Friday, September 15 McDonald: From hero to villain
From David Powell in Sydney This is the weekend that Les McDonald has been dreaming of, plotting for, manoeuvring towards, ever since he had the idea that triathlon should be an Olympic sport. Yet the Geordie who built the platform for Great Britain, with its strong squad, to make a medal-winning start to these Games will not be thanked by his home country for any success. "The story of hero to villain" was how Dave Bellingham, the British team manager, referred to McDonald today. McDonald is the Primo Nebiolo of his sport, the autocratic - many say bullying - president of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) who, through alleged vote rigging and other manipulative tactics, has managed to hold onto his position through the 11-year history of the world governing body which he formed. However, while his political skills may be compared to Nebiolo’s, the late president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, his commercial shortcomings have made him many an enemy among those who seek to professionalise the sport. "Les pushed for our sport to get into the Olympics and we need to give him credit for that," Lessing, an elite triathlete for ten years and favourite for the men’s gold medal on Sunday, said. "Unfortunately, I think the sport has lost its direction. I am speaking as an athlete who is trying to make a career out of this and, to a certain extent, we have not managed to attract title or major corporate sponsors. We should now be asking questions like why, what have we done wrong?

It was called the Course Des Trois Sports (Race of Three Sports). Evidently there was no follow-up on that, though, and it was more than 50 years before the modern triathlon was created. It grew out of a run-swim biathlon staged in San Diego by David Pain in 1972 to celebrate his 50th birthday. The birthday biathlon was repeated in 1973. One of the competitors, Jack Johnstone, enjoyed it so much that he decided to stage his own biathlon, and he enlisted the help of a friend, Don Shanahan. Shanahan suggested that a bicycle stage be added. The pair got the support of the San Diego Track Club, which announced a "Run, Cycle, Swim Triathlon" to be held on Sept. 25, 1974. The event was so successful that Johnstone and Shanahan decided to hold three more of them in 1975. In the meantime, the Coronado, CA, Optimists Club also sponsored a triathlon. It was the Ironman, though, that really caught the public eye and led to a major explosion of the new sport. John Collins, a U. S. Navy officer who competed in that first triathlon, took the idea to Hawaii, where he combined three major endurance races, the 3.8-kilometer Waikiki Rough Water Swim, the 180-kilometer Around-Oahu Bike Race and the 42.195-kilometer Honolulu Marathon, into a single event known as the Ironman Triathlon.

History of the Triathlon
by Kelly Ehritz. A triathlon consists of three sports swimming, biking, and running. There are several race distances:
Sprint Olympic Half-Ironman Ironman Swim .5 mile .93 mile 1.2 miles 2.4 miles Bike 13 miles 24.8 miles 56 miles 112 miles Run 3.2 miles 6.2 miles 13.1 miles 26.2 miles
Race distances often vary somewhat from the table above, but most races fit pretty closely with the above distances.
The race starts at the shot of a gun as athletes begin their swim. Races can start off a dock with the athletes diving in. They can start with the participants already in the water behind the "start line." Races can also start on the beach with triathletes running in to the lake, ocean, etc. The swim is usually very crowded with alot of pushing and kicking to get ahead.
At the end of the swim, the athletes exit the water and start on the first transition, T1. They run to the bike racks, put on sneakers, and hope on their bike. Biking is the best time in the race to refuel on sports drinks and energy bars/gels.

History
The triathlon entered the Olympics faster than any other sport. Created in 1974, it became an Olympic sport in 2000. The original triathlon, as represented in the Ironman competitions, is made up of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycling leg, and a full marathon of 26 miles, 385 yards. However, in the Olympics, as in other internationally triathlons, the distances are much shorter: a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bicycle ride, and 10-kilometer run. Top of page

Brief Triathlon History
  • Triathlon was invented in the early 1970s by the San Diego Track club, as an alternative workout to the rigors of track training. The club’s first event consisted of a 10km run, an 8km cycle and a 500metre swim. In 1989, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in Avignon, France and the first official world championships were held. The official distance for triathlon was set at a 1.5 km swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run taking from existing events in each discipline already on the Olympic programme. This standard distance, now called ‘Olympic Distance’ is used for the ITU World Cup series and the Olympic Games. In 1994, at the IOC Congress in Paris, France, triathlon was awarded full medal status on the Olympic programme and made it’s debut at the 2000 summer games in Sydney, Australia. The women’s event took place on the first day with the men competing on day two. ITU now has over a hundred affiliated national federations around the world.

The Greek athletic games, otherwise commonly recognized as the Panhellenic Games, were an integral part of Greek life. They combined religion, sport, and music into extravagant festivals involving peoples throughout Mediterranean. Not only did they attract thousands of participants and spectators to their venues, but they also promoted solidarity among the various Greek city-states. By the Classical period, their influence was felt throughout Greece. There were four main games: the Olympic Games, Pythian Games, Nemean Games, and Isthmian Games. The games at Olympia were the oldest and most famous of these. They all began quite humbly as religious ceremonies. While the games had a small religious aspect throughout their history, this role diminished as time progressed. Mythological evidence suggests that the athletic events originally served as entertainment for humans and gods and were loosely associated with sacrificial offerings. At first they were purely local events most likely spanning two or three days, consisting only of dancing, running, and wrestling. The centrepiece of every Olympics is the track and field stadium. Stadium Australia has built the largest Olympic arena in history with 110,000 spectators able to see the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field program and the final of the men's soccer tournament. Under an agreement brokered by the Olympic Co-ordination Authority, the majority of the cost of the $A615 million stadium is being borne by the private sector with the NSW public having ultimate ownership of the venue. Stadium Australia has already hosted several world-class events including top-flight rugby league and union, American NFL and the FIFA All Stars.

    ABOUT TRIATHLON
Triathlon is one of the 2 new sports for the 2000 Olympic Games. It will be the FIRST event of the Games, with cameras cutting from the Opening Ceremonies to the start of the women's swim leg. The women's race will finish in front of the Sydney Opera House on Sept. 16. Triathlon consists of three combined disciplines: the swim, the bike and the run , in that order. Very simply, the first athlete across the finish line of the run is the winner of the event. Between each leg of the events is the t ransition area. This is the staging area where triathletes transfer from one discipline to the next from swimmer to cyclist to runner. Primarily important for its fenced-in pen of bike racks. Seconds won or lost in "transition" can amount to the difference in the outcome of the race. Each country in the 2000 Olympics may send a maximum of three men and three women.
