http://www.hagerstownmd.org/html/downtown_revitalization.html
The City of Hagerstown has adopted as its marketing slogan: Hagerstown, A Great Place to Live, Work and Visit. In an effort to achieve this goal, Hagerstown's Comprehensive Plan and Downtown Master Plan recommend many strategies to help foster revitalization of the Downtown. These strategies can be grouped under the following five policy statements:
  • Improve the environment of the Downtown.
Provide services for residents, businesses, visitors, and shoppers.
Create magnets to attract residents, businesses, visitors and shoppers.
Schedule special events to attract residents, businesses, visitors and shoppers.
Market the features which make the Downtown unique.
  • The following outlines the activities which have been implemented and which are in the planning stages under the above categories. Improve the Environment The City and the Chamber of Commerce continue to implement the Downtown Enhancement Plan's (click here for map) infrastructure improvements recommendations: Gateway and pedestrian enhancements Improvement of public parking facilities Redesign of Public Square Designation of an Arts and Entertainment District To enhance the public's perception of safety in the downtown area, the Hagerstown Police Department provides community policing support with bicycle and motor vehicle patrols on a regular basis, as well as beat patrols of the Public Square area on the evenings of cultural events at the Maryland Theatre.

The History of Transportation WDM Until the early nineteenth century, the chief means of transporting people and goods across the west was along natural waterways by canoe, or over land by Red River cart, horseback, pack horse or travois. The railway played a crucial role in opening Western Canada, delivering goods and passengers with ease. Later generations experienced the impact of the automobile and the network of roads carved from the land to accommodate it. The journey follows the daring attempts to master the sky, using aircrafts, which were often little more than canvas and wood held together with prayers and prairie ingenuity. Travel the past with us and see how our forefathers dealt with distance. Hop on board the WDM Shortline narrow gauge railway and tour the track outside the Museum. Steam and rail volunteers operate the train on weekends and holidays May 24th to Labour Day (weather permitting).

Bethany Missouri Bethany was officially incorporated as a city in 1860. The first Mayor of Bethany Missouri was T.H. Templeman. History The settlement of Harrison County began around 1838, although the land was not surveyed and opened for entry until 1842. The county is named after Albert C Harrison who was a Missouri politician during the 19th century. Many of the early pioneers in the county settled along Sugar Creek and in the Bethany area. Three commissioners deliberated for several days to determine a site for the county seat and finally came to the decision to place it in the southern part of the county. The original name for the community was Dallas. In June of 1845, John S. Allen was appointed commissioner to survey the town into lots and offer the same for sale. The plat which was completed on June 27, 1845 consisted of 19 total acres. The name Dallas apparently did not meet with the general approval of the residents of the community and the issue was brought before the county court. It was decided that the court and county officials present would select a new name by ballot. The names of Bethany and Carthage were proposed. The Votes showed a majority favored the name of Bethany and accordingly the name of Bethany was given to the town. It was officially incorporated as a city by an act of the General Assembly on January 6, 1860. The first mayor was T.H. Templeman.

After the class, she worked with Urban League staff to prepare a resume and practice for interviews. A short time later, Sheila had the opportunity to interview with American National University for a receptionist position. The employer was so impressed with Sheila that he hired her as a recruiter with an annual salary of $30,000.

Almira was founded more than a hundred years ago as settlers came to claim the good farmland they had heard about. Charley and Almira Davis were among the first, and his goal was to be a storekeeper, supplying those pioneers with the goods they needed. He established a post office in 1889 and named the town Davisine, but a few years later as the town was being platted, the name was changed to Almira. People came to this area in response to ads by the railroad, encouraging settlers as they told of the fertile land and bountiful water supply. Settlers came by the hundreds, hungry for a chance to actually own their own land and make a better life. The town was established and it began to flourish. There were 17 rural one-room schools and eventually, a high school in town, as well as its own elementary school. As transportation became less of a problem and students no longer had to walk or ride horse back, the schools combined. Finally, in 1940, all the rural schools were consolidated into the district as we now know it. We may have a small school, but that doesn't keep the local kids down. Between 85 to 90 percent of the local students continue their education in one way or another. Athletes compete with the best of them, with one athlete, 1987 AHS graduate Kari McKay, taking part in Olympic Trials in February 2000.
