    Nutrition of Turtles and Tortoises
Turtles, tortoises and terrapins are all in the group known as chelonians . They all possess a shell. The term tortoise is usually used to refer to terrestrial turtles in the United States, but we do have a few that stay predominately on the land, but are referred to as turtles , for example, the box turtle and the North American wood turtle. As they are such a diverse group of animals, it would be expected that the different species would have widely diverse diets. Green sea turtles are largely vegetarian and consume primarily see grasses, and the other sea turtles are mainly carnivorous, feeding on jellyfish, crabs, sea urchins, fish, sponges and barnacles. Some land tortoises are vegetarian, and spend their days grazing and foraging. Box turtles eat a little bit of everything encountered, and they are considered omnivores, meaning that they consume lots of bugs and worms, as well as plant material. Water turtles begin life as meat eaters and as they mature, they begin to consume more and more plant material. Correctly feeding your pet turtle or tortoise begins with knowing exactly what kind of chelonian you actually have. If you are unsure as to what kind of turtle or tortoise you actually own, check in an atlas, or ask a knowledgeable herper or breeder to help you in the proper identification. Once you know what type of chelonian that you have, feeding it becomes a lot easier.

    65. Hibernation Of Turtles And Tortoises
Hibernation of turtles and tortoises. To Hibernate or Not to Hibernate? Notall turtles and tortoises hibernate in their natural environments.
    http://www.mesavet.com/library/hibernation.htm
Hibernation of Turtles and Tortoises Definitions Hibernation - State of dormancy coinciding with the cold of winter. Brumation - used by some to specify hibernation in reptiles as separate from that in mammals. Estivation - a strategy to avoid harsh environments during summer months; thought to be a method to conserve water. Hibernation in More Detail: Hibernation is thought to occur mainly in response to endogenous cues such as short day lengths and the onset of cooler weather when the lack of suitable food sources and the climatic conditions are not conducive for normal reptile behavior. Endogenous cues including seasonal cycles in hormones, amino acids, and neurotransmitters are also thought to play a role in hibernation of some reptiles, but these roles are not yet well defined or understood. During hibernation there is substantial depression in metabolic function including cardiovascular function. Digestion ceases, the circulation is reduced, and the immune and other defense systems slow or stop. A turtle that is preparing to hibernate will become sluggish and have a decreased appetite. To Hibernate or Not to Hibernate?

Archelon was a car-sized marine turtle (a chelonian) that lived when the dinosaurs did, during the late Cretaceous period . Primitive turtles evolved over 250 million years ago, during the early Permian period. Turtles and tortoises are reptiles found worldwide. They have a hard shell protecting their body. The top shell is called the carapace; the bottom is called the plastron. The shell is covered with scutes, scales that are made of keratin (the same protein that our fingernails are made of). Some turtles live on land, others spend most of their lives in the seas, retrning to the shore only ro reproduce. Turtles hatch from eggs; there is no parental care. Many turtles can retract their head, 4 limbs, and tail into the shell for protection. They have a beak but no teeth, and no external ears, just two small holes on the sides of the head.

    Turtles and Tortoises
Turtles have been on earth for about 200 million years, since before the dinosaurs! The largest turtle ever to have lived was about 4 metres long, and it lived over 65 million years ago. Turtles and tortoises are reptiles , the only ones to have a shell. Turtle bodies are protected by a shell on top and underneath their bodies. Their backbone, breastbone and ribs have become part of the shell, so they cannot remove their shells.
Like all reptiles, turtles are cold blooded, which means their bodies are the same temperature as the surrounding air or water. They cannot remain active in cold weather. Most hibernate during winter, which means a kind of special sleep. Also like other reptiles, turtles shed their skin, usually in early spring. The shields, or scutes, of the shell lift and peel off, and skin from the head, neck, legs and tail flake off in pieces, to reveal new skin underneath. Turtles pull their legs, tails and heads into the shell for protection. Some turtles pull their necks into their shells in an 's' shaped curve, and others pull the neck sideways into their shell. These side-necked turtles are only found in the southern hemisphere. Female turtles lay eggs after mating with a male. A female digs a hole on land and lays many eggs, then covers the hole and leaves the eggs. When the eggs hatch, the tiny hatchlings dig to the surface and fend for themselves.

All turtles have shells and scaly skin, but each species has special characteristics to live in its environment, such as webbed feet for swimming, long claws for digging, or a flattened shell to hide from predators in rock crevices. No matter where turtles live, they lay their eggs on land. Many turtles lay only a few eggs each year, and some lay only one egg every other year. In addition, many turtles reach sexual maturity at ten or more years. Together, these factors mean that the birth rate of wild turtle populations is very low. For many reasons, the collection of wild turtles places tremendous pressure on populations and has caused the endangerment of many species, especially when species face other human-caused threats like habitat destruction, water pollution, and unnatural predators.

American red-ear turtles are known for their decorative tummies.
Turtles are great pets. Kids will have fun picking them out at the pet store, or they can catch them at the local pond. Safety Note: Before you allow your child to bring home a turtle he has captured, remember that it is a wild animal, and ideally it should remain in its natural habitat. Also, turtles can carry salmonellosis, a potentially fatal disease caused by the Salmonella bacteria, so it's a good idea to obtain a pet turtle from a reputable source. Turtle Types
    • Musk turtle
    • African red-bellied side-neck turtle (holds neck to the side)
    • Snapping turtle (can weigh as much as100 pounds)
    • American red-ear turtle
    • Soft-shell turtle (the fastest-swimming turtle in America; its neck can reach its back feet).

Species of these reptiles, belonging to the order Testudines , occur in all the continents of the world, with the exception of Antarctica. They rove all habitats from open seas to arid deserts, and have existed almost unchanged for over 200 million years. While many of the species are very different, they do have many things in common. All turtles and tortoises are protected by a shell, and all reproduce by laying eggs. Unfortunately, these two factors have put them under considerable pressure from mankind.
    Threats
While they have existed for hundreds of millions of years, today their populations are under great threat, and they are rapidly disappearing from areas where formerly they were abundant. Massive destruction of habitat, egg collection and direct exploitation for the pet and commercial trade has had a huge impact on numbers. Whole shells and items made from tortoise shell are readily available in stores and markets, as are stuffed specimens. The meat is also consumed, and other parts are used in the preparation of medicinal products. This, combined with overhunting and habitat destruction and pollution, has raised concern over their wellbeing and future.
