    "Proper" Tree Care?
Proper tree care is a mystery to some. Plant a tree and nature will take care of the rest, right? That may be true in some rural forests, but in your yard and in your community, trees need a special kind of care. Trees need to be protected from...people! Trees in our neighborhood contribute to the quality of our lives, and make our communities more livable. Urban trees clean our air, cool and shade our homes, and increase the value and attractiveness of our community. If your trees had the opportunity, would they move to your neighbor's yard? If so, here are some tips you need to know about how to make your own yard safe for trees. Learning about proper tree care can prevent you from becoming your tree's worst enemy.

    Selection and Care
To some, Christmas just isn't Christmas without a real Christmas tree. The following are a few hints to help you select that perfect tree whether you purchase it from a neighborhood lot or a Christmas tree farm.
    • Decide on where you will place the tree. Will it be seen from all sides or will some of it be up against a wall? Be sure to choose a spot away from heat sources, such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators and air ducts. Place the tree clear of doors. Measure the height and width of the space you have available in the room where the tree will be placed. There is nothing worse than bringing a tree indoors only to find it's too tall. Take a tape measure with you to measure your chosen tree and bring a cord to tie your tree to the car. Remember that trees sold on retail lots in urban areas may have come from out of state and may have been exposed to drying winds in transit. They may have been cut weeks earlier.Buy trees early before the best trees have been sold and where trees are shaded.Ask the retailer whether his trees are delivered once at the beginning of the season or are they delivered at different times during the selling season.

    • Tree and shrub clippings only. NO VINES. Clippings which include vines will not be picked up. Trees and bushes with roots cannot go through the chipper machine. Roots must be cut off and processed through other composting programs. No FIREWOOD, lumber, boards, wire or other debris. Clippings should not be piled near parked cars, as they may scratch the cars. Clippings deemed too close to parked cars will not be picked up. The machine will accept branches with a maximum diameter of 8". The longer the trimmings are the easier it is for the City crews to remove them, therefore there is no maximum length. However trimmings should be at least 4' in length. The amount of clippings which will be picked up will be limited to one truck load per day per residence. Citizens with excessive amounts of clippings should make other arrangements.

    Reduce Your Yard Trimmings
Click here for a printer friendly page. Before we reuse and recycle our yard trimmings, much can be done to reduce the generation of these materials in the first place. Fortunately, the landscaping techniques that reduce the amount of yard trimmings produced, also reduce the amount of water consumed.
    Limit Lawn Size
Lawns are thirsty, time consuming, and generate a considerable amount of clippings. Plant a lawn only where it will be used for play or entertaining.
In the front yard, consider replacing the unused lawn with a creative arrangement of shrubs, trees, ground covers and hardscapes (patios, walkways, mulched planting beds, etc.).
    Irrigate Efficiently
Over-watering promotes rapid growth, generating more yard clippings. Over-watering is also a common cause of lawn and plant disease. Use water-efficient irrigation equipment, such as drip and low output sprinkler heads, and water each plant according to its specific needs.

    http://www.vteco.com/contntpg/lawnyard.html
Maintaining a healthy lawn and garden not only makes a home more attractive, it also has environmental benefits. Flower and vegetable gardens can be homegrown and pesticide-free sources of food and inspiration. Healthy lawns, coupled with trees and shrubs, can help prevent soil erosion. The care and attention you give to proper gardening, landscaping, and yard care can pay dividends to both your health and the environment. Consider these one dozen ways you can care for your lawn and garden:
  • Use organic gardening techniques, such as netting or companion planting to keep insects from plants, pull weeds instead of using herbicides, and cover your garden with plastic in the fall to prevent weed germination. Many commercial pesticides and herbicides are poisons that may cause serious damage to your skin, eyes, nervous and respiratory systems, and internal organs. Applied around the home, many pesticides and herbicides build up in plants and soil and in the organisms that eat those plants. As they work their way up the food chain, they may become more concentrated. If you feel you must use chemical pesticides, be sure you know the identity of the pest you want to control, purchase the right product, and carefully follow label directions.
