Transportation is the most frequently encountered limiting factor in military logistics (the science of planning and executing the movement and support of forces). It provides the bridge over which the nation's resources reach our combat troops and is the key to victory which requires that "we get there first with the most." For almost 150 years, in each war from the American Revolution to World War II, The U.S. Army recognized the importance of transportation during war by forming a temporary management organization that was disbanded in peacetime. In 1950, the Transportation Corps that served so effectively during WWII was made a permanent branch of the U.S. Army. Since then, the Corps has exceeded the considerable accomplishments of its predecessors, teaming closely with civilian industry and transportation elements of the other services, in peace and war. Americans are concerned that our nation maintains a capability for defense and to project military power elsewhere when vital to the interests of the United States. Many American citizens join organizations which support actions to keep our transportation capabilities strong.

In rural areas and in the thousands of towns and cities across the nation it provides personal transportation for many purposes, carrying more persons daily than all other public modes of transportation put together. The building and evolution of this industry provides a fascinating story of invention and entrepreneurism, for it evolved from individual effort of thousands of people risking their time and capital in the hope of creating a profitable business. Surprisingly, until now there was no national showplace for this industry to show and tell its story. Giving a Future to Alaska's Past Since 1967 The Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry Alaska's history has often followed the path dictated by two opposing forces - the desire to exploit the natural resources, and the need for the technology and transportation to reach, process, and remove the products. At each step, Alaska's development has been limited by the available technology and transportation of the day. The Alaska of today was formed in a series of booms and busts. A new resource was found, the technology to exploit it became available, and the resource was exhausted. Gold and other resource exploration resulted in the development and use of railroads, roads, river steamboats, and (later) aircraft to serve the transportation needs. As the inevitable bust followed the boom, the technology of the day was left behind on the tundra and in the forests to rust and rot because it was too expensive and too impractical to remove. MATI was established to give a home to the transportation and industrial remnants and to tell the stories of the people and the machines that opened Alaska to exploration and growth.
