American President Harry S. Truman, 1884-1972
America's 33rd President, Harry S. Truman, inherited the Oval Office after the sudden death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945, as well as World War II and a White House in such disrepair Truman's piano fell through the floor. Serving the remainder of Roosevelt's term and reelected for a second, Harry S. Truman, the first world leader to employ atomic weapons died December 26th, 1972 at the age of 88. Born May 8th, 1884 in Lamar Missouri, Harry S. Truman was the first of 3 children of John and Martha Ellen Truman, who gave their son no middle name but the initial "S" to appease relatives battling for naming honors. The Truman family moved to Independence Missouri in 1890 where Harry, a late enrollment in school because of frail health and poor eyesight became smitten with a young classmate, Elizabeth "Bess" Wallace. While Harry had piano lessons two to three times a week and read voraciously, Bess was a standout student athlete and star of skating and tennis teams. The odd couple were inseparable, and in 1918 became engaged as Harry Truman, a volunteer for the Army in World War I prepared to sail for France as the Captain of Battery D from Missouri. Truman was an unlikely commander of the collection of roughnecks and rowdies who had become known as the "Dizzy D" but under his leadership shaped into a crack unit. The Battery D unit were recognized for distinguished service at the battles of St. Mihiel and Argonne, and their commanding officer, Harry S. Truman returned home to Missouri a Major in 1919. Truman's first act stateside was to marry his childhood sweetheart, Bess Wallace in June of that year.

The first page of this document is a memorandum from the Secretary of War, Henry Stimson, asking for Truman's permission to issue the press release announcing the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The second page contains Truman's handwritten response granting permission but asking that the release be made no sooner than August 2, after the conclusion of the Potsdam Conference. Courtesy of: National Archives and Records Administration Truman graduated from high school in 1901 and because of his father’s financial difficulties, college was not an option, and an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point was eliminated because of his eyesight. He started working for the Santa Fe Railroad as a timekeeper for $35 a month. He then moved to Kansas City, where he accepted employment as a mail clerk for the Kansas City Star and joined the Missouri National Guard. A while later, he accepted a position as a clerk for the National Bank of Commerce and then as a bookkeeper for the Union National Bank, adding more to his experiences than to his finances or sense of accomplishment. In 1906, at the age of 22, he was called home to help his father manage the Young farm in Grandview after his maternal grandfather’s death. He spent the next 10 years as a successful farmer, in the “golden age” of American agriculture. He became more confident and gregarious than he had ever been before, doing the work into which he had been born. He joined Mike Pendergast’s Kansas City Tenth Ward Democratic Club and the Masons. He began to actively participate in politics, and on his father’s death in 1914, he succeeded him as road overseer, and in 1915 he became the Grandview postmaster.

Harry S. Truman, to son of a farmer, was born in Lamar, Missouri, on 8th May, 1884. After an education in Independence, Missouri, he farmed on his parents' land. In 1917, soon after the United States entered the First World War , he enlisted in the army. Truman served on the Western Front and achieved the rank of captain.
On returning from the war Truman ran an unsuccessful haberdashery before studying law in Kansas City. Truman became active in local politics. A great admirer of Woodrow Wilson , Truman joined the Democratic Party and in 1922 was elected county judge (1922-24). This was followed by eight years as presiding judge, a post he held until being elected to the Senate in 1934.

Harry S. Truman: The Man Harry S. Truman joined a light artillery battery in Kansas City in the summer of 1905, and at once got into hot water. He presented himself to a Kansas City photographer's studio where he had his picture taken in civilian clothes, and then the photographer took him in his new uniform, a beautiful blue affair with red stripes along the trouser legs and red piping on the cuffs, brass buttons down the tunic, a red fourragere hanging from the right shoulder, and a big ornate hat. He stood for one of the pictures in uniform, sat for another, with and without hat. He was a thin bony youth, four years out of high school, just turned twenty-one. In 1917 although a farmer and over age - he was born in 1884 - he reenlisted, and thought the men of the artillery regiment would make him a sergeant and instead they elected him first lieutenant. In France the next summer as a captain, he took over the unruly Battery D, which had been hard on its officers. The day after he took command his men knew they had (as one of them remembered) "a different cat to do business with." They liked him, then adored him, and he took them through heavy action and brought all 198 men and officers out alive. On the way back, in 1919, on the new 14,000-ton German steamer Zeppelin , loaded without ballast, which wallowed from one side to the other, the men whiled away their time playing poker, taking a percentage of each game to buy a 16-inch-high loving cup inscribed to "Captain Harry S. Truman. Presented by the members of Battery D in appreciation of his justice, ability and leadership."

within Presidents all of American Experience World War II ended on August 14, 1945, with the unconditional surrender of Japan. In Washington, President Harry Truman turned his attention to the pressing needs of Americans. Twelve million soldiers returned to look for jobs, homes, and financial security. Citizens who had sacrificed to defeat fascism wanted an end to shortages of consumer goods. African Americans who fought as hard as their white counterparts to win the war demanded equal rights and protections under the law. The task of bringing stability and prosperity to all Americans, however, would prove impossible. Truman, a New Deal Democrat, delivered a message to Congress on September 6, 1945, which laid out his vision for postwar America. He listed 21 main policy points, including a minimum wage, guaranteed employment, medical insurance, housing aid, improved benefits for war veterans, and wage and price controls.

    Early life and career.
Truman was the son of a mule trader and farmer. He attended school in Independence, Mo., completing high school in 1901. He became a bank clerk in Kansas City; then in 1906 he took over management of his maternal grandmother's farm at Grandview. He also served as local postmaster, road overseer, and national guardsman. He became a partner in a lead mine (1915) and in an oil-prospecting business (1916); both failed. Truman distinguished himself in heavy action as a captain in World War I, showing bravery and other qualities of leadership. On June 28, 1919, he married Elizabeth ("Bess") Wallace, an Independence girl whom he had known since childhood. He became a partner in a Kansas City haberdashery store, and, when the business failed, he entered politics with the help of Thomas Pendergast, a Democratic boss of Jackson county.

T his exhibit celebrates Harry S Truman, an American Visionary. It highlights his formative years, family, increasing stature in Washington, the presidency, and return home.
H arry Truman was an effective and trustworthy leader. Military service and an early political career gave him experience and confidence to lead the nation. Although he respected the presidency, he had never aspired to be Chief Executive. Content as Missouri senator, Truman reluctantly became Roosevelt's vice president. W hen Roosevelt died in April 1945, the new president faced daunting challenges. Able to make tough decisions, Truman was instrumental in ending World War II, halting Communist expansion, and rebuilding war-torn Europe.
T his down-to-earth man had the moral courage to do what was right on the home front. Truman implemented far-reaching civil rights legislation and integrated the US military. Take a look at the treasured belongings and political memorabilia from the Harry S Truman National Historic Site museum collections. Photographs from the Truman Presidential Museum and Library supplement the exhibit.
You can also take a virtual tour of several rooms that are unchanged from the time President and Mrs. Truman lived at 219 N. Delaware, Independence, Missouri.
