(New York, January 9, 2001) Human Rights Watch today condemned the Turkish government's crackdown on those seeking to expose torture, beatings and other police abuses during the violent December raid of Turkish prisons. The December 19 military prisoner transfer operation took place in twenty Turkish prisons. In the transfer, thirty prisoners and two gendarmes were killed. Government Accused of a Cover-Up to Protect Deputy Prime Minister Tansu Ciller
ANKARA, Turkey (April 9, 1997, Associate Press) Two members of a parliamentary commission that investigated governmental links to the underworld accused fellow panelists on Wednesday of a cover-up to protect Deputy Prime Minister Tansu Ciller. Releasing their own report on the four-month probe, the dissenters charged that the government pressured the nine-member commission into rescinding an order for Ciller to testify. The panel first voted to summon Ciller, then backed down. ``The government ... put pressure on Welfare (Party) deputies to reverse their stands on summoning'' Ciller, the two opposition parliamentarians said in their report. The Islamic Welfare Party joined forces with Ciller's pro-Western True Path Party in July to form a ruling coalition. Since then, Welfare legislators have voted against starting corruption probes that involve Ciller. Several True Path deputies are embroiled in a political-underworld scandal, which came to light after a traffic accident in November. Sedat Bucak, a Parliament member from True Path, was the sole survivor. A fugitive terrorist and a police chief, both of whom were in Bucak's car, were killed.

Turkey government proposes higher taxes to deal with quake

By PAUL GEITNER
Associated Press
ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - The Istanbul stock exchange plummeted today on its first day of trading since an earthquake devastated the country's industrial heartland, and Turks questioned government plans to raise taxes to repair damage. ``We Don't Trust'' the state, the daily Radikal said in the headline of a story that questioned whether the new tax money would be funneled to contractors tied to political parties. Many Turks claim the high death toll, which reached 13,009 today with 26,000 injured, is in part due to shoddy construction by contractors who paid off officials to ignore building codes. Parliament's budgetary committee approved a proposal late Wednesday that would raise taxes and impose extra charges on mobile phone calls. The plans must now be approved by the full assembly. The Hurriyet newspaper reported that some customers were returning their cellular phones following the proposal of a new 25 percent surcharge on monthly bills. It did not say how many customers had returned their phones. Cigarette and alcohol taxes are also expected to rise from 15 percent to 23 percent.

Turkey is developing into a hot emerging market. The government is actively seeking out foreign investors on huge privatization programs in the fields of energy, telecommunications and infrastructure projects. The Turkish Constitution has also been amended to allow for international arbitration- a previous lack that had scared off potential investors. All in all, the situation is becoming increasingly favorable. Turkey ~ The Day of the Attacks - Good Sign for the Future Leanne Currie-McGhee was in Turkey with her husband the day of the terrorist attacks on the WTC and Washington. She writes, "I learned the true meaning of 'Turkish hospitality' during the aftermath of the tragic terrorist attack on the United States. My husband Keith and I discovered how kind and compassionate the Turkish people are when we visited the city of Konya, located in the central Anatolia region. Konya is a devoutly Muslim city." Over the past year, Leanne and her husband have been traveling the not so beaten paths of South Asia, Africa, Australia, and SW Asia. Their travels have shown them a compassionate world exists where people of all beliefs choose the path of peace.
