Dino-Killer Asteroid Triggered Huge Tsunamis By Larry O'Hanlon, Discovery News Drawing of Dino-Killing Asteroid In Depth: Fireballs from Space On TV: "Sci-Trek" Launch a Meteor at Earth Aug. 20 Landslide deposits found in a coastal canyon near San Rosario, Baja California Norte, Mexico, are the first evidence that the magnitude 13 seismic shock of the Chicxulub impact 65 million years ago also set off huge tsunami-making landslides far beyond the Atlantic Ocean. There are two ways tsunamis can be created during an asteroid impact: if the asteroid itself hits the ocean; and if submarine slopes give way, pushing huge amounts of water at the coast.
For years geologists have known that massive offshore landslides occurred in the western Atlantic as far north as Newfoundland, because of evidence found in cores drilled out of the seafloor sediments. But the Chicxulub impact didn't happen in the Pacific Ocean, and the tsunamis there would have been caused by quake-induced landslides like that seen in San Rosario. "Here (at San Rosario) we have an outcrop where you can walk and see the huge landslide sheets," said Grant Yip, a geology graduate student at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

THE ATJ DOLLAR COLLECTION The seismological and other collections of Dr ATJ Dollar, held in the National Seismological Archive (NSA), have been examined and catalogued as part of an NSA initiative on the study of the history of seismology. The Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the report on this project can be downloaded from the foot of this page, or from the NSA reports page A.T.John Dollar (1908-1981) graduated in geology from King's College, London in 1931, and moved to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where, supervised by CE Tilley, he gained his PhD on the petrology and structure of Lundy. In 1935 he became a Research Fellow at Emmanuel, and after a brief period at St Andrews University moved to Glasgow University in 1939. War service interrupted his tenure there, then, in 1950 Dollar became head of the Geology Department at Birkbeck College, and remained there until his retirement. During his academic career, Dollar developed interests in many subjects. His collected papers reflect these interests, and contain material on volcanology (including photos and articles on Surtsey, Jan Mayen, Iceland, Hawaii and various Pacific Islands), tsunamis, geology (especially of the southwest peninsula and Lundy), landslips, seismology and seismotectonics. He was largely responsible for the installation of a Jaggar Recorder at Comrie, Perthshire in 1938, and was particularly interested in the Great Glen and its supposed seismicity. Dollar wanted instrumentation on both sides of the fault, and was keen to site a seismograph at Fort Augustus Abbey. He also invented a clinometer, and various accessories for petrological microscopes.

These conditions are described and evaluated to ensure that the project facilities or personnel would not be significantly affected by seismic hazards such as ground rupture or ground shaking due to seismic activity; and that dredged pit slopes would not be impacted by physical hazards such as ground shaking or land sliding. Additionally, a discussion of the mineral resources to be extracted from the site is included in this section and analysis regarding the potential for onsite soils to be classified as prime farmland. 4.3.2 Setting Regional Environment Geology The Sacramento Valley is underlain by recent alluvium with numerous stream deposits of silt, sand, and gravels deposited by streams from the foothills to the east. These recent deposits consist primarily of reddish, sandy clay and black topsoil overlying unconsolidated sand, silt, clay, and gravel. The valley alluvium tends to increase in thickness from east to west.

Chugach National Forest The Chugach Mountains and Prince William Sound Prince William Sound with its 3,000 miles of shoreline is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains to the east, west and north. Fifty-mile long Montague Island and several smaller islands form natural breakwaters between the Sound and the Gulf of Alaska. Between the barrier islands stretch underwater sills separating the Sound's deep waters from the much shallower waters of the Gulf. Deep water renewal occurs during the winter when cold winds from interior Alaska cool the surface waters causing them to sink, while the warmer bottom water rises to the surface bringing rich nutrients which support huge plankton blooms in the spring. Millions of years of glaciation gradually carved away a coastal plateau creating the sound with its many tributary fiords and passageways, islands and rocky shores. Fewer than 10,000 people live in the three towns-Whittier, Valdez, and Cordova- and two native villages-Chenega and Tatitlek situated on the shores of the Sound. Because the Sound was formed by millions of years of glaciation, its shorelines are heavily indented by deep fiords and many smaller bays. No roads connect these communities. Evidence for a deep asthenosphere beneath North America from western United States SKS splits.
Derek L. Schutt and Eugene D. Humphreys, pages 291-294.
A traditional view of Earth has a weak layer - the asthenosphere lying immediately beneath plates, with plate motion accommodated by deformation within this layer. Such deformation would create fabric in asthenospheric rocks that could be detected with S waves; S waves split into 2 waves with first-arriving S waves vibrating in the direction of asthenosphere shear. S waves recorded in the western United States are inconsistent with this expectation, implying that the weak layer accommodating plate motion occurs at greater depths, where the minerals do not create rock fabric when deformed. This suggests that North America plate motion occurs largely by deformation below 200 km, which is below the traditional depth of the asthenosphere.

Earthquakes and other processes generating tsunami are also described. The intensity of tsunami waves is estimated, and the causes of tsunami generation are given together with the reliability of the information. The literary data are given on coordinates and magnitudes of tsunamigenic earthquakes. 18 zones of tsunami generation are identified, which have been subdivided into four groups according to the maximum intensity and periodicity. Audience: The book should be of interest to seismologists, oceanographers, volcanologists, geographers, and specialists investigating natural hazards and their consequences.

A tsunami is a series of very long wavelength ocean waves caused by the sudden displacement of water by earthquakes, landslides, or submarine slumps. Ordinarily, tsunamis are produced only by earthquakes exceeding magnitude 7.5 . In the open ocean, tsunami waves travel at speeds of 600-800 kilometers per hour, but their wave heights are usually only a few centimeters. As they approach shallow water near a coast, tsunami waves travel more slowly, but their wave heights may increase to many meters, and thus they can become very destructive.
