New Internationalist October 2001 The proceeds of the internet-address deal (rumoured to be $50 million) are supposed to be ploughed into improving education on the outer islands, rebuilding the crumbling government administration buildings and extending the airstrip. Better sea transport is vital for this isolated island nation. Seaplanes are not economical. There still remains only one inter-island ferry and one Australian defence ship (said to patrol international waters and fishing rights). Tuvalu has paid its $20,000 membership fee to join the United Nations and the $385,000 operating costs of an embassy in the US. As such its tiny civil service is probably the best travelled in the world, with paid invitations to international meetings and equal participation with China and the US. Their vote within the UN and the Commonwealth is sought after and continues to help bring in high levels of aid. The culture is changing, even if the fun-loving, dancing and gift-giving Polynesian elements remain. Wide differences exist between Funafuti and the outer islands. TV and video have reinforced violence and power plays rather than the pacific way of discussion and consensus. Alcohol and sexual misdemeanors are ongoing problems. Diane Goodwillie

Tuvalu
Culture
Tuvaluan culture is based on a complex set of social hierachies, courtesies and customs that regulate all aspects of public and private life. Several important social conventions should be observed by foreigners, including the removal of shoes when entering churches, meeting places ( manepa ) and private houses, and dressing conservatively when off the beach. Despite being geographically isolated, the Tuvalu people have an open, respectful relationship with visitors. Tuvaluans may indicate to a foreigner that they wish to have a private conversation; it is considered rude to speak a language in front of anyone who doesn't understand it, so they are simply being courteous. Dancing, singing and music play a big part in Tuvaluan culture, especially during the popular 'feasts of fatele'. If you are lucky enough to visit a village during a traditional celebration, you will be made welcome, and encouraged to join in the festivities. If you're stuck on Funafuti, groups of entertainers are available to perform traditional dances for a modest fee. Village, island and national governments are all grass-roots organisations. There are no political parties, despite the Western-based parliamentary model.

Country profile

Tuvalu consists of nine widely dispersed coral atolls in the South Pacific, halfway between Australia and Hawaii.
The population of 10,444 (1998 estimate) is almost entirely Polynesian, with a few Micronesians.
Tuvalu gained independence in 1978. It is a constitutional monarchy, with the British Queen as head of state. There is a unicameral parliament with 12 seats. Islands with more than 1,000 people have two representatives, and those with less have one. Representatives serve for four-year terms. Parliament selects the Prime Minister who, in turn, recommends the Governor General to the Queen. The Governor General selects the cabinet.
Tuvalu has poor soil, no known natural resources, and few exports. The islands are low-lying and vulnerable to global warming and they are too small and too remote for tourism. Subsistence farming and fishing are the main activities. Government revenues are made up largely from the sale of stamps and coins, together with worker remittances. About 1,000 Tuvalans work in Nauru in the phosphate mining industry. However, a process of repatriation is beginning, as phosphate mining declines. Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom set up an international trust for Tuvalu, and Japan and South Korea support this. The government is trying to reduce its dependence on foreign aid by privatising services and reducing the numbers of public servants.

Tuvalu comprises a chain, 580 kilometres long, of nine coral islands lying between 5 and 11 degrees south of the equator, just to the west of the International Date Line. Six of the islands are built around lagoons open to the ocean. These islands are: Nanumea Nui Vaitupu, Nukufetau, ... Funafuti and Nukulaelae. With the exception of Vaitupu where the sea enters the lagoon at only one point, these six are all atolls consisting of numerous pieces of land linked by a reef and arranged rather like a string of beads. Funafuti lagoon, Tuvalu
Of the other islands, Nanumaga and Niutao have completely landlocked lagoons while Niulakita has no lagoon at all, but only a swamp at its centre. Since it has never had a permanent population Niulakita, the southern most island, was not taken into account in the naming of the Tuvalu group. Tuvalu means "eight islands standing together".
The formation of coral islands was a topic of considerable scientific argument in the 19 th century. The question that particularly bothered scientists was this: since corals grow only at shallow depths in the sea (not below 80 metres), how is it that coral rock, formed from their remains, often extends for hundreds of metres beneath the sea?

They have coped with adversity in the form of foreign invaders, king tides and hurricanes that have all but devastated these tiny atolls. Each time the people aided by their strong religious faith have rebuilt their lives.

Pacific News member of Culture Gallery Introduction ANGLONESIA Anglonesia is a neologism used here to refer to Australia New Zealand and the United States in the Pacific (ANZUS). The progress from colonialism to independence in the Pacific Islands region (both north and south of the equator) has not brought an end to the influence of the former colonial powers. Presently, there are ten territories or dependencies linked directly to an extraregional government, and five others are constrained in their foreign policies by the terms of their free associaton compacts. Like these territories, the independent states are also affected by the political, security and economic policies of the extraregional powers. There continues to be an overlap of interests between outsiders and islanders, which is likely to persist even as more island stated begin to exert their influence more and more within the region as well as globally. The world's second smallest country with a total of only 26 square kilometres, Tuvalu has a pleasant tropical climate with little variation between day and night. Tuvalu is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean . With the exception of tiny Vatican City , it is the independent nation with the fewest inhabitants. Due to their low elevation (5 meters maximum), the islands that make up this nation are threatened by any future sea level rise . The Population may evacuate during the next decades to New Zealand , specially Niue , a small Pacific island (independent but associated with New Zealand) that isn't threatened by sea level rise, but does have decreasing population.
