Trinidad can be truly described as the birthplace of calypso, limbo, soca and, of course, the steelband. It is a richly cosmopolitan country, comprising of people whose ancestry were Africans, Indians, Creole who are a mixture of two different ethnicities - usually Black and Indian, French, Spanish, Chinese, Lebanese, Syrians, Americans, Venezuelans, and some of the original settlers, the Amerindians. The largest non-secular groups are of the Christian faith, followed by those of the Hindu, Islamic and tradition African faiths, especially Orisha. Noteworthy Trinidadians are writers V.S. Naipaul, recent Nobel Prize winner for Literature, Earl Lovelace, and Samuel Selvon. Carnival artists Peter Minshall, Edmond Hart and Stephen Deryk; philosopher C.L.R. James; cricketer Brian Lara, holder of the world records for the most runs in a match and also holder for the most runs in a Test Match and the world's greatest calypsonians, the Mighty Sparrow.

The culture of trinidad and tobago. The culture of trinidad and tobago is a reflectionof a creative and vibrant, ethnically mixed and cosmopolitan society.
    http://www.gov.tt/about/culture.html
The Culture of Trinidad and Tobago The culture of Trinidad and Tobago is a reflection of a creative and vibrant, ethnically mixed and cosmopolitan society. The rhythmic sounds of the steelband music, the pulsating beat of the tassa drums, the entertaining calypsos and chutney songs, the romantic swaying of paranderos at parang time, all tell the tale of a people emerging from four centuries of colonialism, independence and republic rule. The contribution of the East Indians to national cultural survival is of tremendous significance. The lighting up for Divali, the rhythmic swaying of the Holi Dancers at Phagwah, East Indian planting and harvesting songs, all bear open testimony to the rich cultural diversity of a people in a land where "every creed and race find an equal place." In a land where a blend of Spanish, French, English, African, East Indian, Chinese, Portuguese, Syrian and other minority groups tell the story of togetherness as a people, it is becoming more and more evident that programmes on culture must be given priority. The Trinidad Carnival has been described in many circles as the "world's greatest festival." It continues to attract thousands of visitors yearly. Started from mere mockery of pre-colonial landlords by their `inferiors', the festival has grown into a rich reserve of craftsmanship, song and music that must today be the envy of many nations.

Trinidad and Tobago is a land made up of people of many different ethnic origins, except for a very few, we all live in peace and harmony many times side by side, it is not uncommon to find a Hindu temple next to a Muslim Mosque with the people of different religions worshipping in their own way in peace. We therefore have many religious festivals and more recently some that celebrate the music and culture of the peoples of Trinidad and Tobago. Below are some of the festivals and links to some events happening annually in Trinidad and Tobago.
    Carnival

    b c d ... z a Abrus precatorius L, FABACEAE
Common name: jumbie beads, crab's eyes, wild liquorice
Precatory-pea - Abrus precatorius seeds contain a chemical called abrin, which is highly toxic. A single well-masticated seed can kill an adult human. The seeds of this plant are imported into a number of countries on necklaces and perhaps on other decorative items. These attractive seeds are shiny, red, and black and about 5-8mm long. The plant is a slender twiner with alternately placed compound leaves. Each leaf has about 20 pairs of narrow, oblong leaflets , looking like a delicate feather. The rose to purple flowers are crowded at the end of a stalk. Fruits are short, inflated pods, splitting open when mature to reveal the round, hard and shiny seeds which are scarlet but black at the base. The plant is native to the tropics. It grows by the seashore among the undergrowth and in hedges.
POISONOUS . Seeds when broken or chewed or when the external coat is removed are toxic. The highly attractive seeds are sought after by children for beads. They are sometimes made into necklaces and rosaries. Seeds are extremely poisonous if cracked; a single one, if swallowed can be fatal. Also deadly to livestock.

Probably the worst kept secret in Tobago. But in this case it's none the worse for the telling. Ask anyone what the island is best known for and I guarantee, crab and dumplings on Store Bay will be in the top three. Nestled at the back of the beach facilities at Store Bay, these kitchens house some of Tobago's finest cooks who daily prepare a variety of local eats and drinks. Foremost among these is the local sea crab which is richly curried, and served with healthy portions of dumplings. Some tips to properly appreciate this meal:
  • budget at least an hour or two, discard the flimsy plastic fork and dig in with your fingers, show no shame or remorse about licking aforementioned curry-stained fingers, plan for a post-meal siesta!
