MEN AND WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP
Looking for answers in the South Pacific
Does cultural sensitivity take precedence over gender sensitivity?
BY ERICH WEINGARTNER I am sitting on a handwoven straw mat in a maneaba, the traditional sacred meeting house common in this part of the South Pacific. Having spread a long tablecloth on the floor, the women of the parish are loading it to the edge with samples of their culinary artistry. All those enjoying the meal with me are men from this island of Tuvalu. When the men have eaten, they retreat, leaving the women to clear away the remnants. In a traditional sacred meeting house on the Tuvalu islands in the South Pacific, men eat food prepared and served by the women, most of whom then leave. Two or three women stay close enough to fan the flies from the food. When the men finish, the women and children eat the leftovers. The men say this separation isn't their decision but is rather ancient tradition. Now it's time to share stories, I'm told. Anyone may speak. Any of the men, that is. The women are busy eating the leftovers with their children outside the area where we're seated. Parish leaders thank me for my visit and thank the World Council of Churches , which I'm representing. They express interest in the theme of my visit: the Ecumenical Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women.

LOCATIONS Our series will begin in the Pacific Ocean with a focus on the regions of Kiribati, French Polynesia, the islands of Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu, the Solomons, Trobriands, Carolines, Northern Marianas and Palau. Our projected Indonesian destinations include the islands of Papua, the Molucca Islands, the northern islands of Sulawesi and the southern islands of Sumatra. We will develop this list further to include as many suitable locations as possible.
Our intention is to find locations that exist outside of highly developed, highly trafficked areas. We will avoid heavily populated regions, common tourist destinations and urban centres, instead seeking out remote places that remain relatively inaccessible, where traditional lifestyles are widely practised. Our objective is to explore the amazing diversity of our planet,
paying attention to those secluded places
where unique examples can be found.

Tuvaluans are Polynesians with strong ethnic and cultural links with Tokelau, Tonga and Samoa. Their language is closely related to Samoan. It also reflects the early arrival of Tongans into the islands. Most traditions cite Samoa as their original home but there are also references to arrivals from Tonga and Kiribati. The Micronesian I-Kiribati arrived on Nui island several hundred years ago where they have become the dominant culture. Although the population in 1850 was 20,000, by 1875 - 25 years - disease had decimated the population to 3,000. Tuvalu has a population of 10,146, ninety-six percent of which are Polynesians who have ethnic and cultural ties with Samoa. Many Tuvaluans also live in Aotearoa/New Zealand and in Nauru where they are drawn by phosphate mining. Most Tuvaluans seeking work must move other nations. Confronted with an extremely high population density (395 people per sq km) Tuvalu is attempting to get bigger countries to accept more of its citizens.
