Virtual Field Trip: The Global Internet Language on the Web
Being the Americans we are, we tend to think that the world revolves around English. Much of the web's content is in English, but increasingly the rest of the world is asserting itself online as well. Fortunately, there are some ways around the language barriers. Alta Vista has a translation page that uses a utility called Babel Fish to translate web pages from around the world into English. 1. Find a few pages in another language and use Babel Fish to translate them. How well does Babel Fish Translate? Any funny translation errors that you see? Cybercafes In the United States, we're used to the idea that the way one accesses the Interent is via modem or broadband connection in the home. In much of the developing world, such connections are not practical. In many cities you will find cybercafes. Thus, it is actually practical to keep in touch with friends and family back home if you were to visit, say, Quito Ecuador. Pick a cybercafe from the list at Yupi.com the Latin American version of Alta Vista.

Why should we, and more particularly the countries of Oceania, be aware of the consequences of global warming? To better understand the effects of global warming, the students investigate how it affects the area of Oceania and especially the low-lying island of Tuvalu in the Pacific Ocean. After researching the topic and the region, the students produce illustrations of the probable effects of global warming on Oceania. This lesson relates to other lessons in this unit, such as Lesson 2 on the causes of global warming and Lesson 4 on some possible solutions to global warming.
