History
Tunisia may be the smallest country in North Africa, but its strategic position has ensured it an eventful history. The Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Ottomans and French have all picked at the region at one point. The earliest humans to set foot here were probably a group of Homo erectus who stumbled onto the place a few hundred thousand years ago as they joined north-west across the Sahara from East Africa. It's believed that in those days what is now arid desert was covered in forest, scrub and savanna grasses, much like the plains of Kenya and Tanzania today. The earliest hard evidence of human inhabitation was unearthed near the southern oasis town of Kebili and dates back about 200,000 years. The Phoenicians first set up shop in Tunisia at Utica in 1100 BC, using it as a staging post along the route from their home port of Tyre (in modern-day Lebanon) to Spain. They went on to establish a chain of ports along the North African coast, the most important of which included Hadrum¨tum (Sousse) and Hippo Diarrhytus (Bizerte). But the port that looms largest in history books is Carthage, arch enemy of Rome. It became the leader of the western Phoenician world in the 7th century and the main power in the Western Mediterranean in the early 5th century. The city's regional dominance lasted until the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage, which began in 263 BC and ended in 146 BC with Carthage utterly razed and its people sold into slavery.

Tunisia History (PDF 113 kb) Pre-Colonial History Tunisia was called Ifriqiyah in the early centuries of the Islamic period. That name, in turn, comes from the Roman word for Africa and the name also given by the Romans to their first African colony following the Punic Wars against the Carthaginians in 264-146 BC. After brief periods of rule by the Vandals and Byzantines, the Arabs conquered the area in AD 647. Although the Arabs initially unified North Africa, by 1230 a separate Tunisian dynasty had been established by the Hafsids. Muslim Andalusians migrated to the area after having been forced out of Spain in 1492. By 1574, Tunisia was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire, which lasted until 1922. Tunisia is the smallest of the Maghreb states and consequently the most cohesive. By the beginning of the 19th century virtually all of its inhabitants spoke Arabic. Berber, the earlier language of the Maghreb, survived in Tunisia in only a few pockets, especially in the extreme south. The vast majority of the population was Muslim, with a small Jewish minority. A single major city, Tunis, dominated the countryside both politically and culturally. Tunis itself was located near the site of the earlier Carthage. More easily controlled from within than any other Maghreb country, Tunisia was also more open to the influence of people and ideas from abroad. Roman Africa, for example, was the most intensively Christianized portion of North Africa, and Ifriqiyah was later more quickly and more thoroughly Islamicized.

Tunisia History
The area known today as Tunisia has seen a long line of invaders and conquerors. In the 8th century BC, the Phoenicians, maritime traders from present-day Lebanon, founded Carthage. The powerful city-state first traded with and then ruled North Africa and modern-day Sicily, Sardinia and parts of Spain. The Roman Empire conquered Carthage in 146 BC and razed the city. Nearly 500 years later, the Vandals swept across northern Africa, ousted the Romans and ruled in their stead. A century of Vandal domination ended when the Byzantine armies kicked them out. The next invasion was the one that has left the most lasting influence. After the death of the prophet Muhammad, Arab armies pushed from the Middle East into North Africa. Kairouan, the first major Islamic city in the Maghreb, was founded in AD 671 and became the capital of Ifriqiyya. The Fatimids, a Berber Shiite group, gained control in the early 10th century and founded a new city, Mahdia, as their capital. (The Fatimids also later founded Cairo.) In the 16th century, Tunisia became part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1881, the country came under French control.

The Romans, followed by the Vandals and the Byzantines, all desired Tunisia. Islam spread here in the seventh century and led to the country's emergence as an important Islamic center. In 1574, the Ottomans made Tunisia part of their empire, ruling from Constantinople. Tunisia became French protectorate in 1881 and by the 20th century, nationalist movements began to surface. Their activities subsided during World War II, when Allied and Axis powers fought here, but resumed after the war. By the 1950s, it was clear that French control was coming to an end and independence was declared in 1956. Habib Bourguiba's New Constitution party took control of the government in 1957; he himself was named president for life in 1959. He was overthrown, however, in 1987. The stability of Tunisia has been challenged by radical Islamic groups in Tunisia and Algeria.

Independence came in 1956, and President Habib Bourguiba, a ruler in the strongman tradition, led the country until he was removed from office in 1987 at the age of 83. The government, now headed by Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali, has continued Bourguiba's mixture of political autocracy and social liberalization. Because freedom of the press has been virtually eliminated in the country, and because thousands of fundamentalist Islamic dissidents have been jailed, it is difficult to determine whether the government is really that popular, or whether it has effectively stifled opposition. Nevertheless, the country has enjoyed relative stability for decades.

European Influence and Nationalist Aspirations
In the 19th cent. the heavy debts that the beys had contracted gave European powers cause for intervention. France, Great Britain, and Italy took over Tunisia's finances in 1869. A number of incidents, including attacks by Tunisians on Algeria (a French possession since 1830), led to a French invasion of Tunisia. The bey was forced to sign the treaties of Bardo (1881) and Mersa (1883), which provided for the organization of a protectorate under a French resident general. The protectorate was opposed by Italy, which had economic interests and a sizable group of nationals in Tunisia. Italy's attitude grew increasingly belligerent, and, in the years immediately preceding World War I, threats of annexation were made.
