The tropical breeze hits you as you step onto the tarmac, and you start looking forward to the incredible SCUBA diving that awaits. Many beaches in the islands and cays are accessible only by boat. B ritish V irgin I slands The British Virgin Islands, about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico and less than one mile from the U.S. Virgin Islands, are a group of about 50 islands, islets and cays, most of which lie around the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Tortola, about 10 square miles, and Virgin Gorda, 8 square miles, are the largest ones. Most of them are volcanic, with exception of Anegada, a coral atoll 15 miles north of the rest of the archipelago. Other important islands are Jost Van Dyke, Norman, Peter and Beef Island, where the International Airport is located. First inhabited by Siboney indians, the islands were visited by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to America, in 1493. Spaniards looked for gold and pirates took advantage of the islands' many hidden coves. Dutch settlers arrived in the 17th century, but soon the British replaced them. Nowadays the BVI have a governor appointed by England, but their constitution allows some autonomy from UK.

Grand Turk

Grand Turk is the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Turks and Caicos Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean. These islands are approximately 575 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. Grand Turk is 6 miles long and 1 mile wide. The map above shows the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Caicos Islands are larger and more numerous than the Turks Islands. The Caicos Islands are to the west, and the Turks Islands are to the east. These two island groups are separated by a deep ocean trench. This trench is the Turks Islands Passage. The trench is 30 miles wide and over 7000 feet deep! This trench is a great place to see many oceanic creatures. In the springtime, whales migrate through the Turks Islands Passage. The Turks and Caicos Islands are a colony of Great Britain. The capital city of Grand Turk is Cockburn Town. During the 1998-1999 school year, ReefNews took a long journey to Grand Turk and saw many marine creatures, dove into the great Turks Island Passage barely 1/4 mile west of the west coast, and saw a beach which may have been Columbus's first landing place in the New World. We also visited the Turks and Caicos National Museum to see the remains of a mysterious shipwreck that is nearly 500 years old. Was this one of Columbus's ships? Tropical

    TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS
TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS , a group in the British West Indies. They belong geographically to the Bahamas and lie between 210 and 22 N. and 71 and 72 37 W. They are of coral and sand formation, their combined area being 169 sq. m. The Turks Islands, taking their name from a species of cactus having the appearance of a turbaned head, are nine in number, but Grand Turk (Io sq. m.) and Salt Cay (5~ sq. m.) are the only two of any size. The town of Grand Turk, on the west of the island of that name, is the seat of government and a port of registry. Salt Cay has a good harbour. The Caicos Islands lie to the north-west of Turks Islands and are seven in number. Cockburn Harbour on South Caicos, 22 m. from Grand Turk, is the principal settlement and a port of entry. The climate, though somewhat relaxing, is healthy, but there is a scarcity of drinking water, the average annual rainfall being only 2712 in. The mean temperature is 82 F., but owing to the sea breezes the climate is never oppressive. Salt raking is the staple industry. Sisal hemp is grown, sponges are found in some quantities off the coast and there are four sponge-curing factories on the Caicos Islands. Pink pearls are occasionally found. The exports, chiefly to the United States, include salt, sponges and sisal hemp. Grand Turk is in cable communication with Bermuda and with Kingston, Jamaica, some 420 m. to the S.W. See J. N. Bellin, Description geographique des debouquements au nord de St Dominique (1768); the Jamaica Handbook (London, yearly) and Sir C. P. Lucas, Historical Geography of the British Colonies, vol. ii. (2nd ed., Oxford, 1905).

    These remnants of continental
Cave on Middle Caicos debris are buried under thousands of feet of limestone rock which has been formed by the deposition of skeletal remains from marine organisms and precipitation of calcium carbonate material. Precipitation is a process where, under the right conditions, the dissolved minerals in the sea water are deposited to form small particles called ooids. These ooids then cement together to form oolite rock, which makes up most of the Turks and Caicos area. Additional rock was formed by the fossilized remains of plankton, algae, coral, shellfish, and the waste pellets of flat fish.
On all of the Islands caves can be found. These have been formed when slightly acidic water dissolves the limestone. The caves on Middle Caicos form the largest cave network in the Bahamian archipelago. These caves are ideal habitats for wildlife and were used by the Lucayans , for whom they had religious significance. For a short while there was a guano industry, where bat droppings were collected for use in the production of fertiliser. These sinkholes and caves provide wonderful sources of research material for paleontologists and archaeologists.
