Turkey's government : from 1919 to 1990
An overview of Turkey's government after the initial fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1919.
Quick to denounce the Middle Eastern mind-frame as well as the European, the GNA closed all religious schools and convents, and later the mosques, sparking the Kurdish Revolt of 1925. By 1926, the Turkish Holy Law and Religious Endowments was replaced by the Swiss Civil Code. Turkey adopted the Roman script, completely cutting its ties to the Middle East by abandoning cumbersome Arabic writing. bodyOffer(22975) In 1924, a Progressive Republican Party was formed by dissidents of the People's Party, the party of Kemal Ataturk. But by 1925, the Progressive Republican Party was disbanded. Following an assassination attempt on Kemal Ataturk in 1926, the leading members of the former PRP were either executed or exiled. Later, in 1929, Ataturk led a revolt against the Maintenance of Public Order Law, which had exiled party members in 1928. In 1938, the Turkish flag lowered in honor of Mustafa Kemal, known since 1924 as Kemal Ataturk. The final assassination attempt had succeeded in claiming the life of the proclaimed "Father of the Turks". A long-time opposition of Ataturk's, Inonu, became President of the Republic. Shortly after the assassination of Ataturk, the Turkish people bent under strict political leadership not unlike the censored, Stalinized Soviet Union. In the outbreak of World War II, Turkey was faced with another set of crises. While the political machines of Turkey had become fascinated with the prospect of aiding Nazi Germany, the people had discovered the freedom of democracy present in most of Western Europe, but not yet introduced to the Turkish people. During the course of the War, Turkey remained divided; people against government. Only when it became clear that the Allies would win did Turkey's more liberal side show itself. The final Allied victory, in fact, was the turning point of Turkey's governmental system. Democracy flourished, opening new doors of escapefrom the regime of the Middle Eastern way of life. But democracy, to a country that had never known of it before, spilled out of control.

The Kardak Dispute
On January 28, 1996, the Government of Greece issued bellicose statements regarding the status of the Kardak Rocks, a mere 3.8 miles off the coast of Turkey in the Aegean Sea. This is yet another example of unfounded Greek claims to sovereignty even at 3.8 miles and results from long-standing bilateral disputes concerning the Aegean, including territorial waters, demilitarization of the Aegean islands, air space and the continental shelf. Turkey is committed to defusing, rather than increasing, tension in this region. The dispute over the Kardak Rocks and other small islands and islets in the region, as well as the delimitation of the territorial waters, is an ongoing one. In creating a problem by extending its sovereignty to the islands beyond those ceded to Athens in 1947, Greece is acting irresponsibly by increasing tensions for domestic political consumption and by trying to involve others in the international community in the fray. It is obvious that the possession of small islands, islets and rocks in the Aegean the status of which have not been clearly defined by international documents has yet to be determined by agreement. Therefore, attempts by Greece to inhabit the small islands, islets and rocks in question, in an artificial and demonstrative fashion, can in no way create any legal consequences in regard to their status.

US airforce plane prepares to take off from Incirlik
By BBC's Nick Thorpe at the Incirlik airbase in southern Turkey. The Turkish Government has agreed to a US request to use its airspace and airports for any military response to last Tuesday's terror attacks. As a Muslim country and frontline Nato member, Turkish strategic importance has grown significantly since last Tuesday. There are about a dozen grey American and British fighter aircraft and transport planes standing in the shimmering heat on the runway at the Nato base at Incirlik. They are used on a daily basis to patrol the no-fly zone over northern Iraq imposed after the Gulf War 10 years ago.
Turkey will increase the equipment, training and other assistance that it has been giving to the [anti-Taleban] Northern Alliance.
Government statement But the importance of this base and of other civilian and military airports in Turkey could now grow.

Turkey's Islamic-rooted government surprises skeptics
Erdogan, leader of an Islamic-rooted party, has avoided confronting Turkey's secularists. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Follow the news that matters to you. ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) When Turkey's prime minister showed up last week at a reception held by President Ahmed Necdet Sezer, he came without his wife, and thus demonstrated how different from fears his first year in office has been. His wife wears a head scarf, which Sezer, an avowed secularist, regards as a symbol of female Muslim militancy. So he had decreed that political wives who wear them should not be invited. Many angry husbands boycotted the affair, but Recep Tayyip Erdogan uttered barely a murmur of protest. His restraint is indicative of the pragmatism Erdogan has brought to the job, dispelling fears that his Islamic-rooted party's huge election victory a year ago Monday would inject Muslim ideology into the bloodstream of constitutionally secular Turkey. Instead, Erdogan has taken pains to avoid confronting the secular establishment that had already driven an Islamic-oriented government out of power in 1997. He has steered clear of religion and focused on the nation's most pressing priorities fixing the economy and getting Turkey into the European Union.
