62. Moon And Stars Project
A nonprofit organization dedicated to highlighting the changing face of Turkish arts and culture and establishing a two-way cultural interaction between the United States and turkey.
http://www.moonandstarsproject.org/
The Moon and Stars Project was founded in 2001 in New York. It is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to highlighting the changing face of Turkish arts and culture and establishing a two-way cultural interaction between the United States and Turkey. Growing out of MayFest, a month-long festival first started in May 1999, the Moon and Stars Project is now an organization that presents year-round programs. Our initiatives have drawn an outpouring of support from the community, both in the United States and in Turkey, and from local and international organizations. Each year we have grown as an organization and initiated more ambitious programs and events. What started out as a little festival has come a long way.
There are times when current events and the headlines of our day make us question what we are doing, what our goals are, and how we can make the world a better place, even if that means by taking tiny little steps that often seem insignificant. As our mission statement declares, we are devoted as an institution to promoting greater cultural interaction between the United States and Turkey and dedicated to fostering mutual tolerance, understanding, and respect between different nations, cultures, and religions. With all that is going on in the world, we hope you will agree that this mission is more important than ever. We would like to think of our programs which incorporate the visual arts, theater, film, traditional and contemporary music, project sponsorships and grants, as baby steps - but important ones at that - which reminds us of the importance of the arts since we can only begin to understand one another through artistic expression. The stories we heard growing up, songs and compositions that bridge musical and cultural worlds, films that explore themes surrounding human experiences, dramas, and emotions, and artists that hold a mirror up to society and comment on this crazy, wonderful world we live in. It is this type of artistic expression that sets the Moon and Stard Project apart. And it is through such expression that others can begin to understand us, and, perhaps, we ourselves.

F or more than 30 years Turkey has been constructing over 100 dams in southeast Anatolia, both to help solve the energy crisis and to provide the irrigation water necessary for regional development. One of these dams is being built on the Euphrates River. Called the Bireçik dam, after the nearby town of Bireçik, it has caused the inundation of the outskirts of Zeugma, an ancient town 800 metres away. Turkish and foreign archaeologists have worked on rescue excavations in this town, which is famous for its mosaics, but smugglers had already put Zeugma on the map long before either the dam or the archaeologists. The plundering of mosaics from Zeugma stretches back as far as the nineteenth century. One of the most important of these is a panel depicting the sea god Poseidon surrounded by personifications of Roman provinces within medallions. This mosaic is currently on exhibition, in pieces, in St Petersburg and Berlin. Then, for the last 13 years, archaeologists from Gaziantep Museum have been forced to undertake sporadic rescue excavations in response to illegal digging and smuggling. Attributions used in various museum catalogues to describe the origins of mosaics, such as 'East Mediterranean', 'near Syria', 'said to be from East Turkey' probably, in fact, refer to Zeugma. For example, there is the second-century AD mosaic in the North Carolina Museum of Art, said to be 'probably from East Turkey'.

Cappadocia History. Cappadocia - this very special area - was formedmany millions of years ago when it experienced fierce volcanic
    http://www.mideasttravelling.net/turkey/cappadocia2/cappadocia2_history.htm
Cappadocia - H istory Cappadocia - this very special area - was formed many millions of years ago when it experienced fierce volcanic activity with lava, ash and basalt being thrown far and wide. From this beginning, the region evolved situated on a plateau formed by the accumulation of volcanic ash. This slowly over millions of years developed into "tufa" - the surface of this became hard on contact with the air whilst the interior remained soft. As time passed and erosion took place these very unusual structures were formed with the softer parts being eroded whilst the harder tops remained, hence the formation of the "fairy chimneys" which are seen today. The history of Cappadocia dates back to 3500- 4000 years ago. The first people to settle in the area made their homes in caves that stay cool in the summer months and retain the heat and stay warm in the winter. Because the climate of Cappadocia is so extreme and the winters so harsh the caves make perfect houses and for this reason they have been used for thousands of years, and are still used today. What's more, the climate in the caves only varies a few degrees through the year, making for a healthy living environment. Cappadocia makes its first entrance into history courtesy of Heroditus, writing in the 5thCentury BC but it is with the advent of Christianity that it becomes of interest to the average contemporary tourist. Christianity came early to the region with St. Paul passing through on his way to Ancyra (Ankara) and 3 Saints originating here in the 4th Century.

    Flag of Turkey Background:
Turkey is often called "the cradle of civilization," as it has been home to a rich variety of tribes and nations of people since 6500 B.C.
The Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, replacing the dynastic and theocratic Ottoman system, with its Sultanate and Caliphate. The Republic is based on a secular democratic, pluralist and parilamentary system.
In 1945 Turkey joined the UN and in 1952 it became a member of NATO. Turkey occupied the northern portion of Cyprus in 1974 to prevent a Greek takeover of the island; relations between the two countries remain strained. Periodic military offensives against Kurdish separatists have dislocated part of the population in southeast Turkey and have drawn international condemnation. In recent years, Turkey has become a major tourist destination in Europe. (Source: Various sources) border countries: Armenia Azerbaijan Bulgaria Georgia ... The culture of Turkey draws customs from the Ottoman Empire and the Islamic traditions, modernised primarily by Kemal Atatürk and his " Neoturks " movement. The Kurdish Greek Armenian and other non-Turk populations which still exist in Turkey may follow different customs. Today Turkey is leaning more towards the "American way". This article is a stub . Introduction
Check your Midnight Express stereotypes at the door - this is a rapidly modernising country with one foot in Europe and one in the Middle East. It's not all oriental splendour, mystery, intrigue and whirling dervishes but it is a spicy maelstrom of history knocking up against a pacy present. The Turkish people have an unrivalled reputation for hospitality, the cuisine is to die for, the coastline is a dream, and many Turkish cities are dotted with spectacular mosques and castles. And while costs are rising, Turkey remains the Mediterranean's bargain-basement destination. There's an enormous variety of things to see and do ranging from water sports to mountain trekking, archaeology to night-clubbing and river rafting to raki drinking. Whether you leave Turkey with magnificent carpets, amulets to ward off evil, belly-dancing tips, an appreciation of its history, or just a tan, you're likely to want to go back for more.
    Warning
Turkey is generally safe, but domestic and regional tensions equate to occasional waves of low-level violence, especially bombings. On 16 May, 2004, four percussion bombs exploded outside HSBC banks in Istanbul and Ankara, harking back to late 2003, when Istanbul was rocked by a series of bombings in which a synagogue, a bank and the British consulate were targeted.
