Turkish Language Classes at the University of Arizona
Welcome to the Turkish language program Website at the University of Arizona. Turkish has been taught in the department of Near Eastern Studies since 1996. Today we realize an important reason for a student's educational choices is the kind of earning capabilities and rewarding career that schooling will make possible. The world is becoming globally interdependent, and strategic posturing enhances one's competitive position for getting good jobs worldwide: you need a global education. American businesses are calling out for employees who can communicate in more than one language and who have knowledge and experience in other cultures. Turkish businesses also seek Americans with competent skills in Turkish language and culture — to translate, and to engage in the special, sensitive task of cross-cultural interpretation.
    • Studying Turkish at the University of Arizona makes you a member of a select group of individuals in the US who speak a less-commonly-taught foreign language — Turkish! Turkish skills also make you a highly sought after employee for Turkish businesses in both American and Turkey. For example, the 1990 U.S. Census Bureau report indicates less than 0.1% of the American public understands Turkish, while much larger numbers of Turks are competent in English.
    • Students who have taken Turkish in conjunction with another major report that they immediately get asked about their Turkish studies during job interviews. Graduates from our program have jobs in government agencies, research in Middle East history, businesses, marketing, banking, accounting, teaching, journalism, archaeology, linguistics, international affairs, engineering, and the sciences. An increasing number of Turkish language students are making direct use of their Turkish language skills, and some are even employed in Turkey.

THE turkish language. Since 1932 language reform has been in progress introducing Turkish words in lieu of their Arab, Persian and French synonyms.
    http://www.focusmm.com/trgn0011.htm
    THE TURKISH LANGUAGE
T urkish originates from the Ural-Altaic languages and is structured like Hungarian and Finnish; root syllables have another root syllable attached to them. At the same time as the other reforms in Turkey, the Arabic alphabet was replaced by the Latin alphabet (1st Nov.1928). Since 1932 language reform has been in progress introducing Turkish words in lieu of their Arab, Persian and French synonyms. Turkish has been written in a phonetic, Latin alphabet of twenty-nine letters. W ith only few variation, the pronunciation is like English. However, each letter represents only one sound. The vowel soundsare the a of father; the e of edit ;the i (without point), of the unaccented e of the; the i , the ee of feet ; the o of so ,the , of the German word sch n; the u ,the u of pool ; and the the Germangr n. Consonants that differ are the c pronounced as the j of Jack, the as ch , the g with a small line above it which is silent g and usually lengthens the previous vowel, the j as the g of gendarme and the s(with point) as sh. Syllables within a word are only lightly accented, if at all. All letters are pronounced. Thus Side (a port on the Mediterranean) has two syllable.

The turkish language is spread over a large geographical area in Europe and Asia; recent studies show that this language goes back 5500 years, and perhaps even
    http://www.atamanhotel.com/language.html

    The Turkish Language
The standard blow-your-mind for the turkish language example is: Afyonkarahisarlýlaþtýramadýklarýmýzdanmýsýnýz ? which means: Aren't you one of those people whom we tried -unsuccessfully- to make to resemble the citizens of Afyonkarahisar ? The Turkish language is spread over a large geographical area in Europe and Asia; recent studies show that this language goes back 5500 years, and perhaps even 8500. At the same time, it is one of the most widely spoken tongues in the world - the sixth most widely spoken , to be precise. It is spoken in the Azeri, the Türkmen, the Tartar, the Uzbek, the Baskurti, the Nogay, the Kýrgýz, the Kazakh, the Yakuti, the Cuvas and other dialects. Turkish belongs to the Altaic branch of the Ural-Altaic family of languages, and thus is closely related to Mongolian, Manchu-Tungus, Korean, and perhaps Japanese. Some scholars have maintained that these resemblances are not fundamental, but rather the result of borrowings, however comparative Altaistic studies in recent years demonstrate that the languages we have listed all go back to a common Ur-Altaic. Turkish is a very ancient language, with a flawless phonetic, morphological and syntactic structure, and at the same time possesses a wealth of vocabulary. The fundamental features which distinguish the Ural-Altaic languages from the Indo-European are as follows:
