Triathlon

The triathlon has only been in existence since 1974, but it will make its debut as an Olympic sport in the Sydney Games. It consists of three disciplines - swimming, cycling and running.
The Basics
  • The race is continuous with no breaks between legs. A quick transition from each leg to the next is crucial. A maximum of 50 athletes will compete in each of the men's and women's events.

Swimming
The first leg of the triathlon is a swim around Farm Cove in Sydney Harbour. Competitors may use any stroke. Swimming caps are mandatory. Length: 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) Cycling The second leg of the race is cycling. Cyclists will often ride in packs to benefit from lower wind resistance. Hel-mets and covered torsos are mandatory. Length: 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) Running The last leg of the triathlon is the run. The athletes may run or walk. Shoes and covered torsos are mandatory. Length: 10 kilometer run (6.2 miles)

Reports of triathlon's Olympic demise are greatly exaggerated
By Timothy Carlson
IT Senior Correspondent
This report filed August 29, 2002

Just when triathlon thought it was safely in the Olympic family, news of a new threat appeared this week in the media. Or did it? Months after the last emergency, when International Triathlon Union-European Triathlon Union squabbles threatened to boot the sport from the International Olympic Committee family, a new alert materialized from an Agence France-Press article on three proposed new Olympic sports for the 2008 games in Beijing. AFP Irish writer Erskine McCullough wrote that the IOC is considering including golf, a Chinese martial arts called wushu, and seven-man rugby. The catch for triathlon is that under IOC President Jacques Rogge's new regime, the inclusion of any new sport must be matched by the departure of another sport. In his August 26 article, McCullough wrote: "The three facing the ax are believed to be triathlon, baseball and softball." ITU president Les McDonald told McCullough "If we are thrown out of the Olympics, it will kill triathlon as we know it. I simply see no logic in the plan. We are spectator friendly and television friendly. And we have a huge fan base throughout the world."

Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History TRIATHLON A swim club in Marseilles, France, held a three-sport event in 1921, consisting of a bicycle leg of about 7 kilometers, a 5-kilometer run, and a 200-meter swim. It was called the Course Des Trois Sports (Race of Three Sports). Evidently there was no follow-up on that, though, and it was more than 50 years before the modern triathlon was created. It grew out of a run-swim biathlon staged in San Diego by David Pain in 1972 to celebrate his 50th birthday. The birthday biathlon was repeated in 1973. One of the competitors, Jack Johnstone, enjoyed it so much that he decided to stage his own biathlon, and he enlisted the help of a friend, Don Shanahan. Shanahan suggested that a bicycle stage be added. The pair got the support of the San Diego Track Club, which announced a "Run, Cycle, Swim Triathlon" to be held on Sept. 25, 1974. The event was so successful that Johnstone and Shanahan decided to hold three more of them in 1975. In the meantime, the Coronado, CA, Optimists Club also sponsored a triathlon. It was the Ironman, though, that really caught the public eye and led to a major explosion of the new sport. John Collins, a U. S. Navy officer who competed in that first triathlon, took the idea to Hawaii, where he combined three major endurance races, the 3.8-kilometer Waikiki Rough Water Swim, the 180-kilometer Around-Oahu Bike Race and the 42.195-kilometer Honolulu Marathon, into a single event known as the Ironman Triathlon.

Half Olympic Triathlon Training - Novice
Introduction
As an athlete and coach I have, over the years, developed a number of training programs to develop the athletic abilities of myself and the athletes I have worked with. As many coaches will tell you, and quite rightly so, a training program has to be developed to meet the individual needs of the athlete and take into consideration many factors: gender, age, strengths, weaknesses, objectives, training facilities etc. As all athletes have different needs a single program suitable for all athletes is not possible. planning page. If the athlete is under 18 years of age then I do recommend that you read the page on coaching young athletes
Before You Start
Prior to starting any training program it is recommend that the athlete has a medical examination to ensure it is safe for him/her to do so.
Overview of the Training Program
The seasons training plan is based on six phases where each phase comprises of a repeated four week program. The work load in the first three weeks of the four week program increase each week (easy, medium, hard) and the fourth week comprises of active recovery and tests to monitor training progress. The aim of the four week cycles is to:
  • Build you up to a level of fitness (3 weeks) Test, recovery and adjustment of the training program (1 week)

Following the race is almost as tough as competing
Click here for more on this story Latest: Sunday September 17, 2000 10:09 AM SYDNEY, Australia The triathlon is supposed to be a grueling event. Apparently, it's too much of three good things: a swim in the bay, a bike down the path and a jog up the street. My belief: Exercise is best in moderation. No need complicating a workout with that many changes of clothes. Anyway, agreed, the competition is tough. But I'm here to tell you it's not so easy to watch, either. Listen to my story: I set out for the men's Olympic event Sunday morning and quickly found myself trapped inside the course, ringed entirely by the cycling and running circuits. This was a problem in that I didn't feel I needed 2 1/2 hours to get a feel for the thing. That is, I had planned to leave a little shy of the medal presentation.
