INTRODUCTION
Tunisia, a melting-pot of different civilizations, has always had a rich cultural activity, as testified by its prestigious museums and cultural institutions and by the various international festivals held throughout the year. Sustained efforts have been deployed to promote the cultural sector. The Heritage Code grants companies important tax breaks to encourage investments in restoration and protection of archaeological monuments (e.g. Cathedral of Carthage;) promulgation of legal texts allows free importation of books and paper destined for cultural purposes and the exemption from customs duties of musical instruments.
INSTITUTIONS
A whole strategy has been put in place to set up institutions serving as points of reference in the various domains of cultural activity. Among them, the National Dance Center of Borj El Baccouche, the House of Baron d'Erlanger converted into a Center for Arab and Mediterranean Music, and the Husseinite Museum (covering the period of the Beys) in the Palace of Ksar Said.
Other projects are in the process of completion, such as the Museum of Modern Art, located at the Palace of El Abdellia, and the National Cultural Center of Tunis. In addition, the International Cultural Center of Hammamet has been refurbished and transformed into the House of the Mediterranean, specializing mainly in theatrical arts. The institution of "Beit el Hikma" was converted into an Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in order to better contribute to the cultural and intellectual activity of Tunisia. The academy also welcomes distinguished scholars wishing to conduct research in various fields and serves as a meeting place for debates and exchanges between researchers, scholars and artists.

Tunisia History and Culture
History In the earliest known period of its history, the region now called Tunisia was part of the Carthaginian Empire. According to tradition, Phoenician traders founded the city of Carthage in 814 BC at a location slightly northeast of the site of modern Tunis. In subsequent centuries Carthage became the center of a mighty empire that dominated most of northern Africa and intermittently ruled the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, Sardinia, and parts of Sicily.

Tunisie, officially Republic of Tunisia, republic (1995 est. pop. 8,880,000), 63,378 sq mi (164,150 sq km), NW Africa, bordered by Algeria (W), the Mediterranean Sea (N and E), and Libya (SE). Tunis is the capital. The Atlas Mountains in the north form a dry plateau that merges with fertile plains near the coast; in the south, below the Chott Djerid and other salt lakes, stretches the Sahara desert. The irregular coastline has several fine harbors. Agriculture, mining, energy, tourism, and manufacturing are all important to the economy. Wheat, barley, grapes, olives, sugar beets, citrus fruits, and dates are the leading crops, and petroleum and phosphates are the principal minerals. Manufactured goods include textiles, steel, and processed food. The population is largely Berber and Arab, and Islam is the dominant religion. Arabic is the official language, although French is widely spoken. History

    Introduction
Located on the northern coast of Africa, Tunisia has boundaries with Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east.
The Atlas Mountains divide the country into two regions, the well-watered north and the semi-arid south. The northern region, which contains the Kroumirie Forest, Bizerte, and the Medjerda River Valley, is further divided into three subregions: the northwest, with extensive cork forests; the north central, with its fertile grasslands, and the northeast from Tunis to Cap Bon, noted for its livestock, citrus fruits and garden produce.

    Some history
Many Colors Tourism and cultural interaction describes a form of "Back-ward and forward" linkage in the country of origin and destination.
Diversified cultural differences between one destination or locality and another are now sought. This had led to increased interaction of culture and tourism.
Cultural identity expressed in regionalism is a counter part for the cultural uniformity related to the western culture domination. The culture should be extended here, to involve the present traditions of the leaving culture. Our challenge is balancing on one hand, between the respect for its privacy, tradtions and pattern of living and, on the other, sharing authentic parts of the cultural experience. Tunisia Where's that!!
As the map reveals, Tunisia has the Mediterranean Sea to its north and east. Tunisia is also inbetween Libya (South) and Algeria (West). Even though it is between two volitile countries, it is relatively stable. It is a small, fairly developed country with a varied history and culture. Tunisia is an Arabic and Islamic country, but it was once a French protectorate and as a result, Tunisia is a crossroads between East and West. This western influence still permeates Tunisian culture. Tunisia gained control of its own destiny in 1956. When Tunisia became the Rupublic of Tunisia it strengthened its relations with both the Arab states and with France. For example French is still widely spoken. Nevertheless it struggles to maintain a balance between its rich Arab heritage and its modern western influences. Because of its unique place in the world, its relatively stable politics and its mild Mediterranean climate, Tunisia has become a popular holiday destination. Tourism has become a thriving industry and there are many resorts along the East coast.

Photo courtesy of Manfred Leiter. Tunisia is considered to be one of the most liberal nations in the Islamic world, especially in terms of the rights accorded to women. The country has been influenced throughout its history by waves of immigrants - primarily Phonecian, Arab, Berber, African, Turkish, and European giving rise to a unique Tunisian culture. The official language of Tunisia is Arabic, although the use of French is widespread, reflecting the country's French colonial history.
A number of international festivals are held annually in Tunisia, celebrating music, dancing, film, and history. In addition, numerous archaeological sites and museums are located throughout the country, including ruins at the ancient Roman city of Carthage. The prestigious Bardo Museum in Tunis houses an impressive collection of Tunisia's world-renowned mosaics.
