Position :

Tunisia is located in the extreme north-east of Africa, in the center of the Mediterranean basin. Tunisia, marked off by the thirtieth and the thirty-seventh degrees of north latitude, is washed in the north and in the east by the Mediterranean.
Relief :
Mountainous and very green in the north, the country becomes progressively lower and drier towards the south. We distinguish three major parts:
  • The High-Tell which covers the north part,
  • The Central Tunisia, region of High and Low steppes ending on the coast by the Sahel,
  • Finally, the meridian Tunisia, determined in the north by the region of the Chotts. It's the country of the great desert spaces, luxuriant palm groves crouched around the few water points.

The highest point of Tunisia, Jebel Chaambi, does not accede 1.544 metres and the two third of the country are made up by plains.

Tunisie, officially Republic of Tunisia, republic (1995 est. pop. 8,880,000), 63,378 sq mi (164,150 sq km), NW Africa, bordered by Algeria (W), the Mediterranean Sea (N and E), and Libya (SE). Tunis is the capital. The Atlas Mountains in the north form a dry plateau that merges with fertile plains near the coast; in the south, below the Chott Djerid and other salt lakes, stretches the Sahara desert. The irregular coastline has several fine harbors. Agriculture, mining, energy, tourism, and manufacturing are all important to the economy. Wheat, barley, grapes, olives, sugar beets, citrus fruits, and dates are the leading crops, and petroleum and phosphates are the principal minerals. Manufactured goods include textiles, steel, and processed food. The population is largely Berber and Arab, and Islam is the dominant religion. Arabic is the official language, although French is widely spoken. History
