Calypso, a medium for political and social satire, has roots on Trinidad. It stems back to the days when slaves sang in patois, mocking their colonial masters. The Mighty Sparrow, long-time king of calypso, is a Trinidadian native, as are many of the Caribbean's up-and-coming calypso stars. Today, the music of indentured servants from India has also become an integral part of Trinidad's musical repertoire. Integral to Trinidad's outrageous Carnival festivities is the music of the steel drum (pan), which was invented in Trinidad half a century ago using the hammered-out ends of discarded oil drums. Panyards, where steel drum bands practice in the evenings, abound in Port of Spain and, particularly in the weeks preceding Carnival, the decibels go through the roof. A number of internationally known writers hail from Trinidad, including VS and Shiva Naipaul, Samuel Selvon and CLR James. St Lucian native Derek Walcott, the 1992 Nobel prize winner for literature, lived in Trinidad for much of his adult life and is an active advocate for local theatre projects.

Culture of Trinidad and Tobago The islands of Trinidad and Tobago are famous for their steel band music. This music is an important part of Carnival, the biggest celebration of the year on the islands. Carnival is a giant celebration that happens before Lent every year. There are many parties and parades where thousands of people dress up in fantastic costumes and dance the calypso. It is very colorful and lots of fun for everyone. Trinidad and Tobago also have their own university and many local artists and writers. There are theaters that put on plays and many musical concerts and celebrations. For sports, people enjoy soccer, rugby, cricket, horse racing, and boat racing. There are powerboat races between the two islands. Home Geography People History ... Author

Trinidad and Tobago History
Trinidad and Tobago were first seen by Columbus in 1498 on his third visit to the New World. He named Trinidad after the Holy Trinity, which he saw represented by three peaks on the southern coast. The island was settled by the Spanish, but the colony struggled until Spain granted land to Roman Catholics from other Caribbean islands. As a result, many French planters came to the island and brought with them large numbers of slaves. In 1797, the British invaded and the island became a British holding. When Britain banned the slave trade, indentured workers from India were brought to the island to work the sugarcane plantations. Tobago was little more than a pirate haunt until sugarcane and coffee were planted in its rich soil. The island changed hands many times before it became a British Crown Colony in 1877. It united politically with Trinidad in 1888. The islands became an independent nation in 1962 and a republic in 1976.
