diphtheria
Truman developed diphtheria in 1894 at age 10. He was paralyzed for several months and had to be wheeled around in a baby carriage. Diphtheria antitoxin was unavailable then, so he was treated with ipecac and whiskey. He developed a severe distaste for both. [
farsightedness
As a child, Truman was diagnosed with a rare eye problem, "flat eyeballs." He wore thick glasses beginning at age eight, after his mother noticed he was able to see the large print in the family Bible, but unable to see objects at a distance. It has been said that Truman was far-sighted (which fits with the flat eyeballs diagnosis) [ ], but this pattern of visual acuity is characteristic of near-sightedness.

    Harry S Truman Born: Birthplace:
Lamar, Mo. Harry S. Truman was born on a farm near Lamar, Mo., on May 8, 1884. During World War I, he served in France as a captain with the 129th Field Artillery. He married Bess Wallace in 1919. After engaging briefly and unsuccessfully in the haberdashery business in Kansas City, Mo., Truman entered local politics. Under the sponsorship of Thomas Pendergast, Democratic boss of Missouri, he held a number of local offices, preserving his personal honesty in the midst of a notoriously corrupt political machine. In 1934, he was elected to the Senate and was reelected in 1940. During his first term he was a loyal but quiet supporter of the New Deal, but in his second term, an appointment as head of a Senate committee to investigate war production brought out his special qualities of honesty, common sense, and hard work, and he won widespread respect. Elected vice president in 1944, Truman became president upon Roosevelt's sudden death in April 1945 and was immediately faced with the problems of winding down the war against the Axis and preparing the nation for postwar adjustment. Germany surrendered on May 8, and in July Truman attended the Potsdam Conference to discuss the settlement plans for postwar Europe. To end the war with Japan, he authorized the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9, 1945. Japan surrendered on Aug. 14. Although the action undoubtedly saved many American lives by bringing the war to an end, the morality of the decision is still debated.

Writings Memoirs (2 vols., 1955-56) Died : December 26, 1972, Kansas City, MO Buried : Independence, MO Consulting Editor Biography: Early Years Harry Truman believed in the United States with an intensity that few today can quite understand. He was fully convinced, without ever articulating it, that nothing fundamentally bad could happen to America, because the United States was God's country. It was a nineteenth-century belief residing in a twentieth-century Midwestern optimist. "Of course you've got to be an optimist if you're going to try to help the country go forward," he once said. "No pessimist ever did anything for the welfare of the world." Harry S. Truman was born and raised in western Missouri into a hardworking farm family. "My mother was naturally the one who took care of the youngsters at home and saw that they came up the right way," he recalled. "When I was ten . . . [she] gave me a little blackboard on the back of which was a column of four or five paragraphs on every President up 'til that time, which included Grover Cleveland. And that's where I got interested in the history of the country." His father wanted Harry to become a farmer, and he exercised tough discipline on the studious boy. "If he didn't like what you did," Truman remembered, "he'd hit you with a hickory cane-and that was an Andrew Jackson descendent."

On January 5 , 1949, President Harry Truman used his State of the Union address to recommend measures including national health insurance, raising the minimum wage, strengthening the position of organized labor, and guarantying the civil rights of all Americans. Referencing the popular " New Deal " programs of his predecessor, Franklin Delano Roosevelt , Truman styled his reform package the "Fair Deal." A few months earlier the president's career seemed over. Running for reelection against popular Republican governor Thomas E. Dewey, political pundits agreed Truman needed a miracle to win. Adding to the incumbent troubles, a revived Progressive Party attempted to attract left-leaning Democrats, while segregationist "Dixiecrats" broke with the Democrats to run South Carolina Governor Strom Thurmond for president. Responding to the competition, Truman made contact with thousands of voters via a 30,000 mile campaign of whistle-stop speeches. Still, the Chicago Daily Tribune was so confident of the president's defeat it went to press with the November 3, 1948 headline "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN."

Speech of Joseph McCarthy, Wheeling, West Virginia, February 9, 1950 Today we can almost physically hear the mutterings and rumblings of an invigorated god of war. You can see it, feel it, and hear it all the way from the Indochina hills, from the shores of Formosa, right over into the very heart of Europe itself. Karl Marx dismissed God as a hoax, and Lenin and Stalin have added in clear-cut, unmistakable language their resolve that no nation, no people who believe in a god, can exist side by side with their communistic state. Ladies and gentlemen, can there be anyone tonight who is so blind as to say that the war is not on? Can there by anyone who fails to realize that the Communist world has said the time is now? . . . that this is the time for the show-down between the democratic Christian world and the communistic atheistic world? Unless we face this fact, we shall pay the price that must be paid by those who wait too long. The reason why we find ourselves in a position of impotency is not because our only powerful potential enemy has sent men to invade our shores . . . but rather because of the traitorous actions of those who have been treated so well by this Nation. It has not been the less fortunate, or members of minority groups who have been traitorous to this Nation, but rather those who have had all the benefits that the wealthiest Nation on earth has had to offer . . . the finest homes, the finest college education and the finest jobs in government we can give.

Last Years D 1940 Election To no one’s surprise, the two Missouri Democrats who brought about Pendergast’s downfall challenged Truman for his Senate seat in the primary. One was Governor Lloyd Stark, whom Roosevelt supported, and the other was Maurice Milligan, whose nomination for a second term as U.S. district attorney Truman had opposed in the Senate. Truman began his primary fight with no political backing, no money, and two popular reformers as opponents. He traveled the state, making speeches about his record in short, simple language. He won the primary, and despite his Pendergast association, mentioned frequently by his Republican opponent, he won in November. His reelection was so unexpected that when he returned to the Senate, his colleagues gave him a standing ovation.

He had been vice president for only 83 days when President Franklin D. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. World War II still had to be won. Plans to establish the United Nations organization had just been started.
When Truman became president, he was known mainly for his work as chairman of a wartime Senate investigating committee that had saved millions of dollars in military contracts. The Missouri Democrat met the challenges of his presidency with courage, determination, and imagination. During the first few weeks of his Administration, the Allies won victory in Europe. Truman then made one of the most awesome decisions ever considered by one human being to use the powerful new atomic bomb against Japan to end World War II.
Truman's presidency
Truman faced other great problems throughout his years in the White House. The United States had to reorganize its economy from a wartime to a peacetime basis. Many war-torn countries needed large relief programs. Western nations faced Communist subversion and aggression in a Cold War that divided the world. To meet these challenges, Truman's Administration created such far-reaching programs as the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the Point Four Program, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Truman was born in Missouri. Harry Truman was the great-great-great nephew of John Tyler He was a Baptist. He served in the military during WWI. A good piano player, Truman considered a career in music but went into politics instead. He became president when Franklin Roosevelt died. Harry Truman didn't have a Vice President. He had been Franklin Roosevelt's last VP, and the position was not filled until Truman was elected for his own term in 1948. He was one of 15 Presidents who didn't win the popular vote in his election. The train Truman used to campaign in 1948 was called the Ferdinand Magellan.
Truman was the first President to have his inauguration televised. One day Harry Truman walked into the Green Room and looked down at the rug. Something bothered him about that rugfinally he realized that the head of the eagle on the presidential seal in the center of the rug was turned the wrong way. Instead of facing the olive branch, this eagle's head pointed toward the arrows. Promptly Truman ordered that the rug be re-stitched with the eagle's head turned the right way. The smartest boy in Truman's graduating class of 1901, Charles G. Ross, became Truman's press secretary.

    TRUMAN, HARRY S.
, thirty-third president of the United States, remembered for his genial common touch and outspoken bluntness. Truman rose in politics as the result of an alliance with the notorious Pendergast machine of Kansas City. A failure in various business ventures, he was notably successful in other endeavors—as a combat artillery captain in World War I, a rising figure in the Reserve Officers Corps (1920-1939), an effective county administrator (1923-1924, 1927-1934), and a popular and industrious U.S. senator (1935-1945). Beneath a usually friendly manner, he harbored a thick layer of aggressiveness that occasionally discharged itself in angry outbursts. Achieving the vice presidency in 1944 because of his acceptability to all wings of the Democratic party, he became president upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, April 12, 1945. As a party leader, he hoped to maintain a grand coalition that would have room for all the diverse elements of Roosevelt's political coalition. Personally, however, he considered himself a bit to the left of center and possessed roots in the tradition of western and midwestern insurgency. As president, therefore, he pursued an aggressively liberal program (the Fair Deal) that roused the Democratic presidential party and helped him win election in 1948. Its major elements, however, were defeated by a conservative Congress and an indifferent postwar public concerned primarily with preserving the New Deal rather than with achieving new liberal breakthroughs.

    Missouri History
    Harry S Truman
    A 50th Anniversary
    Commemoration of
    His Presidency
by Robert H. Ferrell No Missourian, nor for that matter, any citizen of any of the 50 states, needs reminding that half a century ago a Missourian became president of the United States. But the passage of 50 years does give opportunity to reflect upon what Harry S Truman brought with him to the White House in 1945 and what he accomplished in the momentous eight years that followed.
    A Missouri Upbringing
As for what he brought, it was assuredly his varied background and experiences from Missouri: growing up on a series of Missouri farms, living for a while in Independence and then for three years 1903 06 in Kansas City. Remembering his sudden rise to power and his prominent political role during World War II, people often forget that Truman served a remarkable political apprenticeship as well as a county judge and Senator before reaching the vice presidency in January 1945. These experiences shaped his character and prepared him for what, three months later, was to come.
All of these things, but perhaps especially the farm, influenced Truman. As his mother once remarked, "It was on the farm that Harry got his common sense. He didn't get it in town." Truman was born in 1884, in the farm community of Lamar, 120 miles south of Kansas City, but his parents soon moved from the village to the farm. Although he lived and attended grade and high school in Independence, the later president returned to his grandparents' farm in 1906 and remained there until he left for France and World War I in 1917. He often spoke of himself as a farm boy. One can almost see him in those farm years before the war, walking or riding behind horses or mules or both, or engaged with a hoe, cleaning out the corn rows.
