62. Ottoman Empire
With the victory of the Turkish nationalists, who had refused to accept the peace terms and overthrew the sultan in 1922, modern turkey s history began.
http://www.crystalinks.com/ottomanempire.html
Ottoman Empire - Turkey
The Ottomans are one of the greatest and most powerful civilizations of the modern period. Their moment of glory in the sixteenth century represents one of the heights of human creativity, optimism, and artistry. The empire they built was the largest and most influential of the Muslim empires of the modern period, and their culture and military expansion crossed over into Europe. Not since the expansion of Islam into Spain in the eighth century had Islam seemed poised to establish a European presence as it did in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Like that earlier expansion, the Ottomans established an empire over European territory and established Islamic traditions and culture that last to the current day (the Muslims in Bosnia are the last descendants of the Ottoman presence in Europe). The Ottoman empire lasted until the twentieth century. While historians like to talk about empires in terms of growth and decline, the Ottomans were a force to be reckoned with, militarily and culturally, right up until the break-up of the empire in the first decades of this century. The real end to the Ottoman culture came with the secularization of Turkey after World War II along European models of government. The transition to a secular state was not an easy one and its repercussions are still being felt in Turkish society today, nevertheless, secularization represents the real break with the Ottoman tradition and heritage. The Ottoman Empire was a vast state founded in the late 13th century by Turkish tribes in Anatolia and ruled by the descendants of Osman I until its dissolution in 1918. Modern Turkey formed only part of the empire, but the terms ³Turkey² and ³Ottoman Empire² were often used interchangeably.

    History of Anatolia
In 1055 a group of Central Asiatic Turks, the SELJUKS, conquered Baghdad and established a Middle Eastern and Anatolian empire. When this empire was broken up by the Mongol invasion, one of the remaining local powers became known as the Ottoman dynasty, after its leader OSMAN I. The OTTOMAN EMPIRE spread from northwestern Anatolia and captured Constantinople in 1453. At the peak of their power the Ottomans controlled much of the eastern Mediterranean. The Ottomans had a sophisticated system of internal administration and also organized the first standing army in Europe. As the Ottoman Empire began to collapse under its own weight in the 18th and 19th centuries, it became a battleground for rival European powers, wedged as it was between the Russian and Austrian empires (see EASTERN QUESTION). By the outbreak of World War I the Ottoman Empire had essentially been divided into spheres of influence by the great European powers, but a reform movement was active within the Ottoman Empire itself. The YOUNG TURKS brought about a revolution in 1908 and were successful in introducing civil and social reforms of far-reaching consequence. In 1922, however, the Turks, led by Mustafa Kemal (later known as Kemal ATATURK) and Ismet INONU, defeated the armies occupying Anatolia. Inonu then won what has been called "the greatest diplomatic victory in history" when the Treaty of Lausanne (see LAUSANNE, TREATY OF) recognized the Republic of Turkey. The republic was declared on Oct. 29, 1923, and Ataturk was elected its first president. Turkey remained neutral in World War II until it joined the Allies in February 1945. Turkey joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1952.

For more than 500 years, Turkey has been a refuge for Jews fleeing persecution in other countries. With the rise of the Ottoman Empire in the 14th century, Jews benefited from a standard of religious tolerance unique in European history. The Ottomans welcomed Jewish refugees from Spain and Italy throughout the Inquisition. Over time, these Sephardic Jews established a strong middle class, with some achieving prestigious positions as court physicians and diplomats. Following World War I, the Turkish Republic was formed and a secular constitution adopted. The Turkish government again championed Jews during World War II, interceding on behalf of Turkish Jews living in Nazi-occupied countries. It is estimated that Turkish diplomatic representatives succeeded in rescuing more than 3,000 Jews slated for deportation to Nazi concentration camps. The Turkish economy has declined sharply over the past few years, with high inflation and unemployment rates and the failure of more than 35,000 businesses. The Jewish community has been greatly affected by this crisis, and its members have continued to lose jobs and businesses. With no government social safety net, many community members now have no source of income and find themselves unable to fulfill their communal obligations. This has left vital Jewish community institutions - normally funded by donations from community members - struggling to cover their operating costs.

Starting from the Establishment of the Ottoman Empire The First World War and the Mondros Cease-Fire Agreement The Ottomans joined the First World War in 1914 as a result of fait accompli. During the war, the empire suffered a loss of four hundred thousand casualties and being defeated by the Allies, signed an armistice at Mondros on October 30, 1918. Following this armistice, the Ottomans were forced to sign the Sevres Treaty on August 10, 1920 which aimed at dividing the lands of the empire. The Turkish nation in protest to the Mondros Armistice and the Sevres Treaty started its War of Liberation under the command of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. After the victory, the Turkish Grand National Assembly in Ankara abolished the office of the Sultan on November 1, 1922, thus ending 631 years of Ottoman rule in the world. go to top Efforts to Disintegrate the Empire go to top Subversive Organizations Shortly after the Mondros Treaty, many organizations and societies appeared which were against national independence. Besides such pro-Ottoman and caliphate societies as the "Sulh ve Selameti Osmaniye Firkasi (Peace and Ottoman Salvation Party), the "Teali Islam Cemiyeti" (Moslem Promotion Society), the "Hürriyet ve Itilaf Firkasi" (Liberty and Entente Party), there were other societies of the minorities such as the "Mavrimira" and the "Pontus Society". Their subversive activities during the First World War continued after the Treaty in order to prevent Turks from establishing a Notional State in Anatolia.

One of these resources inherited by modern turkey is the successful and shining history of the Turks over a time frame of more than 4,000 years.
    http://www.turkishembassy.org/countryprofile/turksandturkey.htm
Home Country Profile The Republic of Turkey, founded in 1923, has its roots in two historical sources deep in the depths of the past. One of these resources inherited by modern Turkey is the successful and shining history of the Turks over a time frame of more than 4,000 years. The other is the fact that Turks have been settled in Anatolia since the 11th century. The Huns
The first Turkish tribe that is mentioned in history is the Huns. Clear records about the Huns made their appearance in the 8th century B.C. Chinese sources refer to the Huns as Hiung-nu and in time, some of the Huns migrated to the West. The Gokturks
Founded in 552 AD by Bumin Khan, the Gokturks engaged in widespread diplomatic activity. The famed Orhun epitaphs from this period are made up of the tombstone inscriptions of Tonyukuk (d.720), Kültigin (d.731) and Bilge Kagan (d.734) The Uygurs
The rule of the Göktürks was brought to an end in the year 745 by the Uygurs, who were of the same ethnic stock as themselves. In this manner all the Turks who had converged under the banner of the Göktürks were dispersed to that of the Uygurs that the agricultural basin where they lived became known as Turkistan. In the year 1229, the Mongols put an end to Uygur sovereignty; the Uygurs however, became their cultural and political mentors.

As the Bush Administration's push for war against Iraq gains momentum, the people of Turkey get more and more uneasy. Bridging the landscape between Europe and Asia, Turkey shares part of its southern border with Iraq. This puts them uncomfortably close to the battle zone, making the Turkish nation a political and strategic hot spot. Already, its location has significantly affected talks among NATO members, as Turkey knows such a war would severely undermine the nation's vitality with the imminent waves of refugees and loss of tourism and trading dollars. Although this nation suffered violent skirmishes between local rebels and Turkish authorities in 1999, along with some negative effects from U.S. air strikes on Afghanistan since 2001, those impacts would likely pale in comparison to the fallout from a U.S. war on Iraq. With Turkey's long history and rich culture, it's no wonder they're nervous over what they risk losing. Located between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, for millennia this region has thrived as a trading and cultural center. Travelers can see signs of its past from its ancient fortresses and mosques to its spice bazaars to its arts, and to its mix of traditional and contemporary lifestyles. In this week's lesson you'll be traveling to Turkey to take in the sights, history and culture of this region. So grab your gear, and let's get going!
