Seeing the impressive collection of Roman mosaics at the El Jem Museum in central Tunisia.
Your host for part of this very special tour will be TunisUSA founder, Jerry Sorkin. Sorkin, a specialist in Middle East and North African studies, has spent considerable time in Tunisia over nearly two decades, during which he has developed close relationships with a myriad of Tunisians in various parts of the country and of various walks of life. He is a frequent lecturer with recent lecture invitations including a UNESCO sponsored conference in Tunisia, as well as at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
Also joining the tour will be Professor Nejib Ben Lazreg, one of Tunisia’s leading archaeologists and historians. Professor Ben Lazreg is affiliated with the National Institute of Heritage in Tunis and is the director of Roman Sites of the central part of Tunisia. He has been involved in excavations of antiquity sites in many parts of Tunisia.
During this in-depth tour, participants will not only see Tunisia, but will experience the country and its people in a manner that few tours can offer. Due to the nature of this tour and some of the venues visited, space is limited!

Counter Culture by Robert Sietsema Night in Tunisia March 16th, 2001 6:00 PM The Old Medina on Avenue B: ceramic tagines appear magically at Le Souk. (photo: Teddy Maki) Le Souk 47 Avenue B, 212-777-5454. Open Sunday through Thursday 6 p.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday to 1 a.m. No credit cards. Bathroom wheelchair accessible, though getting there through the dark tangle of tables will be difficult. wagged from the ceiling, 34 Berber lamps fling tentacles of light. Their collective candlepower is insufficient for the hapless diner to detect the color of the walls or, crucially, read the menu without angling it back and forth. Worse, narrow metal chairs torture butts any wider than Kate Moss's (hint: hang one cheek over the side, switch every five minutes). Yet though my initial impulse was to bolt from Le Souk, I couldn't resist staying once I discovered that the chef is Tunisian, and the menu an interesting mix of North African fare. You might as well be sitting in Tunis's Old Medina once you dig into ajja merguez ($6), a delicious poach of lamb sausages in a fragrant, brick-red sauce subtly laced with cumin. In the middle floats a runny egg like the sun rising over the ruins of Carthage. Indeed, one of the principal characteristics of Tunisian food is the incessant use of eggs—even slices of pizza bought along Tunis's modern Avenue de France are topped with sliced egg. Thus, I was disappointed with Le Souk's brik ($6.50). While the Tunisian original is a meal-size filo box stuffed with potato, tuna, and undercooked egg—a source of mirth for your companions as you bite into it and yolk splats on your shirt—this version is, alas, a trio of dainty pita triangles enclosing a niggling schmear of spuds and capers on the usual boring bed of baby lettuce.

Tunisia Special CULTURE - Crucible of civilisation Survey written by Anver Versi On the African continent, where the cultural crisis is most acute, Tunisia and Egypt are the rare exceptions. Both have very deep histories and both have worked tirelessly to keep their histories as fresh as possible. But culture is not only about ancient history; it is the story of how people adapt and change as events around them change. It is about evolution and unbroken identity. Well aware of the enormous resources that European countries and the US pour into their own cultural spheres, Tunisia has embarked on a unified national strategy to maintain and deepen its cultural identity. President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has decided that over the next four years to 2004, a full one percent of GDP will go to culture. The annual budget for culture is expected to grow from $45m in 1999 to $140m in 2004. Budgetary allocation is as follows: Cultural exhibitions (24%); museums and institutions (20%); cinema (14%); literature (14%), theatre (9%) and poetry (4%).

    Introduction
Tunisia's list of attractions would do justice to a country twice its size. From the Roman-era hot springs at Hamman Mellegue to the space-age sets of Star Wars (parts of which were filmed at Matmata), its lush-to-lunar landscapes have seen more action than the New World nations combined. Spend a few days here and you'll agree: daydreaming at the famous Roman ruins of Carthage and El-Jem is almost as good as stepping into Virgil's Aeneid and knocking one back with Dido, while a day's dawdling on the north coast's beaches will leave you wondering why Hannibal ever left. Tourism remains very low-key throughout most of the country, though if you're looking for resort life you can find that too. Be it Tunis' French-Arab culture collage or the Sahara's unthinkably massive expanse, you're going to be impressed with what you find in Tunisia. After all, they've had 3000 years to prepare for your visit. Full country name: Republic of Tunisia Area: 163,610 sq km

    CULTURE
A n ideal climate, a long and gentle seacoast, Tunisia , the northernmost country of Africa has for over 3000 years witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitive s or adventurers, to conquer or to claim, warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers each leaving a part of their story in stone or mosaics , on hills of Carthage and the threshold of the Sahara.
This heritage, Tunisia's greatest wealth has been held in trust and preserved in hundreds of sites and museums from the small Punic museum in Utica to the vast collections of the prestigious National Museum of Bardo . Most Museums are closed on Mondays, whereas many on-site archeological museums and ruins are open all week. An entrance fee is usually charged and a caretaker will often act as guide.
