CONTACT SONIA ABNEY: (217) 355-9411 Ext 27 Doctoring Your Yard CHAMPAIGN, IL - Has your yard had a check-up lately? If not, better late than never, say plant healthcare experts. After all, a relatively new concept in professional landscape management - plant healthcare, or PHC - can both preserve and protect a homeowner's yard and pocketbook. Preventative care, frequent check-ups, early detection, informed decision-making, and routine treatments that provide long term, stable solutions have become vital parts of plant healthcare programs. The approach is multi-faceted and customer-driven, focusing on the health, growth, and beauty of a homeowner's yard. "It's like an HMO plan for your yard," says Jim Skiera, Executive Director for the International Society of Arboriculture. "Adopting a plant healthcare program can prevent problems or keep them from getting serious. When homeowners and professionals work together, everyone benefits - drastic, costly maintenance can be avoided while the value of the entire property increases." The basic premise behind PHC is that if a plant is tended to properly, natural defenses can be strengthened. Energy that would have been exerted on stressful factors is now applied to building up defense systems. Just like human health, plant health improves when hazardous factors are removed from the environment and check-ups are performed regularly.

Sprayers Available For Yard Care
Yard care sprayers are available in a wide range of sizes to accommodate every yard job. There are single-action hand sprayers, continuous-action hand sprayers, hose-end sprayers, hand-held sprayers and hand dusters. Examples include the Chapin model 1002 hand-held sprayer for small areas in the garden and the Chapin model 6006 hose-end sprayer, a 6-gallon capacity sprayer ideal for applying herbicides to broad leaf weeds.
Fertilizing With Your Sprayer
Fertilize your lawn every spring with a liquid fertilizer. Use a hose-end sprayer such as the Chapin Models 6006 and 6007. These sprayers connect easily to your garden hose. Walk in straight lines across your lawn, spraying the fertilizer back and forth in front of you. Walk at a slow pace to ensure that your lawn will be thoroughly fertilized.
After fertilizing, clean your sprayer by rinsing thoroughly with water to prevent corrosion of parts. For more detailed information on sprayer cleaning, see Chapin's Spraying Guide Series #25 - How To Clean And Maintain Your Sprayer
Lawn Mainenance
Spraying is an extremely efficient method of weed control. You can use a post-emergent herbicide to spot treat individual weeds like dandelions, crabgrass and chickweed. A sprayer such as the Chapin Model 2101 is perfect for individual weed control.

Improving Yard and Garden Care
Why Should You Be Concerned?
Your yard and garden might be the last places you would look for pollution problems, but behind beautiful landscapes are activities that may threaten both your health and the environment. On average, homeowners use 10 times more chemical fertilizers and pesticides per acre than farmers use on farmland. If applied improperly, these chemicals can find their way into drinking water wells and pollute nearby lakes and streams. Other problems occur when exposed soil washes away during a storm, harming wildlife habitat and choking waterways. Indiscriminate watering of lawns and gardens wastes large amounts of water. While it may seem that your part in pollution is minor, the effects of chemicals, soil loss, and wasted water from the hundreds or thousands of homes in your region can really add up.
How Can KY-A-Syst Help? This publication leads you through an evaluation of your home and property to determine pollution and health risks. After you have read this publication, walk around your home and property and answer the questions in the boxes, circling the answers that best apply. Your answers will help you become familiar with your yard and garden care practices so you can make changes to help protect your family's health and the environment.

Recycling in the Yard
THE CHALLENGE
Michigan Public Act 264 reads, "leaves, grass clippings, vegetable or other garden debris, shrubbery, or brush or tree trimmings less than 4 feet in length and 2 inches in diameter" will no longer be accepted in Michigan landfills or incinerators. THE SOLUTION
Three options offer you choices for handling yard trimmings in a way that's best for you and your yard.
  • 1. Most cities and villages, and some townships offer special collection programs for fall leaves, spring brush or winter holiday trees. Check with your local government office for more information. 2. Private drop-off sites and pick-up collection services, offered by waste haulers and yard care companies, accept yard trimmings for a fee. 3.Handling at least some yard trimmings in your own yard-by grass recycling, mulching or home composting-can save money and time while benefiting your yard.

WHY NOT JUST GRASSCYCLE?
More work does not always mean better results! Bagging your grass, hauling it, and throwing it out is a waste of your time and of your lawn's precious resources. Grasscycling simply means mowing your lawn and letting it lay. But won't that contribute to thatch? Not at all. Check out this excerpt from the University of Illinois: The primary component of thatch is turfgrass stems and roots. It accumulates as these plant parts buildup faster than they breakdown. Thatch problems are due to a combination of biological, cultural, and environmental factors. Cultural practices can have a big impact on thatch. For example, heavy nitrogen fertilizer applications or overwatering frequently contribute to thatch, because they cause the lawn to grow excessively fast. Avoid overfertilizing and overwatering. Despite popular belief, short clippings dropped on the lawn after mowing are not the cause of thatch buildup. Clippings are very high in water content and breakdown rapidly when returned to lawns after mowing, assuming lawns are mowed on a regular basis (not removing more than one-third of the leaf blade). That excerpt mentions frequent mowing and not removing more than one-third of the grass blade. While this may sound like more work, a study has shown that although the lawn is mowed more often in proper grasscycling, overall time spent is actually decreased, due to no hassling with bagging. Grass clippings contain valuable nutrients that can return 25% of your lawn's fertilizer needs. It is the most efficient way to recycle yard waste; it saves time, money, and improves your lawn all at the same time! A win-win situation any way you look at it.

Yard Care
Severe weather can do a lot of damage to your lawn and garden. But there are a few steps to protect your property and a few steps to protect your property and a few fix ups you can do after the storm. Here's what the experts say... Small trees can be especially vulnerable. You'll need to stake them securely on three sides with a flexible material. Make sure you use one that won't rub the bark off the tree. Pantyhose work great. You can still mow damp grass. Just place the blade at the highest cutting level possible. If it's grass planting season, wait at least a week to ten days before planting seed, to avoid it being washed away. Before a storm, bring in potted herbs and potted plants. Even larger plants need to be brought inside to avoid flooding.

Forestry Division
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How can I get a tree planted in front of my house? Answer: The Forestry Division plants trees in the “tree lawn,” the city right-of-way typically found between the curb and sidewalk. These trees are planted at no cost to the adjoining property owners. Requests for street trees are taken from January 1 to June 1 each year and are planted from November to April. The tree lawn must be at least 36 inches wide for a tree to be planted. Residents can call the Citizens Service Bureau at 622-4800 to request a tree. For more information, go to: Street Tree Information 2. Can I pick the type of tree I would like? Answer: You can tell us your favorite species and we will send an urban forester to your property to see if it will thrive in that location. Every effort is made to accommodate your request but the final decision is made by the urban forester based on the best tree for the location. A list of trees with detailed growth descriptions is on our web site: Street Tree Information 3. Who owns and maintains the tree?
