( Last Update: 2003/09/26) I. Bilateral Political Relations On 20 June 1974, the People's Republic of China and Trinidad and Tobago formally established diplomatic relations. In April 1975, China set up its embassy in Trinidad and Tobago. So far Trinidad and Tobago has no embassy in China. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral friendship has been consolidated and developed continuously. China and Trinidad and Tobago have been conducting effective cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, trade, culture and military. They have enjoyed understanding of and support for each other in international affairs. On November 5-11, 1974, Prime Minister Eric Williams of Trinidad and Tobago visited China. It was the first visit to China by the head of the Trinidad and Tobago government. Premier Zhou Enlai and Chairman Mao Zedong received him respectively. Upon the conclusion of the visit, the two sides issued a press communique, announcing that they would exchange students and trade delegations and hold trade fairs. On January 10-17, 1975, Vice-Minister of Fuel Chemical Industry Tang Ke led a Chinese petroleum delegation to visit Trinidad and Tobago. It was the first official delegation from China to visit Trinidad and Tobago. Governor General Ellis Clarke and Prime Minister Eric Williams met with the delegation.

Trinidad and Tobago Program
Introduction
St. Lawrence University in conjunction with Pacific Lutheran University offers students a program that introduces them to the culture, history and complexity of Trinidad and Tobago. This spring semester program provides about five SLU students an opportunity to join PLU students in studying the rich and varied culture of the two-island nation. The program includes a one-month orientation course, a field study course in Caribbean culture and society that runs the entire semester, and direct enrollment in two courses of their choice at the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Trinidad and Tobago are the southernmost islands of the Caribbean archipelago, and are geologically an extension of the South American continent. Trinidad is separated from Venezuela by the 7-mile (11km) straits of the Gulf of Paria. We chose Trinidad and Tobago as the site of our Caribbean program for its blend of African, Indian, and Caribbean cultures. Home Off-Campus Programs On Campus Academics International Students ...

Tobago and its twin island, Trinidad, are the Caribbean's odd couple. 'Little sister' Tobago is relaxed, slow-paced and largely undeveloped. Trinidad is a densely populated, thriving island with a cosmopolitan population and strong regional influence. It's famous for hosting the loudest and wildest Carnival in the Caribbean, whereas on Tobago the oceanside hotels are casual, the reefs are calm and protected and the beaches are good. Indulge both the laid-back and the energetic sides of your personality by spending time on both islands. Landstat image of Trinidad showing sediment plumes from the Orinoco, and their area of influence on the coastal waters of Trinidad. Processing and enhancement carried out by the Remote Sensing Laboratory of the Institute of Marine Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago. Back to Top Another major influence on our islands marine environment is through the seasonal outflow of freshwater from the Orinoco Delta. The turbidity of the waters particularly around Trinidad attest to the large sediment loads that the Orinoco discharges to our shores, and is responsible for the brackish bathing waters of our south and gulf coasts. The freshwater and heavy sediment load gradually become diluted through the mixture with saline ocean waters. A notable feature of Orinoco discharge is floating vegetation torn from the river banks far inland. This phenomenon is thought to be responsible for the continuing colonization of the southwestern peninsula by both plants and animals.

by Merle Hodge The very business of choosing between 'People' and 'Peoples' of Trinidad and Tobago for the title of this chapter is charged with emotive, cross-purpose argument. Even more than the term 'West Indian', the definition of a Trinidadian is far from cut and dried. Perhaps the epitome of a Trinidadian is the child in the third row class with a dark skin and crinkly plaits who looks at you out of decidedly Chinese eyes and announces herself as Jacqueline Maharaj. The strains which converge in her may be African, Indian, Chinese, French, Spanish. She speaks English will speak standard English on occasion but is most comfortable in a dialect of English which bears the imprint of French, Spanish, Hindi and African influences and is the common property of all her variegated classmates. And in this dialect children will formulate racial insults:
Coolie, coolie Come for roti, All the roti done.
Roti is an Indian food which today forms part of the normal diet of the entire population. It is eaten with great relish by everyone, as are the Indian barah, channa, polori and aloo-pie that all schoolchildren, of any racial description, spend their pennies on. Some of the most prosperous roti establishments are run by Trinidadians of African descent.
Nigger is a nation Damn botheration Give them a kick and Send them in the station.

Trinidad WITH ALMOST 150,000 people of Trinidadian origin in Canada, the impact of this small group on Canadian culture and social life has been profound. The most evident impact has been in the field of popular culture. The pre-Lenten festival, Caribana (celebrated in Canada during the summer), introduces many non-Trinidadians to the imaginative artistic and musical creations associated with this event. At the Mas(querade) camps expert artisans build wire-framed costumes while steel pan masters teach music to young students. Apart from these special Trinidadians are the thousands who have migrated to Canada in search of a better life. They have provided Canada with a wealth of teachers, nurses, civil servants, lawyers, doctors, engineers, skilled artisans, and an understanding of living in a multicultural society. One way to offset the problems faced in Canada has been to establish voluntary organizations, church groups, and service associations such as the Trinidad-Canada Association, Caribana Association and the Indo-Caribbean Association. Also, a common Caribbean experience links people to other pan-Caribbean or pan-Black organizations such as the National Black Coalition, the United Negro Improvement Association, the Black Heritage Association, and the Caribbean Canadian Business and Professionals Association. Equally, Trinidadians have an active religious life. In particular, churches of Roman Catholic, Anglican, Baptist, and Presbyterian denominations count many Trinidadians as participants, especially those of French and African heritage. Asian-Indian Trinidadians have created several Muslim mosques and Hindu mundirs to attend to their spiritual needs.
