THE MOUNTAIN GUIDES OF TRENTINO The history of the alpine guides in Trentino began with the birth of alpinism in the Dolomites. Its protagonists are explorers from England, Germany, Austria and local mountain guides. The mountain guide’s profession has been subject to changes and development. Until the end of the 18 th century they were the guides of rich aristocrats keen on granting their name to a famous peak or wall. The modern alpine guide however, is a professional with not only a profound knowledge of the manifold traditional and modern alpine techniques but is also an expert in nature, culture and history. In those days and at present, the mountain guides are the authors of national and international alpine history. The Trentino Alpine Guide Association is preparing the guides for their professional life. In Trentino 220 alpine guides are registered; they are being distributed among 12 alpine schools and/or other types of guides’ associations. Practically in each valley of Trentino you can find an association of mountain guides which can provide information and advice. The alpine schools or guides’ associations are offering a vast range of activities and courses which can be booked directly. With a mountain guide on your side, a day in the mountains, a simple excursion through the forests of our National Parks or a climbing tour in the Dolomites, will become an unforgettable experience.

TREKKING IN SIKKIM In April 1995 I returned to the Himalayas to do another trek, this time in Sikkim. The trek was organised by The Trekking Company The road from the Indian plains up to Darjeeling climbs 7000' and follows the railway line used by the Toy Train. The railway often zig-zags its way up the mountains and crosses the road many times. Darjeeling - situated on a ridge at 7000' in the eastern Himalayas. On a clear day Kangchenjunga would be visible, but the thick haze of April meant we never saw the mountains from Darjeeling in all our time there. The mixture of British, Tibetan and mountaineering history make this an interesting place to visit. Trekker's Huts at Yuksom - where the walk begins. Huts are found at each campsite on the trek, and provided good shelter on the snowy afternoons higher up. From here the trail contours high above the Prek Chu River before beginning the steep ascent to the Dzongri plateau. Tshoka village at 10000', the only village on the trek. This is where the first views of the large mountains are seen. There are excellent forests in this area. Magnolias and rhododendrons were flowering when we were there. View of the Himalayas from a hill above our campsite at Dzongri. Kanchenjunga is at the back right of the photo. This area provides great views of the surrounding mountains and there are many herds of large yak grazing nearby.

My first trip to the Himalayas was in March 1987, when I did a month long trip in Nepal with Australian Himalayan Expeditions (now World Expeditions ). We did an eight day trek in the Everest region, walking from Lukla up to Thyangboche Monastery via Namche Bazaar, an eight day trek in the Annapurna region from Pokhara to Ghorepani, a few days amongst the wildlife in Chitwan National Park and sightseeing around the streets and temples of Kathmandu. Some photographs from that trip are contained below. Click on the thumbnails to see larger images: Durbar Square - Kathmandu. We spent a day in the city before the trek looking around the temples, shops and markets. A view of the Himalayas on the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. At the back right of the photo is Mt Everest and its cloud plume. The spectacular 45 minute flight went over the Nepalese foothills and provided good views of the eastern Himalayas. Namche Bazaar - Everest region. This is a major Sherpa village situated at 11000'. Across the valley is Mt Kwangde. From Lukla we walked for one and a half days up the Dudh Kosi valley to Namche. We spent a day visiting the nearby Sagarmartha National Park Visitors Centre and the Everest View Hotel, which was very run down when we were there. Thyangboche Monastery - Everest region (13000'). This place was the highlight of the trip. We walked from Namche to Thyangboche in cloud and snow and didn't see any views. The next day we awoke to a perfect morning in a snow-covered landscape with huge peaks all around.
