Catalhuyuk is often cited as the earliest known sizeable human habitation. The preservation of artifacts and, to some extent, the environment of a culture of this age has stimulated much discussion and interest across many different interest groups. The Museum of Anatolian Civilization has a very good Catalhuyuk exhibition but new finds are emerging all the time and each item contributes to the discussion as to what was going on almost 10,000 years ago.
We've collected together some of the best online resources and you'll find links to them from this page.

Catalhoyuk is situated just to the South east of Konya on this map. This means its fairly accessible from Ankara, Cappadocia and the central Mediterranean coast. It is not a typical daytrip destination and you are unlikely to find tour operators covering it at all. If this part of history interests you and you would like to see an archeological team at work, then hire a car and go see.

Turkey tradition
"The turkey is a much more respectable Bird and withal a true original Native of North America". Remarked Benjamin Franklin, the scientist cum statesman, who was in favor of making Turkey the national Bird, instead of Bald Eagle. The wild turkey is native to northern Mexico and the eastern United States. Later it was domesticated in Mexico, and was brought into Europe early in the 16th century.
Since that time, turkeys have been extensively raised because of the excellent quality of their meat and eggs.
Some of the common breeds of turkey in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland, and Bourbon Red. Though there is no real evidence that turkey was served at the Pilgrim's first thanksgiving, but through ages it became an indispensable part of the Thanksgiving tradition. The tradition of turkey is rooted in the 'History Of Plymouth Plantation', written by William Bradford some 22 years after the actual celebration.
In his letter sent to England Edward Winslow, another Pilgrim, describes how the governor sent "four men out fowling" and they returned with turkeys, ducks and geese.

He founded the modern Turkish Republic out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire; an empire that was seen as the sick man of Europe at the turn of the century. His modern perspective created a new nation and a country, and a secular state understanding different from most other Islamic countries was introduced by him. Once you step in Turkey, you will see his statues and the busts all over. One of the best books written about Ataturk from a foreigner's point of view is the book titled " The Rebirth of a Nation" by Lord Kinross. He was born in the year 1881 in Thessaloniki, at that time within the Ottoman Empire's borders at that time, in Greece at present . His full name was Mustafa Kemal and the Ataturk surname, meaning the father of Turks, was given to him by the Turkish people (1934 November 24th.) in accordance with the reforms he introduced to create a modern Turkish country. His background was military, and he served in various posts in the Ottoman army. During the First World War , he was the colonel in charge of Infantry at Gallipoli in 1915 and it was his genious defense tactics that prevented the allied forces ( British, French, Anzacs - Australians and New Zealenders and Senegalese) from capturing the Dardanelles and eventually Bosphorus.

History of Marmaris
The magnificent coastline of the Turkish Riviera has attracted many conquerors in its time. Marmaris has been ruled by the Egyptians, Syrians, Romans, Byzantines and the Ottomans. Traces of all these civilizations can be found surrounding our town. The first settlement of Marmaris was called Physkos and is still being excavated by archaeologists today. The ruins are known as Asartepe. Legend has it that Suleyman the Magnificent ordered the castle in Marmaris to be enlarged. He then travelled to Rhodes and upon his return found it was still too small for his liking and ordered his men to "mirmari" which means hang the architect! The Tomb of Sariana
On the Northeastern slopes of the city behind the neighboring Sariana is the newly built Mosque which stands next to a tomb. Renowned for its oracular powers, the tomb was visited by Suleyman the Magnificent during his journey to Rhodes. Following good news from the Oracle, the Sultan decided to lay siege to the Island. It was known that the breakfast of the Ottoman Legions consisted of fresh milk, milked from Sariana's famed cow. The Kervansaray
Surrounded by arches, this structure is built of stone and is in Ottoman style. Built in 1545, the Kervansaray contains 1 large and 7 small rooms. Today it is used as a shopping center for souvenirs

History: The Byzantine State never fully recovered and on many occasions during the next 3 centuries, a final defeat was only prevented by the disunity of its enemies and particularly by the massive fortifications of the city of Constantinople. The conquest of Constantinople in 1204 – the only time the fortifications were breached – was followed by one of the most savage and rapacious sackings in the history of the world. The treasures of Byzantium were beyond count or value and many priceless works of art were removed to Europe (mainly to Venice) during this time. The Byzantines set up a rival capital at Nicea, until Constantinople was retaken in 1261. By this time, however, the empire had effectively lost control of most of its territories and, by the 14th century, Byzantine control of Asia Minor was little more than an empty theory. From the 11th century onwards, the Asiatic area of Turkey known as Anatolia had also been affected by upheavals and conquests from the east. Successive invasions from Central Asia led to the Islamic Turkification of the region, the real power fast becoming the Ottomans’ – a name derived from their 14th-century leader, Osman Gazi, who scored a decisive victory against the Byzantines at the Battle of Baphaeon in 1301. The Ottomans steadily expanded their territorial control from Turkey itself, constructing the Ottoman Empire, which at its zenith in the mid-16th century – a period associated with the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent – covered southeast Europe (including the Balkans and Hungary), North Africa (as far as Morocco), the Crimea and Georgia, the Levant, Syria, Iraq and most of the Arabian peninsula. The most famous conquest, from a symbolic and strategic point of view, was that of Constantinople itself in 1453; with its fall, the Roman Empire, in a strictly legalistic sense, finally came to an end. The territorial ambitions of the Ottomans regarding control of the Mediterranean and Central Europe brought the empire into conflict with the major European powers of the day, particularly the Hapsburgs.

The modern Turkish statebeginning with the creation of the Republic of Turkey in the years immediately after World War Idrew on a national consciousness that had developed only in the late nineteenth century. But the history of nomadic Turkish tribes can be traced with certainty to the sixth century A.D., when they wandered the steppes of central Asia. Asia Minor, which the Turks invaded in the eleventh century, has a recorded history that dates back to the Hittites, who flourished there in the second millennium B.C. Archaeological evidence of far older cultures has been found in the region, however. The term Turkey , although sometimes used to signify the Ottoman Empire, was not assigned to a specific political entity or geographic area until the republic was founded in 1923. The conquering Turks called Asia Minor, the large peninsular territory they had wrested from the Byzantine Empire, by its Greek name, Anatolé (sunrise; figuratively, the East), or Anatolia. The term Anatolia is also used when events described affected both that region and Turkish Thrace ("Turkey-in-Europe") because of the two areas' closely linked political, social, and cultural development. Anatolia is a bridge connecting the Middle East and Europe, and it shares in the history of both those parts of the world. Despite the diversity of its peoples and their cultures, and the constantly shifting borders of its ethnic map, Anatolia has a history characterized by remarkable continuity. Wave after wave of conquerors and settlers have imposed their language and other unique features of their culture on it, but they also have invariably assimilated the customs of the peoples who preceded them.

Starting from the Establishment of the Ottoman Empire The First World War and the Mondros Cease-Fire Agreement The Ottomans joined the First World War in 1914 as a result of fait accompli. During the war, the empire suffered a loss of four hundred thousand casualties and being defeated by the Allies, signed an armistice at Mondros on October 30, 1918. Following this armistice, the Ottomans were forced to sign the Sevres Treaty on August 10, 1920 which aimed at dividing the lands of the empire. The Turkish nation in protest to the Mondros Armistice and the Sevres Treaty started its War of Liberation under the command of Mustafa Kemal Atat¼rk. After the victory, the Turkish Grand National Assembly in Ankara abolished the office of the Sultan on November 1, 1922, thus ending 631 years of Ottoman rule in the world. Efforts to Disintegrate the Empire Subversive Organizations Shortly after the Mondros Treaty, many organizations and societies appeared which were against national independence. Besides such pro-Ottoman and caliphate societies as the "Sulh ve Selameti Osmaniye Firkasi (Peace and Ottoman Salvation Party), the "Teali Islam Cemiyeti" (Moslem Promotion Society), the "H¼rriyet ve Itilaf Firkasi" (Liberty and Entente Party), there were other societies of the minorities such as the "Mavrimira" and the "Pontus Society". Their subversive activities during the First World War continued after the Treaty in order to prevent Turks from establishing a Notional State in Anatolia.

CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION, TURKEY The name "Turkey" only came into effect in 1923 after the Turkish War of Independence (1920 to 1922) when the Turkish population, inspired by their leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, successfully fought against division. The "Treaty of Lausanne" signed in 1923, secured the territorial boundaries and independence of Turkey and on 29th October 1923, Turkey was proclaimed a Republic with Ataturk as her first predident. It is important to mention here that the enormous landmass that represents the body of Turkey today was formerly known as ANATOLIA and regarded as the 'cradle of civilization'. Anatolia, an immense expanse of highlands and mountain ranges sloping gently to the sea in the west, has been inhabited since the dawn of man. The area has served throughout history as a land bridge joining the continents of Europe and Asia over which the migrations of peoples have flowed uninterruptedly. Its influence on the development of western civilizations has been prominent.

Lycia’s History - A Struggle For Freedom The history of Lycia is a story of fierce struggles against those who sought to invade and dominate it, as it was a very desireable region. It appears that Greek efforts to colonize Lycia during the first millennium B.C. were largely unsuccessful even though there were s everal Athenian expeditions, including the famous one under Melesander in 430 BC. The Greeks were able to establish only one important colony in Lycia, Phaselis. The first recorded instance of Lycian resistance fighting occurred around 540 BC when the Persians overran all Asia Minor. The Persians attacked the Lycian capital city of Xanthos and the Xanthosians put up a heroic fight. In the end however, they chose mass suicide over surrender. The men of Xanthos gathered their wives, children and possessions in the acropolis and set fire to all before rushing out fighting to die to the last man. Herodotus of Halicarnassos reports: "The Persian Army entered the plain of Xanthos under the command of Harpagos, and did battle with the Xanthians. The Xanthians fought with small numbers against the superior Persians forces, with legendary bravery. They resisted the endless Persian forces with great courage, but were finally beaten, their womenfolk, children, slaves and treasures into the fortress. This was then set on fire from, below and around the walls , until destroyed by conflagration. Then the warriors of Xanthos made their final attack on the Persians, their voices raised in calls of war, until every last man from Xanthos was killed."

Quick to denounce the Middle Eastern mind-frame as well as the European, the GNA closed all religious schools and convents, and later the mosques, sparking the Kurdish Revolt of 1925. By 1926, the Turkish Holy Law and Religious Endowments was replaced by the Swiss Civil Code. Turkey adopted the Roman script, completely cutting its ties to the Middle East by abandoning cumbersome Arabic writing. bodyOffer(21297) In 1924, a Progressive Republican Party was formed by dissidents of the People's Party, the party of Kemal Ataturk. But by 1925, the Progressive Republican Party was disbanded. Following an assassination attempt on Kemal Ataturk in 1926, the leading members of the former PRP were either executed or exiled. Later, in 1929, Ataturk led a revolt against the Maintenance of Public Order Law, which had exiled party members in 1928. In 1938, the Turkish flag lowered in honor of Mustafa Kemal, known since 1924 as Kemal Ataturk. The final assassination attempt had succeeded in claiming the life of the proclaimed "Father of the Turks". A long-time opposition of Ataturk's, Inonu, became President of the Republic. Shortly after the assassination of Ataturk, the Turkish people bent under strict political leadership not unlike the censored, Stalinized Soviet Union. In the outbreak of World War II, Turkey was faced with another set of crises. While the political machines of Turkey had become fascinated with the prospect of aiding Nazi Germany, the people had discovered the freedom of democracy present in most of Western Europe, but not yet introduced to the Turkish people. During the course of the War, Turkey remained divided; people against government. Only when it became clear that the Allies would win did Turkey's more liberal side show itself. The final Allied victory, in fact, was the turning point of Turkey's governmental system. Democracy flourished, opening new doors of escapefrom the regime of the Middle Eastern way of life. But democracy, to a country that had never known of it before, spilled out of control.
