Will time-travel be possible through worm holes in space? Professor Paul Davies has just written a book on ‘How to Build a Time Machine’, so Robyn Williams took a train ride with the author to find out just what confronts science when it comes to time travel. It turned out that by just riding a train they were already moving forward in time by nano seconds. The real challenge is how to go back in time, and to do that you need a black hole. But don’t despair, because as Davies explains – theoretically it’s all possible. (full transcript...) Reporter: Robyn Williams

Prof Paul Davies : Well a train was actually Einstein’s original idea for a time machine. When he published his theory of relativity in 1905 that was the pinnacle of technology.

TIME-TRAVELLING A Talk given to the girls of St Felix School at Southwold in Suffolk on 7 March 2001
What were you doing at this time yesterday? And a week ago? And on this day a year ago? Difficult to remember? Today I am going to take you back in time not a day, or a week, or a year, not even 1,000 years, but some 1,400 years. Imagine: at that time Southwold was a tiny fishing hamlet, Ipswich, the oldest English settlement, was only a small village, and London had a population of perhaps three thousand. This was a wild area, criss-crossed by tracks, sparsely populated, with much marsh and woodland. People lived in thatched huts, often near rivers, which they used for transport. There were no stone or brick buildings, apart from a few Roman ruins. Not far from here, at Rendlesham near Woodbridge, was the chief place of all East Anglia, the palace of the King. It was today what we would call a barn. Nearby, at Sutton Hoo, kings were buried in their longships, their bodies buried together with slaves, living sacrifices. Then mounds were raised over them, almost like pyramids. At that time England was divided into Seven Kingdoms. There were often civil wars between them. There were no police. Might was Right. There were no schools, no hospitals, no books, no reading and writing, because there was no alphabet as we know it. There were no shops for food and clothes, you had to eat what you could grow and dress in wool. Often there were famines because people ran out of food. It was a dark and cold age with little comfort.

Travelling Through Time Home Articles FAQs Xref ... Date and Time Published on: Saturday 23rd August 1997 By: Martin Webb
    Introduction
This article will describe how to display and manipulate the current time, show the difference between two dates, show a countdown to and from a specific time and date, and how to trigger an event after a delay.
    Displaying the Date and Time
Within JavaScript there isn't a spearate Time object. However, the Date object provides methods for accessing the date and time. The Date object has the following methods: eval, getDate, getDay, getHours, getMinutes, getMonth, getSeconds getTime, getTimezoneOffset, getYear, parse, setDate, setHours, setMinutes, setMonth, setSeconds, setTime, toGMTString, toLocaleString, toString, UTC, valueOf. JavaScript stores the date as the number of milliseconds since January 1, 1970 00:00:00. To create a date object we can use four different methods:

    • - this creates a new date object based on the date and time the date object was intialised, i.e. Now. For example produces:
    • var dateObject2 = new Date(year, month, day);

Travelling back to the beginning of time on a 696 processor supercomputer
Rome 26 Apr 00 An international team of cosmologists has released the first detailed images of the universe in its infancy. The images reveal the structure that existed in the universe when it was a tiny fraction of its current age and 1,000 times smaller and hotter than it is today. In Europe, the University of Rome La Sapienza is involved in the project called BOOMERANG. For the calculations, NERSC's 696-node Cray T3E supercomputer was used. Total computing time was less than three weeks on this machine. Detailed analysis of the images is already shedding light on some of cosmology's outstanding mysteries the nature of the matter and energy that dominate intergalactic space and whether space is "curved" or "flat." The project, dubbed BOOMERANG (Balloon Observations of Millimetric Extragalactic Radiation and Geophysics), obtained the images using an extremely sensitive telescope suspended from a balloon that circumnavigated the Antarctic in late 1998. The balloon carried the telescope at an altitude of almost 37 kilometers (120,000 feet) for 10-1/2 days. The results were published in the April 27 issue of Nature Today, the universe is filled with galaxies and clusters of galaxies. But 12-15 billion years ago, following the Big Bang, the universe was very smooth, incredibly hot and dense. The intense heat that filled the embryonic universe is still detectable today as a faint glow of microwave radiation that is visible in all directions. This radiation is known as the cosmic microwave background (CMB).

    Time Travel
The original series of Star Trek must have been awesome to the sixties generation. It was exciting for the seventies, my own, generation. By the eighties and nineties special effects had come on in leaps and bounds and the demand was for more intrinsic stories, including a few trips back to 20th century Earth.
But, is time travel possible and what would happen if we could go back? If you believe in time travel into the future you are definitely living in cloud cuckoo land. If you believe in time travel into the past perhaps you are just in cuckoo land.
Various wild theories have been proposed for time travel. None tested yet! If you follow Einsteinian methods then faster than light travel (FLT) is impossible. Yet scientists have theorised, and I believed detected, of particles that do travel FLT. So eventually some bright spark will invent a time machine and take the inevitable plunge into the past and I dare say oblivion.
Our intrepid scientist fully conversed with all the dos and don'ts of time travel, and not meeting yourself save a big matter explosion in the fabric of time, arrives back at the day he was born. To simplify matters, as these things always get complicated, our scientist is travelling along time-line A.
That is to say he was born, grew up, went to college, invented time travel and went back to the day he was born. If at the moment he arrived at his birth he decided to return to the time he left, nothing would have changed, because that is his time-line. It is the only one he can ever know. Time-line A.

MORE PHOTOS It seems odd that in one of the world's newest countries I was deliberately going back in time, but Dubrovnik is one of those magical places that puts you under its spell instantly.
Croatians are extremely proud of this historical city, which is a strange mix of the past and the present. Even though it looks like a medieval town, its inhabitants stroll around confidently in the latest fashions. As I came across from Italy on the ferry, the styles and attitudes seemed exactly the same.
There are actually two Dubrovniks, one which looks like a typical Mediterranean coastal town, and the other being the beautiful walled historical city, which, seen from above, looks like a hexagon-shaped jigsaw piece. I was completely taken aback by the sheer beauty of the old town as I had arrived along the main road with no idea what to expect. Suddenly I was faced with the imposing Pile Gate, and what looks like a long stone drawbridge. Once within those city walls, there's so much to see it's difficult to know where to explore first. My eyes took in every detail of the medieval and Renaissance buildings. Wherever I went I always seemed to end up in the wide cobbled main street known as the Placa. And with no cars or motorbikes allowed in the old town, it's easy to imagine yourself back in the 17th century, when locals milled around the main concourse going about their daily business.

What do we mean by time travel?
Technically we're all travelling in time just by existing. But we can't seem to control our motion through time in the same way we can control our motion through space. What most people usually mean by time travel is the ability to drive around in time they same way they'd drive around in a city. Let's look at a spacetime diagram that shows a few examples of different ways observers or objects can travel in time and space.
It's important to remember that any single point on this diagram represents an event - both a moment in time and a location in space . The origin of the axes in the figure represents the place X=0 at the time T=0 . This is what we mean by a spacetime event.
The figure to the left is a spacetime diagram showing spacetime paths of various observers moving in 1+1 dimensional spacetime. Paths A B C and D represent the normal kind of time travel that we find in our world. Path E shows an example of a kind of time travel that is not allowed in Special Relativity.
    The allowed time travellers
The light blue spacetime path A represents a flash of light from a laser coming from off of the diagram. The flash of light travels into the future to the spacetime event

Year 5 Time Travelling at Southwell Minster
As part of their R.E. work on pilgrimage, Mr. Caldwell's class went Time Travelling to Southwell Minister. The morning began with a huge assembly for all the children from different schools which were visiting that day. All together there were about 300 children there. After singing together, everyone went into their groups with a pilgrim guide for the rest of the day. We had two groups and our pilgrim guide took us around a series of activities for our groups. These included things like visiting the Lady Chapel, trying on clothes that pilgrims would have worn in the Middle Ages, making Jerusalem Crosses, looking at the Minster windows and statues and the activities that go on in the church. At the end of the day we had another short service before travelling back to school on the bus.
