Harry S. Truman During his few weeks as Vice President, Harry S. Truman scarcely saw President Roosevelt, and received no briefing on the development of the atomic bomb or the unfolding difficulties with Soviet Russia. Suddenly these and a host of other wartime problems became Truman's to solve when, on April 12, 1945, he became President. He told reporters, "I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me." Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, in 1884. He grew up in Independence, and for 12 years prospered as a Missouri farmer. He went to France during World War I as a captain in the Field Artillery. Returning, he married Elizabeth Virginia Wallace, and opened a haberdashery in Kansas City.

PRESIDENT HARRY S TRUMAN
Harry Truman became president of the United States on April 12, 1945 upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. During Truman's presidency Germany surrendered (May 8, 1945) and Japan surrendered (Aug. 14, 1945), ending World War II. The U.S., with Truman's approval, dropped an atomic bomb on the people of Hiroshima on Aug. 6 and one on Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945. As more information has become available regarding the Japanese peace effort, the Japanese fear of losing their emperor (whom they believed was a god), and U.S. advisors who offered other methods of winning the war, the debate has grown over whether the atomic bombings were necessary to save lives and win the war (for example, see Hiroshima: Was it Necessary? Truman always staunchly defended the atomic bombings. Shortening the war, saving American lives, and revenge are the main reasons he gave for using them. In his first public explanation (Aug. 6, 1945, just after Hiroshima was a-bombed), he said: "The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold."
("Public Papers of the Presidents: Harry S Truman, 1945", pg. 197).

Harry S Truman National Historic Site includes the Truman Home in Independence, Missouri, and the Truman Farm Home in Grandview, Missouri. Both units are within the Kansas City metropolitan area (population 1.5 million). Truman Home: Harry S Truman (1884-1972), 33rd President of the United States, lived here from 1919 until his death. The white Victorian style house at 219 North Delaware Street was built by the maternal grandfather of Bess Wallace Truman (1885-1982), and was known as the "Summer White House" during the Truman administration (1945-1953). The site also includes the two adjacent homes of Mrs. Truman's brothers, and, across Delaware Street, the home of the President's favorite aunt and cousins. Truman Farm Home: Built in 1894 by Harry Truman's maternal grandmother, the Farm Home is the centerpiece of a 5.25 acre remnant of the family's former 600-acre farm. Mr. Truman worked the farm as a young man, from 1906-1917. It was here, said his mother, that Harry got his "common sense." Several outbuildings are also on the site. Truman went to school in Independence, Missouri, but could not afford college, so he worked at several jobs and on his father's farm. he got his education the hard way, in the army. His Presidency: Truman took office when President Roosevelt died just before the end of World War II, and it was Truman who made the decision to use the atomic bomb against Japan. Seeing the need to stop the spread of Communism, he established the Truman Doctrine to support nations that were "threatened by armed minorities and outside pressure." He proposed the Marshall Plan to help war-torn countries and helped form NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. His Life: During his few weeks as Vice President, Harry S. Harry S. Truman, (1884-1972), 33rd president of the United States, sworn into office at the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as World War II was reaching its climax. He authorized the dropping of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima, thus ending the war with Japan. Working to enforce a lasting peace, he helped plan a world organization of nations, and initiated the cold war foreign policy of containing communism. Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri on May 8, 1884, the son of John Anderson Truman, a cattle trader and farmer, and Martha Young Truman. He was a distant relative of John Tyler, the tenth president of the United States. Harry attended grade school and high school in Independence, Mo. As a child with impaired vision, and having a fear of injury while wearing eyeglasses, he eschewed sports and normal childhood activities, spending most of his time reading. Later, he made the statement, "By the time I was 13 or 14 years old, I had read all the books in the Independence Public Library." His high school history teacher, Mathilda Brown, said of him, "I doubt if there was a student in any high school in the country who knew more of the history of the United States than Harry did." Truman also took piano lessons, and throughout his life, loved to play for his own enjoyment and for others.

Truman opposed Stalin’s moves. Mistrust grew as both sides broke wartime agreements. Stalin failed to honor pledges to hold free elections in Eastern Europe. Truman refused to honor promises to send reparations from the defeated Germany to help rebuild the war-devastated USSR. This hostility became known as the Cold War.

Harry S Truman - 33rd President of the United States
President Harry S. Truman and Brig. Gen. Harry Vaughan arriving at Gatow Airport in Berlin, Germany for the Potsdam Conference., 07/15/1945 (National Archives) Harry S Truman (May 8, 1884 - December 26, 1972) was the 33rd (1945 - 1953) President of the United States. Properly, the "S" in Harry S Truman should have no period after it. "S" is not an abbreviation for a middle name; it is his middle name, itself. Truman served in the United States Senate, representing Missouri, prior to becoming Vice President under Franklin Delano Roosevelt in March 1945. When Roosevelt died, Truman became President, and presided over the events ending World War II . It was Truman who made the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. He also established the Truman Doctrine to help fight communism is Greece and Turkey.

HARRY S. TRUMAN 33rd President of the United States In the election of 1944 President Franklin Roosevelt chose Senator Harry S. Truman to be his vice presidential candidate. On April 12, 1945 Roosevelt died and Truman became the 33rd president. In 1945 he made the decision to drop two atomic bombs on Japan, finally ending the war. Truman steered the U.S. through the post-war period with colorful, no-nonsense harangues that have since grown legendary. He was re-elected in 1948 in a contest many expected him to lose to the Republican candidate, Thomas Dewey. (A famous photograph shows Truman holding up a premature edition of the Chicago Tribune with the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman.") Growing discontent with the U.S. involvement in Korea led Truman to give up politics at the end of his second term. He was succeeded as president by Dwight D. Eisenhower
