Yet the Geordie who built the platform for Great Britain, with its strong squad, to make a medal-winning start to these Games will not be thanked by his home country for any success. "The story of hero to villain" was how Dave Bellingham, the British team manager, referred to McDonald today. McDonald is the Primo Nebiolo of his sport, the autocratic - many say bullying - president of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) who, through alleged vote rigging and other manipulative tactics, has managed to hold onto his position through the 11-year history of the world governing body which he formed. However, while his political skills may be compared to Nebiolo’s, the late president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, his commercial shortcomings have made him many an enemy among those who seek to professionalise the sport. "Les pushed for our sport to get into the Olympics and we need to give him credit for that," Lessing, an elite triathlete for ten years and favourite for the men’s gold medal on Sunday, said. "Unfortunately, I think the sport has lost its direction. I am speaking as an athlete who is trying to make a career out of this and, to a certain extent, we have not managed to attract title or major corporate sponsors. The coverage will include the Mooloolaba Triathlon, beaming vision to a national audience and ensure that the appeal of the region is showcased throughout Australia. The 2004 Reed Property Group Mooloolaba Triathlon was a fabulous showcase for sport and highlighting the broad appeal of Mooloolaba as a tourist destination. An estimated crowd of 20,000 turned out to witness the three day sporting and entertainment festival which attracted 3,500 competitors. They were treated to an action packed weekend kicking off on Friday with Peter Nowill and Mirinda Carfrae recording first ever wins in the Ryders Twilight 5km Run and Hot Pipi's taking out the Get Wines Direct Wine Waiters race on Friday. The Sustagen Mooloolaba Triathlon Seminar was a new addition to this year's program and proved to be a popular one. On Saturday The Laser Sight Centres Mooloolaba Ocean Swim was a nail biting affair as it came down to three on a wave with local Dean Mercer outsprinting defending Champion Leigh Bool to the line with New Zealander Kate Brookes-Peterson taking out the women's race. This was followed up by 300 kids taking part in the PURA Milk Mooloolaba Superkidz Triathlon. The day was rounded out with the big New Zealander Jarrod Poad taking out the Sustgaen Mooloolaba Cycling Grand Prix in front of a huge crowd on Saturday evening on the downtown Mooloolaba beachfront circuit.
