SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report ANKARA, Turkey The Turkish parliament is to debate granting permission for U.S. forces to modernise its bases in Turkey for use in a possible war against Iraq. Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said Wednesday his government would seek parliamentary authority on Thursday. "Tomorrow we will go to parliament and win authority from parliament," he told reporters ahead of a cabinet meeting. The United States has requested to use Turkish air bases and military facilities to establish a secondary, northern front against Iraq in the event of war. Turkey already lets U.S. and British aircraft fly sorties over northern Iraq to enforce a "no-fly zone" imposed after the 1991 Gulf War, but it fears a new conflict may batter a fragile economy and stir unrest in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

Turkey's parliament puts U.S. troops on hold
U.N.: Iraq begins destroying banned missiles
As U.S. Navy vessels wait offshore, Turkey's parliament votes against a plan to base U.S. troops in Turkey. Story Tools PERSPECTIVE
TIME.com Contributor Jim Lacey writes in an article titled "How Commanders Think":
"Last week, I sat down with an author who is collecting material for a book about the 101st Airborne Division's part in any future conflict with Iraq. His current working title is 'The Fun War.' It came to him after he spoke with a number of the senior commanders of the 101st and became enamored of the idea that they were all looking forward to a war in Iraq. He is convinced that they all believe any potential conflict will be little more then an outing in the sun, and great fun for all involved.
"That author is wrong.
"After spending several weeks meeting with many of these same leaders and watching them conduct their daily activities, I can testify that not a single one of them considers a possible invasion of Iraq fun. In fact, they would be insulted by the very idea that anyone would attribute such a motivation to them. The proposed title also betrays a complete lack of understanding of how our professional warriors think.
"None of the officers with whom I have met expect the upcoming trial to be fun. What they do expect is to win. They state this conviction not out of arrogance, but out of quiet conviction. And that is exactly what America should expect from its professional warriors."

    Major earthquake rocks northwestern Turkey
    August 16, 1999

Web posted at: 11:11 p.m. EDT (0311 GMT)
From staff and wire reports ISTANBUL, Turkey A strong earthquake shook northwestern Turkey early Tuesday, leveling buildings, cutting power and phone lines and sending frightened residents into the streets, local radio reported. The quake's epicenter was near Izmit , a city 65 miles (104 kilometers) east of Istanbul on the eastern shore of the Sea of Marmara, according to privately owned TGRT radio. The quake was given a preliminary magnitude of 7.1, said Bill Smith of the U.S. Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado, which monitors seismic activity worldwide. An earthquake registering between 7.0 and 7.9 is considered a "major" earthquake, capable of widespread heavy damage.

    Turkey's Islamic-rooted government surprises skeptics

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) When Turkey's prime minister showed up last week at a reception held by President Ahmed Necdet Sezer, he came without his wife, and thus demonstrated how different from fears his first year in office has been. His wife wears a head scarf, which Sezer, an avowed secularist, regards as a symbol of female Muslim militancy. So he had decreed that political wives who wear them should not be invited. Many angry husbands boycotted the affair, but Recep Tayyip Erdogan uttered barely a murmur of protest. His restraint is indicative of the pragmatism Erdogan has brought to the job, dispelling fears that his Islamic-rooted party's huge election victory a year ago Monday would inject Muslim ideology into the bloodstream of constitutionally secular Turkey. Instead, Erdogan has taken pains to avoid confronting the secular establishment that had already driven an Islamic-oriented government out of power in 1997. He has steered clear of religion and focused on the nation's most pressing priorities fixing the economy and getting Turkey into the European Union.

SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report ANKARA, Turkey (CNN) Hours after Turkey's foreign minister said Tuesday the United States would be allowed to use Turkish air bases in a possible war with Iraq, his office said the country had made no such commitment. The statement from the Foreign Ministry seemed to underscore just how delicate the issue is in the only NATO country whose population is predominantly Muslim. Turkish Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis said earlier in the day that Turkey would prefer a peaceful solution to the Iraq situation, but if it comes to war then "of course we will cooperate with the United States because it's a big ally and we have excellent relations with the United States." "What we mean by cooperation is opening air bases and opening facilities," Yakis said in a news conference after meeting with British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.

Turkey and Greece agree mine deal
Greek Foreign Minister Papandreou: "A first step to closer ties" ANKARA, Turkey Turkey and Greece have agreed to cooperate to clear landmines from along their borders. The NATO allies, but historical rivals, agreed to adopt the Ottawa Treaty against the use of landmines during talks in Ankara on Friday. The two countries remain divided over the status of Cyprus, which Turkey invaded in 1974, and their common border is scattered with mines. The invasion was in response to an Athens-backed Greek Cypriot coup aimed at union with Greece. And they came to the brink of war in 1996 over the ownership of a rocky outcrop in the Aegean Sea, but the tense bilateral relations have eased in recent years. A Deadly Earthquake in Turkey The numbers were all big, and all bad, and if this wasn't the big one, it was close enough. The earthquake that hit western Turkey Tuesday morning at 3 a.m. local time weighed in at a heavy 7.8 on the Richter scale, a number that placed it in the neighborhood of the big (7.9 magnitude) San Francisco quake of 1906. More than 1000 people are dead, a number that will undoubtedly go up. Inspecting the damage AP/ANATOLIA
