A n ideal climate, a long and gentle seacoast, Tunisia , the northernmost country of Africa has for over 3000 years witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitive s or adventurers, to conquer or to claim, warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers each leaving a part of their story in stone or mosaics , on hills of Carthage and the threshold of the Sahara.
This heritage, Tunisia's greatest wealth has been held in trust and preserved in hundreds of sites and museums from the small Punic museum in Utica to the vast collections of the prestigious National Museum of Bardo . Most Museums are closed on Mondays, whereas many on-site archeological museums and ruins are open all week. An entrance fee is usually charged and a caretaker will often act as guide.

Culture
The Berbers were the original inhabitants of Tunisia, but waves of immigration over the centuries have brought Phoenicians, Jews, Romans, Vandals and Arabs. There was a major influx of Spanish Muslims in the 17th century, and the Ottoman Turks have also added their bit to the great ethnic mix. Islam is the state religion. Although while there has been a definite resurgence of religious adherence, particularly among the young and unemployed, the country remains fairly liberal. A small Jewish community practices in Tunis and on the island of Jerba, and there are also about 20,000 Roman Catholics. Thanks largely to the efforts of the secular, socialist former president, Habib Bourguiba, conditions for women in Tunisia are better than just about anywhere in the Islamic world - to western eyes, at least. Bourguiba outlawed polygamy and divorce by renunciation, and also placed limits on the tradition of arranging marriages, setting a minimum marriage age of 17 for girls and giving them the right to refuse a proposed marriage. His calling the veil 'an odious rag' led to its present state of scarcity. Still, ancient traditions die hard, and women travellers are well advised to keep their upper arms and shoulders covered and to opt for long skirts or trousers. Men wearing shorts are considered to be in their underwear and can sometimes incite indignation as well. Public displays of affection are frowned upon in most parts of the country.

Tunisia Time and Date Tunisia Culture Back to Top Tunisia's history as either a centre or vassal of Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Berber, and Arabic power has left a rich heritage of architectural remains, particularly in the north. Modern Tunisians utilize both Arabic and French in literature but generally use French in the scientific disciplines. Annual agricultural yields in Tunisia fluctuate because of the frequency of drought and the lack of extensive water resources for irrigation. The leading crops in the fertile plains of the north include cereal grains such as wheat and barley (1,012,000 metric tons in 2000); vegetables and melons (1.9 million metric tons); and fruits, most importantly grapes, dates from Saharan oases, and oranges from the Cape Bon Peninsula (898,205 metric tons). About half the productive land is used for grazing, and, because of drought, the livestock industry is also subject to fluctuations. In 2000 the country’s livestock included 6.6 million sheep, 1.4 million goats, 790,000 cattle, 231,000 camels, 56,200 horses, and 40 million poultry. Tunisia has a road network of 23,100 km (14,354 mi) connecting important commercial centers. The country is also served by 3,640 km (2,262 mi) of railroad track. Tunisia has four major ports—Tunis, Bizerte, Susah, and Sfax. A fifth port, AsSukhayrah, specializes in petroleum bunkering. A modern port is also being constructed at Qabis. The country has five international airports, two of which serve Tunis.

Tunisia History
The area known today as Tunisia has seen a long line of invaders and conquerors. In the 8th century BC, the Phoenicians, maritime traders from present-day Lebanon, founded Carthage. The powerful city-state first traded with and then ruled North Africa and modern-day Sicily, Sardinia and parts of Spain. The Roman Empire conquered Carthage in 146 BC and razed the city. Nearly 500 years later, the Vandals swept across northern Africa, ousted the Romans and ruled in their stead. A century of Vandal domination ended when the Byzantine armies kicked them out. The next invasion was the one that has left the most lasting influence. After the death of the prophet Muhammad, Arab armies pushed from the Middle East into North Africa. Kairouan, the first major Islamic city in the Maghreb, was founded in AD 671 and became the capital of Ifriqiyya. The Fatimids, a Berber Shiite group, gained control in the early 10th century and founded a new city, Mahdia, as their capital. (The Fatimids also later founded Cairo.) In the 16th century, Tunisia became part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1881, the country came under French control.

Independence came in 1956, and President Habib Bourguiba, a ruler in the strongman tradition, led the country until he was removed from office in 1987 at the age of 83. The government, now headed by Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali, has continued Bourguiba's mixture of political autocracy and social liberalization. Because freedom of the press has been virtually eliminated in the country, and because thousands of fundamentalist Islamic dissidents have been jailed, it is difficult to determine whether the government is really that popular, or whether it has effectively stifled opposition. Nevertheless, the country has enjoyed relative stability for decades.

http://www.tunisietourisme.com.tn/guide-e/attractions/attraction.htm
The recent increase in leisure centers resulted from implementing two strategies. On the one hand, the will to pursue promoting tourism, which is so vital for economic and social prosperity, motivated a strategy aimed at quantitative and qualitative development. One of the key objectives of such strategy is entertainment and leisure promotion.
On the other hand, Tunisians, whose living standards improved over the last few years, feel more strongly the need for pleasant recreation. Recognizing the legitimacy of this new need, public authorities have produced a new policy aimed at developing internal tourism and increasing amusement parks.
There are many amusement parks in tourist areas and elsewhere. List of Amusement Parks Home I Tourist Guide I Tourism Professionals I Press Center I Site map
