RELATED WORK (Jeitun, Southern Turkmenistan) BACKGROUND The presence of stone tools and other artefacts in caves and rock shelters bordering the ancient shorelines of the Caspian Sea and in the Kopet Dag are testimony to long term human occupation of the region, perhaps stretching back over a million years. Recent work at the major early Neolithic site of Jeitun, near Turkmenistan's capital, Ashgabad has given interesting insights into this little studied area. This site, located on the southern margin of the Kara Kum Desert, has been claimed to represent one of the earliest known irrigation agriculture systems in the world. Over the past 3,000 years the area has witnessed the rise and fall of important empires from the Persians to the Mongols. Based on irrigation, large Urban centres were established far into the Kara Kum Desert. The most famous, Merve, having a population of c. 1 million by the 10th century in a region which today is unable to support any major concentrations of people. CURRENT PROJECT This project is one of the first western archaeological expeditions into the area. Initially a 5-year programme is envisaged which aims to achieve a greater understanding of past human-environmental interactions, the changing landscape, the cultural impacts and the implications of this heritage for the future development of western Turkmenistan.

Via the outdoor museums of Uzbek Silk Road cities, a string of jam-packed bazaars, an abundance of yurts and five thousand kilometres later, we arrived at our eventual destination: Son Kol lake, home to the nomadic horsemen of the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan. We've tried to make it more than just a tale of shashlyk kebabs and vodka. As well as posting diaries of our thoughts, eclectic images and a snippet of cultural background, we've noted practical resources for the more pedal-driven reader. This includes maps, stats, visa help, treadly shops and in true cycle-tourer style, a particularly beady eye was cast over the region's culinary offerings. Loaded with challenges, encounters and hospitality, we can't claim that travelling by tandem was always easy. "There is currently a heightened state of security in Turkmenistan," the U.S. State Department said, urging U.S. citizens to be cautious and to make sure that their travel documents were in order. "Police have conducted widespread questioning, home searches, and car searches. Security personnel have set up checkpoints on major roads," the State Department warned in a statement. "U.S. citizens are strongly advised to ensure they have complied with Turkmenistan's visa and registration requirements and to carry their passports with them at all times," the statement added. U.S. citizens were also urged to register at the U.S. Embassy in the Turkmenistan capital Ashgabat. Turkmenistan President Saparmurat Niyazovan's motorcade was raked by machine-gun fire early on November 25 as it traveled through central Ashgabat. No one was hurt.

Climate Geography Turkmenistan shares borders with Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the east, Afghanistan to the south-east and Iran to the South. To the west is the Caspian Sea. Nearly 80% of the country is taken up by the Kara-Kum (Black Sand) desert, the largest in the CIS. The longest irrigation canal in the world stretches 1,100km (687 miles), from the Amu-Darya River in the east, through Ashgabat, before being piped the rest of the way to the Caspian Sea.
