John Tyler (1790-1862)
  • Education and Occupations:
      Education:
Tyler enrolled in the preparatory division of the College of William and Mary in 1802. He graduated from William and Mary, after completing college level studies, in 1807 From 1807-1809, he studied law under, successively, his father (John Tyler), his cousin (Chancellor Samuel Taylor), and the first U.S. Attorney General (Edmund Randolph). Tyler was accepted to the bar in 1809.
      Occupations:
During his 1816-1821 stay in the Virginia House of Delegates as a Jeffersonian Republican representative of Charles City County, Tyler led the effort to censure Virginia's two U.S. Senators for supporting the Bank of the United States after being instructed by the state legislature to do so. As a member of the House of Representatives from 1816-1821, Tyler opposed the Bank of the United States, high tariffs, and federally funded internal improvements. Also, he argued that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional because it restricted slavery, and he rallied unsuccessfully for the censure of General Andrew Jackson for his 1818 invasion of Florida. After resigning from the House of Representatives due to poor health and a distaste for constantly being in the minority, Tyler was again elected as a Jeffersonian Republican representative of Charles City County to the Virginia House of Delegates, where he served from 1823-1825.

Tyler's Presidency

To this body [the Senate] is committed in an eminent degree, the trust of guarding and protecting the institutions handed down to us from our fathers, as well against the waves of popular and rash impulses on the one hand, as against attempts at executive encroachment on the other. —Vice President John Tyler Go you now then, Mr. Clay, to your end of the avenue, where stands the Capitol, and there perform your duty to the country as you shall think proper. So help me God, I shall do mine at this end of it as I shall think proper. —President John Tyler He held the office of vice president for only thirty-three days; he presided over the Senate for less than two hours. Despite this brief experience, John Tyler significantly strengthened the office by enforcing an interpretation of the Constitution that many of his contemporaries disputed. Tyler believed that, in the event of a vacancy in the office of president, the vice president would become more than just the acting president. He would assume the chief executive's full powers, salary, and residence as if he himself had been elected to that position. Taken for granted today, that interpretation is owed entirely to this courtly and uncompromising Virginian who brought to the vice-presidency a greater diversity of governmental experience than any of his predecessors.

John Tyler - 10th President of the United States
Portrait of Hon. John Tyler, Va., President, U.S. (National Archives) John Tyler was the 10th (1841-1845) President of the United States of America but only the second one born in the United States. Tyler was elected Vice President in 1840 as running mate to William Henry Harrison, and assumed the presidency upon Harrison's death. Tyler was the first such vice-president to assume the presidency in this manner. His presidency was never taken seriously in his time; he was usually referred to as the "Acting President". Further, Harrison was to have been a genial figurehead controlled by Whig Party leaders, particularly Henry Clay. Tyler attempted to establish his own policy, and this put him at odds with Clay and others. Tyler's last act in office was perhaps the most significant: he signed the bill annexing Texas, which had formerly been part of Mexico. This act triggered war with Mexico. Tyler retired to a plantation named "Walnut Grove" he had bought in Virginia, renaming it "Sherwood Forest" to signify that he had been "outlawed" by the Whig party.

    Biography
He studied law with his father, John Tyler (1747-1813), who became Governor of Virginia (1808-1811), and followed his father as governor (1825-1827) after a stint in the House of Representatives. During his time as U.S. Senator, Tyler, who had begun as a strict state-rights Democrat, grew increasingly alienated from the Jacksonian Democrats, especially by Jackson's aggressive handling of the South Carolina nullification issue. Drawn into the newly-organized Whig Party , Tyler was elected Vice President in 1840 as running mate to William Henry Harrison , on the slogan "Tippecanoe—and Tyler too!" and assumed the presidency upon Harrison's death a month into his term.

“John Tyler was the son of a distinguished plantation family. He went to private school and William and Mary College. Upon graduation he studied law with his father. He entered politics and held state and national offices. He had been a Democratic-Republican but became a Whig. When Harrison died Tyler found himself without a party because he could not agree with the Whig legislators. He had opposing views about national parks, tariffs, federally financed projects and slavery. In spite of these differences he passed settlement laws, established trade with China, ended the second Seminole War, and paved the way for Texas’ annexation. Above all else, he established the presidency as a full-powered position when reached as a result of the president’s death. At the end of the term he retired from politics until 1860 when he voted in favor of Virginia’s leaving the Union at the state secession convention.”
