The discussion of any type of equipment or transportation using human muscles, usually leg muscles with cranks and chains. This includes generators, mills, drills, presses, boats, planes, and land vehicles. If a human muscle powers it, it's on topic. - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hpwd
Pedal Power: Spinning for the Future at CCAT
By Ben Erickson Pedal power energy has been in use since the nineteenth century. Pedal power uses the most powerful muscles in the body: the quads, hamstrings, and calves. When pedaling in a circular motion at sixty to eighty revolutions per minute, with the use of toe clips, almost every muscle in the human legs can be used to make energy. Ninety-five percent of the exertion put into pedal power is converted into energy. The average rider at a continuous road speed of twelve miles per hour can produce a quarter horsepower, or enough energy to light two, one hundred-watt light bulbs (Wilson 1977). The average, fit, adult rider can produce only 75 watts or 1/10hp when
cycling at a continuous 12mph.

There are two ways to search the records.
  • Search: type any word into this field, including name if you are searching for author.
  • Browse: select the indexed terms to search the preassigned keyword field. To obtain the most relevant results, it is suggested that you first Browse the Library using the list of general subject terms included in the pull down menu. Those terms are only searched in the subject heading field. If you find that the results from the Browse are too limited you can Search the Library. A Search in the Library finds your term(s) in the Title, Abstract, Keyword, Subject and Author fields and is likely to provide more documents but their content may not be as relevant to your topic. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), the National Highway System Designation Act of 1995 (NHS), and the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) authorized 44 "high-priority corridors." The first 23 were designated by ISTEA, the next 12 by NHS, 18 by TEA-21, and one by the Fiscal Year 2002 Transportation Appropriations Bill. These corridors were deemed by this legislation to be of national importance. In some cases, this meant the corridors were deserving of federal funding. Of the 29 corridors, only five are written into the legislation as potential new Interstate highways:

From Feet to Teleports: Transportation Patterns in Virginia
traffic in Northern Virginia From an 1888 report: Public and private investment in transportation shapes the patterns of economic growth in Virginia. It's worked that way since from colonial days to the present, but after the American Revolution it is even more obvious that public investments have shaped private profits. Modern decisions on where to locate and how to finance the Coalfields Expressway, Interstate 73, a new bridge over the Potomac River, high-speed rail lines, and a new airport for Hampton Roads/Richmond have historical precedents. Think there's competition between advocates of mass transit and highway constuction today? Ya shoulda seen the nasty debates between canal and railroad advocates in the 1830's. Think the Western Transportation Corridor is the most egregious example of a "developer's road" being constructed for the benefit of a few at the expense of the many? Think the competition between Virginia ports and Baltimore over Federal funding of dredging channels and improving the harbors is unusual? The debates today are genteel and logical, when compared to the extraordinary state commitment to building a canal along the James River or the financial sabotage - and then physical destruction - of the railroad connecting Hampton Roads with the Roanoke River. As the old saying goes, "the more things change, the more they remain the same." The ethics and financial interests of individuals did help shape our transportation network; the personalities of leaders such as Joseph Carrington Cabell and Colis P. Huntington are key parts of the story. More fundamentally, however, there are sectional rivalries shaped by physical geography that would have emerged, no matter what sort of people settled in Virginia and no matter what sort of leaders they had chosen...
