    • Calculate cos(3u) in terms of cos(u)
      cos(2u+u) = cos(2u)cos(u)-sin(2u)sin(u) = (cos (u)-sin (u))cos(u)-2sin(u)cos(u)sin(u) = cos (u) - sin (u)cos(u)-2sin (u)cos(u) = cos (u) -3sin (u)cos(u) cos (u) -3cos(u)+3cos (u) 4cos (u) -3cos(u) In the same way sin(3u) = -4sin (u) -3sin(u)

      sin(p)-sin(q) = cos(q)-cos(p) 2cos((p+q)/2)sin((p-q)/2) = -2sin((p+q)/2)sin((q-p)/2) cos((p+q)/2) = sin((p+q)/2) p+q cot(-) 2

Frequently Asked Questions About Trigonometry
Back to Dave's home page Q: What is trigonometry?
A: Trigonometry is the study of how the sides and angles of a triangle are related to each other. Q: WHAT? That's all?
A: Yes, that's all. It's all about triangles, and you can't get much simpler than that. Q: You mean trigonometry isn't some big, ugly monster that makes students turn green, scream, and die?
A: No. It's just triangles. Q: Oh. But isn't that boring?
A: We'll try to make it a little more fun by letting you play around with the triangles interactively. Let's start. Click on a topic to go to that page. If this is your first visit to these pages, we recommend that you start with the first item in the list. This material assumes that you know:
  • How to measure angles
  • That a right angle is is 90 degrees
  • The sides of a triangle: the base , the height , and the hypotenuse
If you aren't familiar with these concepts, you'll have to ask your math teacher to assist you with them. J. David Eisenberg

History of Ganit (Mathematics)
Introduction
Ganit (Mathematics) has been considered a very important subject since ancient times. We find very elaborate proof of this in Vedah (which were compiled around 6000 BC). The concept of division, addition et-cetera was used even that time. Concepts of zero and infinite were there. We also find roots of algebra in Vedah. When Indian Beez Ganit reached Arab, they called it Algebra. Algebra was name of the Arabic book that described Indian concepts. This knowledge reached to Europe from there. And thus ancient Indian Beez Ganit is currently referred to as Algebra.

http://id.mind.net/~zona/mmts/trigonometryRealms/introduction/rightTriangle/trig
Trigonometry and Right Triangles Introduction Trigonometry Mathematics Contents ... Home First of all, think of a trigonometry function as you would any general function. That is, a value goes in and a value comes out. If that does not seem quite clear, go see The Definition of a Function and What is f(x)? The names of the three primary trigonometry functions are: sine cosine tangent These are abbreviated this way: sine.....sin cosine.....cos tangent.....tan So, instead of writing f(x) , we will write: sin(x) cos(x) tan(x) Often, in general mathematics notation the parentheses are dropped from the above examples. Therefore, the notation will often look like this: sin x cos x tan x In Zona Land we will keep the parentheses. Now, as usual, the input value is x. This input value usually represents an angle. For the sine function, when the input value is 30 degrees, the output value is 0.5. We would write that statement this way: Below is a listing of several popular input and output values for the three main trigonometry functions. You do not have work at memorizing this table. After you use trigonometry for a while, these values will be remembered quite easily. At this point our central issues will revolve around these questions: Where do these numbers come from?

TRIGONOMETRY
During this tutorial you will be asked to perform calculations involving trigonometric functiions. You will need a calulator to proceed.
Panel 1 The purpose of this tutorial is to review with you the elementary properties of the trigonometric functions. Facility with this subject is essential to success in all branches of science, and you are strongly urged to review and practice the concepts presented here until they are mastered. Let us consider the right-angle triangle shown in Panel 1. The angle at C is a right angle and the angle at A we will call q . The lengths of the sides of the triangle we will denote as p, q and r. From your elementary geometry, you know several things about this triangle. For example, you know the Pythagorean relation,
hypotenuse , is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides. We know other things. For example, we know that if the lengths of the three sides of any triangle p, q and r are specified, then the whole triangle is determined, angles included. If you think about this for a moment, you will see it is correct. If I give you three sticks of fixed length and told you to lay them down in a triangle, there's only one triangle which you could make. What we would like to have is a way of relating the angles in the triangle, say q , to the lengths of the sides.

33. Trigonometry
trigonometry. You have now learned the simple rules of trigonometry which, with practice, should equip you for your introductory science courses.
http://www.physics.uoguelph.ca/tutorials/trig/trigonom2.html
TRIGONOMETRY
Panel 7 We should now investigate the rules for these functions in other quadrants as shown in panel 7. In the first case, we see that the angle to be dealt with is a q q ) = (-r)/q = -sin( a ) = -sin( q Similarly cos( q ) = (-p)/q = -cos( a ) = -cos( q q ) = (-r)/(-p) = r/p = tan( a ) = tan( q
Therefore,
Panel 8 Finally, in the right-hand side of Panel 7 is the last case. The angle of concern q a ), and p and q are positive while r is negative. As before, we get the following relations given in Panel 8. Notice only the cosine is positive.
Panel 9 There is a simple rule by which you can remember all of these results, summarized in Panel 9. Notice in the first quadrant, all the functions are positive; in the second quadrant, only the sine is positive; in the third, only the tangent is positive; and in the fourth quadrant, only the cosine is positive. The little mnemonic at the right, called the CAST Rule , tells you which function is positive in each quadrant. And the c a s and t stand for cosine all sine and tangent Let us now look at a graph of these functions. But before we examine it in detail, let's see what we can learn just from inspection.
