The "hammer" is a nine-pound metal ball attached by wire to a triangular handle. The athlete stands inside a five-meter-diameter circle and can make as many as three turns before launching the hammer as far as she can. The athlete with the farthest throw wins the competition.

Triathlon Triathlons began as a different form of training for marathon and 10-kilometer, or 10K, runners who wanted a break in their regular training programs. Since 1978, when the first Ironman Triathlon was held in Hawaii, the sport has grown tremendously. In September 1994, the International Olympic Committee named triathlon as a medal sport for the 2000 Olympic Summer Games. Click a link to

What is Triathlon?
A triathlon is a continuous multi-sport event comprised of swimming, cycling and running. Although three sports are involved only one time is important – the overall time! That is why the transitions between each discipline are so important and require rehearsing almost as much as the three sports. Distances vary from local sports centre races of upwards of 400m swim; 10 miles bike and 3 miles run, right up to the Ironman distance of 2.4 miles swim; 112 miles bike and a full marathon run! There is no doubt that at the elite end of the sport it is a gruelling test of skill and endurance but as in marathon running and many other sports there are thousands of people who compete not for glory, but for fun and a healthy lifestyle. Championship distances have been set at:-

Les McDonald, president of the International Triathlon Union (ITU), says Beijing needs a "tougher" route to host the Olympic triathlon in 2008. McDonald said the suggested route provided by the Beijing Olympic organizers is "a little too flat" to make the Olympic competition highly challenging for the athletes. The route, which will be used for the Beijing International Triathlon in September, runs through the Ming Tombs Resort in the northern suburb of Changping District. "We need hills there," McDonald said. "The rest is appropriate, but we need hills for biking. We are looking forward for a tough course in order to be competitive." He said the sport has changed dramatically in the past decade and spectators have become much more demanding. "The sport used to be held in very low places, very nice and a lot of fun. But now the audience will gets bored if the competition is not really exciting," McDonald said. He suggested Beijing Olympic organizers "build" some mountains to improve the current route, citing the example of the man-made island in Japan.

Home News Investment Culture ... Beijing Portal >> Top News Beijing Olympic triathlon route needs trial, ITU president says Beijing Portal
The triathlon competition route for the Beijing Olympic Games, which has not been ratified by the International Triathlon Union (ITU), needs to be tested in the inaugural Beijing International Triathlon in September, ITU President Les McDonald said here Monday. Les McDonald told Xinhua that he inspected the route around theShisanling Reservoir, 50 kilometers northwest to Beijing, which will be tried in the Beijing International Triathlon slated for September 12. "However," he said, "we have to wait after the Beijing International to listen to participants' opinion before the final decision is made." Among all the competitions in the Beijing Games, triathlon is the only one whose venue and route have not been decided. Beijing had planned to put it in the Ti'anmen area, which can best represent Beijing and China, but gave up due to technical reasons. McDonald thinks that the Shisanling route is OK but needs improvement. "We haven't got an ideal alternative up to now. A lot of work still need to be done to improve the current route," he said.

The men's team will comprise former world junior champion Tim Don, Andrew Johns and Paul Amey. Michelle Dillon, Jodie Swallow and Julie Dibens will compete in the women's event. "The performances of our triathlon squad over the past few years suggests we can be successful in Athens," said BOA chief executive Simon Clegg. All six athletes have previously competed at the top level and team leader Graeme Maw said their wealth of experience should prove useful. "The nature of the sport allows for many different scenario on race days, and with proven medallists across the board we should be competitive in many of these," he said. "With four of the six - Don, Johns, Dibens and Dillon - having been through triathlon's Olympic debut in Sydney, we will also be carrying experience to deal with the unique environment. "
