to his state legislature's instructions to reverse his vote on Senate resolutions censuring President Jackson for removal of deposits from the Bank of the United States. This anti-Jackson stand endeared Tyler to the opposition

Eugene Volokh June 11, 2004 at 8:51am Possible Trackbacks Quid pro quo theory of the Religion Clauses: I generally support an equal treatment view of the Religion Clauses; the Establishment Clause generally bars discrimination in favor of religion, and the Free Exercise Clause generally bars discrimination against it. There are plausible arguments against such a view, especially (as to the Establishment Clause) if one is an originalist. But given the precedents that have accreted over the last several decades, precedents that the Court is unlikely to sweep away, it seems to me that the equal treatment view is on balance the best outcome we can get today. It generally treats people fairly, and it also has the merit of providing clear rules, rather than "The Establishment Clause requires some discrimination against religion, but not too much," or "The Free Exercise Clause requires some accommodation of religious observers, but not a lot."

    United Church of Christ
Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even only one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.
