It is one of the rare countries that can take you away from it all, thanks to its authentic culture. And it's only a 3-hours' flight from Paris. Turkey has a comprehensive, efficient and modern infrastructure, but if you want to do something really different, it also offers its thousand-year-old history reflected in marvellous sites full of charm and preserved from mass tourism.
'A Holiday in Turkey' is an amateur site whose only ambition is to make you discover and love Turkey. We may have made mistakes, so please feel free to send us an e-mail if you find any.

Assyrian Education Network Assyrians in Turkey: Disappearance of a Culture? by Dr. Racho Donef — Assyrians After Assyria Conference, July 2, 2000. Posted: Friday, August 25, 2000 at 02:32 PM CT Last year, as some of you may know, a conference entitled "Portraits of Christian Asia Minor" was held at Macquarie University. The Conference was attended by the Turkish Consul who, reportedly, after the conference requested a meeting with Senator John Nimrod, from the U.S., who is also, President of the Assyrian Universal Alliance. The Consul expressed his regret for what had happened in the past, explaining that the Turks are trying to turn a new page with the Assyrians. He advised that he is personally working to establish contact and good relations with the Assyrians.[ I am reporting this here because I think it is important that a representative of the Turkish government expresses these thoughts, and I thought it would be preferable to start on a positive note. Nevertheless, no major changes have been noted in the Turkish government’s attitude towards the Assyrian since then. Before we examine the situation of the Assyrians-Surianis in Turkey, it is important to first look at the political and policy framework in which they lived. When the Turkish Republic was established in 1923 the new state inherited a mosaic of ethnic groups. With the exception of the Kurds, none of the ethnic minorities showed any political aspirations. The number of Arabs in Turkey remained small until the annexation of Hatay by Turkey, in 1939, and the smaller Muslim groups, such the Lazes and Circassians, had neither the desire for territorial independence nor the capacity to attain it.

Eastern Anatolia Destruction on Field Only in Turkish) Informant Line Only in Turkish) The TAY Archeological Settlements of Turkey Project has been designed to build a chronological inventory of findings about the cultural heritage of Turkey - an important component of the world cultural heritage - and to share this information with the international community. Although Anatolia and Thrace hold cultural traces dating back at least 400,000 years, neither the results of early investigations that started in the first half of the 19th century, nor the data generated by current surveys and excavations are well organized or easily accessible. Locations of many sites are unknown, and many of them have been destroyed or are being destroyed at this very moment. The most important step we have to take to stop this process is to collect and compile cultural heritage information to establish a central inventory: if we can not document, we can not protect. With this project, all archaeological settlements of Turkey (mounds, monuments, tumuli, cemeteries, etc.) are being thoroughly documented.

But the real St. Nicholas lived in a warm, sunny town on the Mediterranean Sea in what is now Turkey.
St. Nicholas was born in the town of Patara in 245 A.D. When he was young, his father died and left Nicholas a great fortune. Instead of spending it on himself, Nicholas started anonymously giving the money to the needy, especially children.
Nicholas eventually became the Bishop of Myra (modern-day Demre in Turkey), where he performed several miracles, including saving sailors from drowning and resurrecting three boys who had been killed by an evil butcher. Today, St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children, sailors, teachers, students and merchants. As the Bush Administration's push for war against Iraq gains momentum, the people of Turkey get more and more uneasy. Bridging the landscape between Europe and Asia, Turkey shares part of its southern border with Iraq. This puts them uncomfortably close to the battle zone, making the Turkish nation a political and strategic hot spot. Already, its location has significantly affected talks among NATO members, as Turkey knows such a war would severely undermine the nation's vitality with the imminent waves of refugees and loss of tourism and trading dollars. Although this nation suffered violent skirmishes between local rebels and Turkish authorities in 1999, along with some negative effects from U.S. air strikes on Afghanistan since 2001, those impacts would likely pale in comparison to the fallout from a U.S. war on Iraq. With Turkey's long history and rich culture, it's no wonder they're nervous over what they risk losing. Located between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, for millennia this region has thrived as a trading and cultural center. Travelers can see signs of its past from its ancient fortresses and mosques to its spice bazaars to its arts, and to its mix of traditional and contemporary lifestyles. In this week's lesson you'll be traveling to Turkey to take in the sights, history and culture of this region. So grab your gear, and let's get going!

Turkey Accuses Saudis Over Culture
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 1:47 p.m. ET ANKARA, Turkey (AP) Turkey's culture minister accused Saudi Arabia on Monday of engaging in a ``cultural massacre'' of Ottoman treasures after Saudi authorities tore down a 200-year-old castle in Mecca to make way for a hotel complex. Saudi authorities demolished the al-Ajyad Castle, along with other buildings in a Mecca neighborhood close to holy shrines in the city, a few weeks ago to allow for the construction of a trade center and hotel to accommodate Muslim pilgrims. Turkey's Culture Minister Istemihan Talay said his country was lodging a protest with UNESCO the U.N. agency responsible for the preservation of cultural relics to force an international condemnation of Saudi Arabia. ``This is a crime against humanity, and UNESCO should expose this disgraceful and ugly destruction and cultural massacre,'' Talay told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. A Saudi diplomat in Ankara said the embassy had no immediate response but may issue a statement later. Officials in Saudi Arabia could not be reached for comment. Talay said ``there is a similarity between the Taliban's destruction of the Buddha statues in Afghanistan and the Saudi authorities' enmity toward this legacy of the Ottoman era.''

Turkish Carpets
Carpet weaving has long traditions in Turkey. Turkish carpets are of excellent quality and design and are rivalled only by Persian carpets. This page will look at the carpet weaving tradition among the peoples of Turkey and Central Asia: how the carpets are made, what determines their value, and some of the historical and cultural context within which this folk art has blossomed.

Marco Polo noted the fine quality of Turkish carpets in his writings in 1271. A large number of Turkish and Persian carpets were being sent to Europe as early as the 16th century. The increased trade relations with Europe and the strong western orientation of some of the Ottoman emperors clearly influenced some production and designs. Still, carpet weaving has been around a very long time and is an established tradition in the fabric of life in the carpet producing areas of Turkey, Persia, Turkestan and the Caucasus.
The 1949 discovery of the Pazryk carpets established that carpet weaving has existed in the area at least since the 4th century BC. Historically, the Turks moved to present day Anatolia from Central Asia, their carpet weaving traditions following them westward to Turkey and Persia, where they ultimately reached their highest expression. Similarly, influences from the Far East reached Europe primarily through Constantinople, which was the gateway to Europe as well being the final stop in the so called Silk Route, the long trade route that ran from China through Central Asia to Anatolia.

It may be divided into the subheadings of folk music and Ottoman music. http://www.kultur.gov.tr/portal/sanat_tr.asp?belgeno=35589 Contemporary Classical Turkish Music Towards the middle of the 19th century, Ottoman music came under the influence of the Western classical tradition, which had by the turn of the century acquired a key role in the transformation of the earlier heavily monophonic structure into a polyphonic one. During the Republican period, the themes of traditional Turkish music became embedded in the musical values of the Western classical tradition and the genre developed a modern polyphonic structure. http://www.kultur.gov.tr/portal/sanat_tr.asp?belgeno=19773

Art ... Music First impressions of Turkey reveal a society much more European than one expects, but echoes of a strong and proud heritage shine through in the arts, culture, music, and folklore. Tourists flock to those "Turkish Nights" shows expecting to cram in a few hours' worth of "authentic" folklore. But while a belly dancer in a glittery harem hat may seem the epitome of exoticism, this ritual crowd-pleasure is anything but a Turkish invention. Turkish culture developed by absorbing the artistic traditions of conquered lands, so more than any one defining style, Turkish art is characterized by layers and layers of civilizations. From the time the Turkish tribes spread through Anatolia in the 11th century until the end of the Ottoman Empire, the Turks had incorporated decorative and architectural styles from the Sassanids (a pre-Islamic Persian dynasty), the Romans, the early Christians, the Byzantines, and Renaissance-era Europeans.
