Los Angeles (special) To mark its celebration of the 50th anniversary of Israel, the Skirball Museum borrowed some very special objects from the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri a Torah, a Torah case, a manuscript, two busts, a pair of glasses, a cane, and a replica of a desk plaque. Why does a Jewish museum in Los Angeles have to ask an institution in America's heartland to lend a Torah, or a Torah case? These particular ones had been given to Harry S Truman by Israeli President Chaim Weizmann in recognition of the U.S. President's decision in 1948 to recognize the new State of Israel The small Torah was presented at the White House to Truman only 11 days after Israel became independent. According to Larry Hackman, director of the Truman Library who was on hand for the opening of the Skirball exhibit last week, "Truman hadn't been briefed by his staff and didn't know what a Torah was. He sort of looked at it, then looked at Weizmann and said, 'Thanks, I've always wanted one of these.'" By 1956, three years after leaving the Presidency, Truman was very much aware of what a Torah was and its symbolic importance, Hackman added in an interview. He quoted Abba Eban, who in

I always remember an epitaph which is in the cemetery at Tombstone, Arizona. It says: 'Here lies Jack Williams. He done his damnedest.' I think that is the greatest epitaph a man can have - When he gives everything that is in him to do the job he has before him. That is all you can ask of him and that is what I have tried to do.

In Defense of Harry S. Truman : by William Hughes “It’s a good thing that he did not express his feelings to someone like myself, because I would have DECKED him.” Now, who do you think uttered those nasty words about our 33rd president, Harry S. Truman? Was it cowboy tough guy, John Wayne? No! Was it the California “Governator,” Ah-nuld Schwarznegger? Sorry, wrong thug! It was Richard Cohen, a trendy Woody-Allen-like syndicated columnist! Cohen was all steamed up about the recent disclosure of portions of a diary belonging to the late Truman, who had taken over as president on April 12, 1945, after the sudden death of FDR. On July 21, 1947, while Truman was still in office, and with the heavy burdens of a post-WWII on his shoulders, he had written, “The Jews, I find are very, very SELFISH. They care not how many Estonians, Latvians, Finns, Poles, Yugoslavs, or Greeks get murdered or mistreated as Displaced Persons as long as the Jews get SPECIAL TREATMENT. “Yet when they have power, physical, financial or political, neither Hitler or Stalin,” Truman continued in a philosophical vein, “has anything on them for CRUELTY OR MISTREATMENT to the underdog. Put an underdog on top and it makes no difference whether his name is Russian, Jewish, Negro, Management, Labor, Mormon, Baptist, he goes haywire.” The irresponsible Cohen insisted that he would have assaulted Truman had he expressed those same words “to someone like myself.” Well, at least, Truman was in good company. Cohen’s rant also managed to insult Thomas Jefferson, one of Virginia’s finest patriots.

In 1890, the year the Little White House was built, the Trumans moved to Independence. His poor eyesight prevented Truman from participating in sports but led him to two of his greatest passions, reading and music. An avid reader, he was proud of the fact that he had read every book in the Independence Public Library. Truman was also a fine musician, playing the piano. An excellent student, Truman's parents were unable to afford college for Harry and his eyesight prevented him from attending West Point. Following his high school graduation in 1901, Truman worked at a variety of jobs including farming, oil drilling and banking In 1917, with World War I in full force, Truman joined the Army. He served in France and left the army as a Captain in May of 1919. One month later, he married Elizabeth Wallace.
After failing in the haberdashery business, Truman ran for judge in Jackson County, MO. In 1924, he ran for re-election and lost, the only election he ever lost. In 1926 he was again elected judge, a post he held until 1934 when he ran for the U.S. Senate. Truman remained in the Senate until President Franklin Roosevelt tapped him as his running mate for his fourth term in 1944.
