U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan: Tenth Anniversary
The U.S. Embassy in Ashgabat recently marked its tenth anniversary of operations in Turkmenistan March 17, 2002. "We are extremely pleased to celebrate ten years of working with the people and Government of Turkmenistan," Ambassador Laura Kennedy stated. "I am proud that the U.S. Government was one of the first to recognize the independence of Turkmenistan. I hope that the next ten years will bring closer cooperation on a range of issues, from education and civil society to narcotics control and regional security issues." From the beginning of its operations, the American Mission has focused on expanding and strengthening Turkmen-American cooperation and especially investing in the future of Turkmenistan. Over 600 citizens of Turkmenistan, the majority of whom are young people, have traveled to the United States on official exchange programs to study or meet with their professional counterparts. Recent cultural ties include joint projects such as the restoration of the mosaic tile of the 15th-century Seit Jemmalatdin Mosque in Annau. As part of the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation program, local archeologists and historians will reconstruct the unique mosaic tile of the mosque, build tourist walkways, and strengthen the foundation of the ruins. Ambassador Kennedy and Turkmenistan's Minister of Culture Orazgeldy Aydogdiyev officially opened the project on October 11, 2001 by joining two pieces of the ancient mosaic, which both said was symbolic of the two countries' cooperation and friendship.

Ashghabat - Culture Ashghabat after the USSR broke into pieces stoped getting any funds from Moscow. Considering that Turkmens were mainly nomads, they don't have the urge to live in a nice city. In 1948 there was an earthquake (measuring 9 at the richter scale) that destroyed most of the city and 110,000 people died. For five years the area was closed to outsiders while bodies were recovered and the wreckage cleared. Therefore most building are new. The remains of the vanished ancient cities of Nisa and Anau are just outside Ashghabat and worth a visit if you are interested in archeological sites. Firuza, the old hunting reserve of the Persian royal family, is now a popular mountain escape for those seeking relief from the heat of the plains. Buried 60m (200ft) underground in the accessible lower slopes of the Kopet Dag mountains is a hot-water mineral lake known as the 'Father of Lakes' where you can take a dip in 36°C (97°F) waters.
    ATTRACTIONS
    The History Museum
There are 8 permanently functioning exhibition halls in four different areas : history of Turkmenistan and Turkmen nation, history of Turkmen carpets, nature, ethnography. Historical exposition covers the period from primeval times to modern days. Visitors of the museum can purchase Turkmen crafts and souvenirs in the shop located in the museum. The Carpet Museum
Carpets and carpet-making in Turkmenistan arose from the needs of its inhabitants' nomadic lifestyle. They served not only as floor-covering, but satisfied asthetic desires of the people as well. Carpet products chuvals khorjuns (sacks), torbas (tent and saddle-bags) were designed for use as clothing and for transportation of various household items in "carpet bags." Carpet products decorated camels, horses, nomad tents, and wedding processions. Tourists can admire the art of carpet-making in the Turkmen Carpet Museum in Ashgabat, where the world's biggest carpet hangs. The carpet is 80m long and 10m wide, took four women three and a half years to create, and is displayed folded in two! In addition, you can see unique carpets and rugs decorated with ornaments of different Turkmen tribes, as well as carpet portraits.
