Tobago: Culture, Calypso and Sexuality Education I have just returned from a one-month visit to the island of Tobago, which is part of the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago. I am Canadian, but my mother is from Trinidad and my parents own and operate a guesthouse in Tobago. The incidence of HIV/AIDS on the small island of Tobago (pop. 51, 000) is the highest in the Caribbean, and especially high among the youth population. Young people in Tobago have many beliefs and misconceptions in how the disease is spread and how it can be controlled. Personally, in my short visit, I attended two funerals that were most likely AIDS related. Most people are reluctant to talk about AIDS, especially the family of the deceased who might then become labeled as carriers themselves. Trinidad and Tobago has a strong and distinct culture that includes music, dancing, drinking and partying in a very sexual manner. Young people become very comfortable with their sexuality because of the culture and have few inhibitions. However, despite their very sex-positive culture, young people in Trinidad and Tobago are not adequately educated about safer sex. This is especially apparent in Tobago where the rate of HIV/AIDS infection is 100 percent higher than the country as a whole.

culture of trinidad tobago. Travel to trinidad tobago with Banwari.trinidad s Carnival is the most outrageous in the Caribbean.
    http://www.destinationplanner.com/north_america/trinidad_and_tobago/culture.html
Banwari Trinidad's Carnival is the most outrageous in the Caribbean. Integral to the festivities is the music of the steel drum (pan), which was invented in Trinidad half a century ago using the hammered-out ends of discarded oil drums. Panyards, where steel drum bands practice in the evenings, abound in Port of Spain and are particularly active with the decibels in the weeks preceding Carnival. Calypso, a medium for political and social satire, has roots on Trinidad. It stems back to the days when slaves sang in patois, mocking their colonial masters. The Mighty Sparrow, long-time king of calypso, is a Trinidadian native, as are many of the Caribbean's up-and-coming calypso stars. Today, the music of indentured servants from India has also become an integral part of Trinidad's musical repertoire. A number of internationally known writers hail from Trinidad, including VS and Shiva Naipaul, Samuel Selvon and CLR James. St Lucian native Derek Walcott, the 1992 Nobel Prize winner for literature, lived in Trinidad for much of his adult life and is an active advocate for local theater projects. Cricket is the most popular sport, though you could be forgiven for thinking it was an art form or quasi religion.

More than 'sea-sun-sand', discover rich Tobago culture beyond our turquoise beaches...this island is alive with laid-back villages containing a rich cultural heritage.
What a Caribbean stereotype! Glorious honey sand beaches, waters swarming with tropical fish, fresh smelling rainforests and a relaxed bunch of locals. Who could ask for more? What makes it even better, is that Tobago is one of the least developed islands of the Caribbean - so it's the pure, original thing! On Tobago, you'll feel as if you've traveled back in time a century or more. Barefooted boys lead goats along winding roads flanked by bamboo thickets and glossy-leafed breadfruit trees, as crystal-clear streams cascade down mountainsides toward quaint villages with colonial English names like Roxborough, Scarborough, Plymouth and Charlotteville. Tobago, counts 210 species of birds, 17 species of mammals, including the crab-eating raccoon and the world's smallest alligator (found only on this island), 23 species of butterfly (including the Blue Emperor), five species of marine turtles, 24 species of snake (none poisonous), 16 species of lizard (including the green iguana), and 14 species of frog.

    History

Christopher Columbus landed on Trinidad on July 31, 1498, during his third voyage. At that time, the island was populated by a relatively peaceful Arawak subgroup called Igneri, who engaged in primitive agriculture, and the fierce Caribs.
Culture: The people of Trinidad and Tobago enjoy a rich cultural tradition. The distinctive West Indian musical form of the calypso originated in Trinidad during the 1800's. The calypso music, which is now part of the West Indian people's way of life, is a cultural and artistic expression of the political, economic, and social situation. It has been described as a development of African folk music, with French creole and Spanish influences.
