By Jim Starr It is perhaps unsurprising that triathlon’s meteoric rise from its inception in California 25 years ago to its inaugural appearance as an Olympic sport this past summer has fired the imagination of multisporters throughout the US. Although this column has been primarily occupied with Olympic coverage this year, local athletes have been active and productive (even re productive) in 2000. Still, some important local news does derive from the Olympics. Zeiger, Kemper Honored Joanna Zeiger , the Johns Hopkins University Ph.D. candidate who afforded US fans their greatest hope in Australia in September with her eventual fourth-place finish, was recently named US Olympic Committee (USOC) Triathlete of the Year for 2000. The 30 year-old genetic epidemiology graduate student joins Hunter Kemper, the male Olympic trial winner, in receiving this accolade. Nominated by the USA Triathlon (USAT) Board of Directors, both are now eligible to be USOC’s SportsWoman and SportsMan of the Year selected from a pool of 49 men and 49 women athletes. Last year’s winners were swimming’s Jenny Thompson and inspirational Tour de France winner (and former triathlete) Lance Armstrong.

    History
The triathlon entered the Olympics faster than any other sport. Created in 1974, it became an Olympic sport in 2000. The original triathlon, as represented in the Ironman competitions, is made up of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycling leg, and a full marathon of 26 miles, 385 yards. However, in the Olympics, as in other internationally triathlons, the distances are much shorter: a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bicycle ride, and 10-kilometer run. Top of page

The triathlon has only been in existence since 1974, but it will make its debut as an Olympic medal sport in the Sydney Games. It consists of three disciplines - swimming, cycling and running. The race is continuous with no breaks between legs. A quick transition from each leg to the next is crucial. A maximum of 50 athletes will compete in each of the men's and women's events.
Swimming The first leg of the triathlon is a swim around Farm Cove in Sydney Harbour. Competitors may use any stroke. Swimming caps are mandatory. Length: .093 miles
Cycling The second leg of the race is cycling. Cyclists will often ride in packs to benefit from lower wind resistance. Helmets and covered torsos are mandatory. Length: 24.8 miles
Running The last leg of the triathlon is the run. The athletes may run or walk. Shoes and covered torsos are mandatory. Length: 6.2 miles Sources: International Olympic Committee; Olympic Coordination Authority; United States Olympic Committee; The World Almanac 2000; "Rules of the Game;" "Summer Games Access;" "What's What in Sports;" Newhouse Newspapers; AFP seattletimes.com home

Making Olympic History New York Times At the first modern Olympics in 1896, Melpomene became the first female to compete, although unofficially, in the games. Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

Get ready for the 2004 LA Triathlon and the "Battle of Champions, " between Chris McCormack and Craig Walton. Between these two they have won all four of the LA Triathlons and are arguably the finest two at this distance ever in the sport. They have never gone head-to-head in an Olympic Distance, non-drafting event. They believe it will bring out their best and the best in the remainder of the field trying to beat them. We anticipate our greatest race ever and are working toward finalizing our first criterium style run course for LA. For those of you who have never seen this format, it will create a stadium effect which will allow spectators to see the athletes several times as they run through the finish line area. "Racing Waldo always brings out the best in me. He's a tough competitor and a strong athlete. The course in LA is suited to both of us. We are both strong bikers and the open roads in LA set up the entire race. I am excited about the prospects of racing head to head with Craig on a course that we have both been very successful on in the past. It will be an exciting event and I am eager to get back to LA and be successful again." Chris McCormack "I'm thrilled to be coming back and going for a three-peat at the LA Triathlon. It's going to be a fast and furious race with myself and Chris McCormack both going for our third win. I rank LA as one of the best races in the world and to top it all off you are racing past some of the most famous land marks in the world. I'm so excited to return to LA!"

...USA triathlon Executive Director Steve Locke has announced the selection of Irving, Texas as the site for the first USA triathlon Olympic trials. The triathlon will take place in the Las Colinas Urban center, May 20-21, 2000. Race activity, including the swim start in Lake Carolyn, finish, and transition area will be based around Williams Square.
"Irving is a great city to host the inaugural USA triathlon Olympic trials," Locke said. "The 2012 Bid Committee and the new Dallas/Fort Worth Sports Commission put together an excellent bid and I am confident the trials will be a world class event that helps our sport continue to grow. The combination of a great venue and a supportive corporate and community base made the Irving site a unanimous decision. It's always nice to feel truly embraced by a community, especially a world class area like Dallas/Fort Worth."
"Irving definitely benefits from a long association with outstanding sporting events. We're delighted with Irving's selection as site of the 2000 triathlon Olympic trials and look forward to continuing to work aggressively to bring additional sporting events to Irving," stated ICVB Executive Director Jim Clark.
