President Truman

I enjoyed my new position as Vice-President, but it took me a while to get used to the fact that I no longer had the voting privileges I had enjoyed for ten years as a senator.
Harry S. Truman
When Democratic party leaders determined to dump Vice President Henry Wallace from the ticket in 1944, they looked for a suitable replacement. They considered Wallace too unpredictable to serve another term under Roosevelt, whose health had visibly declined during the Second World War. There was no shortage of candidates: Majority Leader Alben Barkley , presidential assistant James F. Byrnes , Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, and others advertised their availability. But the nomination went to someone who did not want it. Missouri Senator Harry S. Truman had committed himself to nominating Byrnes. When a reporter asked why he did not become a candidate himself, considering that the next vice president might likely "succeed to the throne," Truman shook his head and replied, "Hell, I don't want to be President." Harry Truman felt content to stay in the Senate, where he had spent the happy years A Farm Boy at Heart are Farming meant hard work and isolation. Nor did it produce sufficient income for Harry to marry his childhood sweetheart Elizabeth (Bess) Wallace. Truman proposed in 1911, but Bess turned him down. Undaunted, he pursued the courtship for another eight years. After long days on the farm, Harry devoted his evenings to practicing the piano and reading history. He had other dreams as well: as a boy, he and his father had attended the Democratic National Convention in Kansas City in 1900 and watched William Jennings Bryan be nominated a second time for president. The "Great Commoner" always remained one of his heroes. Truman's father loved politics. "Politics is all he ever advises me to neglect the farm for," Harry wrote to

HARRY S. TRUMAN
(Portrait) President Truman was conscious of rivalry among US intelligence organizations both during and after World War II. He realized that reorganization was necessary and that a reorganization plan needed to be developed, from competing proposals, which would not exacerbate these rivalries. The following reflects President Truman's thinking on the subject prior to the establishment of the Central Intelligence Group in 1946 and ultimately of the Central Intelligence Agency in 1947.
"I CONSIDERED IT VERY important to this country to have a sound, well-organized intelligence system, both in the present and in the future. Properly developed, such a service would require new concepts as well as better trained and more competent personnel . . . it was imperative that we refrain from rushing into something that would produce harmful and unnecessary rivalries among the various intelligence agencies. I told Smith (Director of the Bureau of the Budget) that one thing was certainthis country wanted no Gestapo under any guise or for any reason." President Harry S. Truman

US Support for Israeli Statehood home news peacewatch top stories ... donations President Harry S. Truman and US Support for Israeli Statehood United States support for the partition of Palestine was crucial to the adoption of the UN partition plan and to the creation of the state of Israel. During World War II, the USA was anxious to maintain good relations with Saudi Arabia. President Roosevelt had promised King Saud that the USA would make no policy decisions about Palestine without consulting the Arabs, though in writing on April 5, 1945. However, a week later, Roosevelt was dead, replaced by Vice President Harry S. Truman, and the end of the war created a different political reality as well as bringing the revelation of massive murder of Jews in the Holocaust Despite his plainspoken ways, Harry S. Truman had a sweeping grasp of geopolitical realities. He was also a friend of the Jews who had made clear his support for the Zionist cause before WWII. He was strengthened in his resolve to help the Jews following the revelations of Nazi atrocities. On May 25, 1939, following the British White Paper of 1939 that limited Jewish immigration, Truman inserted a remark in the Congressional Record condemning the White paper as a repudiation of British obligations. At a Chicago rally in 1944, then Senator Truman said, " Today, not tomorrow, we must do all that is humanly possible to provide a haven for all those who can be grasped from the hands of Nazi butchers. Free lands must be opened to them."

  • Although orphaned as a child, he was a self-made millionaire. When Hoover took office the United States was prosperous and many people felt someone with Hoover’s background would be the right person to help the country become even more prosperous. On October 29, 1929 the stock market crashed, possibly because of President Calvin Coolidge ’s, tax cuts prompting the rich to invest. This day came to be known as "Black Tuesday" and was the beginning of the Great Depression. Stocks that were previously selling at thirty dollars a share were only worth pennies. Unemployment was rampant, with one hundred thousand jobs lost weekly for the next three years. By 1932 twelve million people were out of work. During the time of the Great Depression, Oklahoma went through a severe drought. Many people from Oklahoma headed to California hoping for an improvement, but they found only low wages and horrendous working conditions. John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes Of Wrath and many songs by Woodie Guthrie describe the disappointments of these people.

Truman began his political career as a county judge and then served as a US Senator from 1935-1941. On April 12, 1945, Truman became President after the death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was elected to serve a second term in 1948. Truman was the only head of government who actually used a nuclear weapon in warfare. After entering into office, he learned of the atomic bomb and had to decide whether or not to use it. Although he knew that Japan was seeking to surrender, he chose to use the bomb on two Japanese cities in short succession. On August 6, 1945, the American bomber Enola Gay dropped "little boy," detonating a gun-type uranium bomb over Hiroshima and immediately killing approximately 70,000 people. The act marked the public start of the Nuclear Age, leading to the production of nuclear weapons by many countries and changing the reality of warfare. Upon learning the news of the destruction of Hiroshima, Truman remarked, "This is the greatest thing in history."

"The Buck Stops Here," "Plain speaker," "Give 'em hell" all conjure up images of Harry S. Truman, the U.S. president remembered for his doctrine of communist containment as well as his decision to end World War II by unleashing the atom bomb on Japan. Born on a farm near Lamar, Missouri, on May 8, 1884, Truman graduated from high school in 1901 and held a variety of jobs before fighting in France as a lieutenant in the National Guard. After the war, he and a friend opened a haberdashery store, but the economy was bad and the business failed. At age 38, with the help of Kansas City political boss Thomas J. Pendergast, Truman won a country judgeship. Truman attended law school at nights, lost re-election in 1924 and was elected to another term in 1926. In 1934, with Pendergast's help, he was elected to the Senate and was branded a "Pendergast" senator upon his arrival in Washington. He was a reliable "New Dealer." His hard work, diligence and fairness to all earned the respect of his colleagues. In his second term, which he won without the help of Pendergast, he enhanced his reputation by chairing the Special Committee Investigating National Defense, exposing graft, waste and corruption and saving the United States much money. Domestically Truman worked for civil rights legislation and reformed the foreign affairs apparatus. The Foreign Service Act of 1946 professionalized the Foreign Service. The National Security Act of 1947 created the CIA, the National Security Council and the present-day Defense Department, with civilian control over the military.
